Advice in handling my prospects
It's the dilemma not a lot of GMs want to encounter: Hot upcoming prospects that don't have a place on the ML roster.
It's 2032 in my game. I'm the Minnesota Twins. After Mauer retired, I had a hot shot catching prospect (Sergio Marte) that was two years away when Mauer left so I patched worked the catcher spot. Marte comes in and has been a potential Hall of Famer. I off-loaded some of my bigger names via trade a few seasons ago and ended up with another hot-shot catching prospect (can you ever have enough?!). But now, Marte is STILL dominate (hits around .310/30/110) and is still solid behind the plate at 33 years old and is showing zero signs up aging. The rookie, Goretti is destroying AAA hitting .300 with 19 HR in the past year and 1/4 and is hitting .325 with 4 HRs so far this year (mid-May) with unreal defense behind the plate. Goretti is 24 years old so his MLB time needs to start soon but alas, I have no spot for him to be an everyday player. I don't want to send him up to be Marte's back-up every 6th game. My DH is starting to fade a bit. Do I off-load him and put Goretti as DH? Do I put Marte at DH? Both are rocks behind the plate, though. Do I trade Goretti and hope to land a younger catching prospect that will be ready when Marte is ready to go to DH or retire? I can't trade Marte due to his popularity, team friendly contract, and his overall play. Do I let Goretti stay in the minors another year and see what happens as far as a spot opening in my lineup? Such a pickle! Last edited by DC4MVP; 05-31-2013 at 12:42 PM. |

Help handling my prospects
I'd say put Marte at DH and see how the rookie does behind the plate. If he translate his AAA number to the show, then I'll look to trade your current DH.
Or Maybe just bring the rookie up during september call ups, play him at catcher then make a decision during the offseason. |

After a slow start, my DH has been named AL Player of the Week for the past two weeks and is smoking the ball.
The rookie is going to have to wait I guess unless I can off-load the DH while he's hot and get a decent bounty. I could NOT imagine doing this is real life lol Last edited by DC4MVP; 05-31-2013 at 01:23 PM. |

I would try to teach your younger catcher a new position or two while he's languishing on the farm. Surely you have some holes elsewhere? The sooner you make Goretti more versatile, the sooner you can bring him up and get him at least 4/5 starts p/w.
You, as you noted, could also just 'sell high' on the DH. |

I sold high on the DH. Was able to get a younger prospect version of himself who is a top-50 prospect and $5,000,000 cash and get rid of his $13,000,000 contract . Inserted Marte at DH and the rookie at catcher.
Risky move beings my team is 33-16 and the top team in the majors. 16 days into Goretti's rookie season, he's hitting .429/4/10 and has been good behind the plate. Not bad... |
