2011 NBA Playoffs
Every team has played at least one game now. Some surprise upsets, like Memphis over San Antonio and New Orleans winning over LA. New York and Boston had a good game yesterday and OKC and Denver played a very entertaining game. I cannot wait for them to continue that series.
Anyone else watching? |

I've been watching, I wanted to pick Memphis to win the series, but couldn't with Rudy Gay hurt. Collison's injury last night was horrible luck for the Pacers, I'm hoping they push the Bulls a bit.

No reason to watch. It is going to be Boston and LA again. That is what the NBA wants.

I didn't know why they wanted it last year either. But you can watch the games without any allegiance and see which teams get the calls every game. When Paul Peirce does his little fake and someone jumps straight up and he jumps into them and they are called for a foul you can just sit back and know everything is going to go Boston's way.
When Kobe Bryant pisses an moans up and down the court and nothing is done, but the Thunder get called for T for questioning a single call, you just know it is going to go LA's way.

NBA is the league with the least parity of all the sports. The reason is the refs have all the control. The stars get all the calls. The big cities get all the stars. The big cities get the most fans watching. So you can see why the NBA has had 1 unique champion in the last 11 years and only 8 different champs in the last 31 years.

Been a devout Laker fan since '85. I'll watch the Lakers as much as this busy time of year allows.
Will agree the NBA lacks the parity most of the other sports have, but it always has been that way going back to the 50-60's Celtics dynasty. The NBA officiated is indeed often inconsistent and not impartial, but it's not the reason for the lack of parity. |

Of course a Laker fan wouldn't think so.
![]() I have seen Kobe Bryant chase a ref up and down the court complaining about a call. Nothing is done. Then I have seen another player in the same game throw his hand up in frustration and get a T called on him. Sometimes at the most crucial time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4rAT3roUSk Here is the biggest star getting a call: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36nT2...eature=related

Jax, please don't ruin the thread with your tin foil hat conspiracy theories. In your schizoid rantings you did not mention that one of the teams that have won consistently over the last several years have been the San Antonio Spurs. They are a small market team with a boring style of play (up until this season)
Why the NBA would want them to win makes no sense. Los Angeles has won not because of the referees but because they have one of the 10 great players of all time and during their early runs had one of the 10 greatest big men of all time. Then they went out and replaced him with another fantastic big man in Gasol and Odom and Bynum also add a lot of size. The supporting cast is fantastic. I don't see the Lakers and Celtic meeting again in the finals. Age is catching up to the Celtics and the Lakers are starting to show cracks. I like the Heat and Bulls in the Eastern finals and that is a toss up on who wins. Out west it is a little more difficult. If the Spurs and Lakers do the unthinkable and lose in the first round then it is going to be the wild west. I really do think the Thunder could win if that happens. Feel free to stay and actually talk basketball. But if you are just going to stick and spout off Glen Beck style then please see yourself out of this thread. |

You asked if anybody was watching and I am clearly stating why after so many years of basketball being my favorite sport I am not watching.
It is the same teams over and over. The same bad calls for the same players over and over. It might not be a conspiracy, but there is certainly a bias. Teams like Boston and LA automatically get an extra man out there every year. SA had to be 120% better than the Lakers to move past them. It wasn't ok for them to just be better.

How is the 7th largest city in USA a small market?
I do agree with Jax overall, stars run this league as do the refs. Last nights Bulls game they try to foul Loul Deng late in the 4th QTR. The guy practically raped Deng and they didnt call the foul til almost a full 3 secs came off the clock. Its nice to now the NBA wants Da Bulls to advance but that was way to obvious. I dont trust NBA refs when more then 1 have been accused of shaving calls, betting on games, etc. as far as it goes seeing Boston vs LA again yeah because they r still the best 2 teams. Bulls, Heat, Spurs, Thunder havent proven anything yet. Mavs are known to choke. Orlando is struggling vs Atlanta and cant get past the top 3 east seeds. Stars dont get calls against them its been that way atleast since MJ. Its just 1 of those things while watching u just have to ignore and move on from. |

The second round would be best-of-5 in a 2-2-1 format with the semi-finals and final both best-of-7 in a 2-3-2 format, so that no one could complain about traveling regardless of the matchups. Taking those conditions into account the top twelve teams and first round matchups would be: 1 Chicago 62-20 2 San Antonio 61-21 3 Miami 58-24 4 Los Angeles 57-25 --- 5 Dallas 57-25 6 Boston 56-26 7 Oklahoma City 55-27 8 Orlando 52-30 9 Denver 50-32 10 Portland 48-34 11 New Orleans 46-36 12 Memphis 46-36 1st round 5 Dallas v 12 Memphis 6 Boston v 11 New Orleans 7 Oklahoma City v 10 Portland 8 Orlando v 9 Denver Potential 2nd round matchups 1 Chicago v 8 Orlando 2 San Antonio v 7 Oklahoma City 3 Miami v 6 Boston 4 Los Angeles v 5 Dallas It might be more cutthroat, but it would also be more exciting, and give more meaning to the regular season. You also wouldn't have teams that are 8 games below .500 in the playoffs. It's ridiculous that - even though it won't happen - the Pacers actually have a chance to win the NBA championship. |

You'd never EVER see a best of 3 in pro sports.
Best of 3 woud mean home, away, home which would be costly and tiring for those LA/NO series. |

The way it is now it's possible to play 28 games during the playoffs. Under my system that number is reduced to 22. |

I'd say a better idea would be to get rid of the bye and knock off a round. 8 teams overall best of 7 throughout. |

By the time the NBA playoffs are over, baseball teams will have played 40% of their schedule. The NBA playoffs are way to frikkin' long.
