2019 Northern League Championship Series Recap

vs

New York Heroes (90-72) vs Indianapolis Engines (94-68)

Game One

Willie Mays strikes first, blasting a two-run homer off John Lackey in the first to put the Indianapolis crowd into a frenzy early. But the Heroes tie it in the third on a Sam Wise RBI double and a subsequent Terry Kennedy RBI single to knot it up in the third. Even, Lackey buckled down, allowing nothing the rest of the way and buying time until Wise hit an RBI single in the 8th off unlikely Indianapolis ace Lary Sorensen. Despite a throwing error of his own doing, New York closer Tom Niedenfeur closed it out in the 9th to put the Heroes on top in the series. New York 3, Indianapolis 2 (New York leads series 1-0)

John Lackey overcame a 2-run Willie Mays homer to throw 8 strong for the win.

Game Two

Making his first postseason appearance his the New Orleans Knights' run of four championships in six years ended in 2015, Dontrelle Willis allows 4 runs, 3 earned, over 8 solid innings. But Pud Galvin's strong season continues with a complete game. He wasn't great, mind you, allowing 4 runs on 11 hits. But Hans Lobert's 2 RBI, including a 9th inning walkoff off Tom Niedenfeur to end it, made it good enough and evened the series for Indianapolis. Indianapolis 5, New York 4 (series tied 1-1)

Hans Lobert's walkoff single evened the series.

Game Three

A 1-1 pitchers duel was broken up by a 4-run 7th for Indianapolis, the big blow being Ken McMullen's 2-run shot off Johnny Antonelli. After going 15-1 in the regular season, Antonelli allowed 1 run on 3 hits through 6 before the wheels fell off. The Engines had their own issues, as Leon Day left in the second when a hamstring popped. But Doc White allowed 1 run over 3 2/3 of relief and Josh Beckett and Mike Morgan stumbled to the finish as Indianapolis held on. Indianapolis 6, New York 4 (Indianapolis leads series 2-1)

Game Four

What was a scoreless game through 7 turned chaotic in New York. Lee Mazzilli got to Heroes starter John Lackey with 2 out in the 8th for a solo shot to break the tie. A wild pitch and a dropped popup - one of five New York errors - by Sam Wise turned a harmless 9th inning into a 2-run inning for the Engines for a 3-0 lead. But Indianapolis stayed too long with No. 4 starter Al Spalding, letting him start the 9th. By the time closer John Hiller was in, a run was in and a Ruppert Jones double made it second and third. A Terry Kennedy groundout made it 3-2 and a Bill Madlock two-out single tied it up to send it to extras.

Larry Doby deflated the New York crowd then with a 2-run bomb in the 10th to put the Engines back up 5-3. Down to their final out and with a man out, the Heroes' Sam Wise made up for his earlier error, hitting a 2-run shot to knot the score again, keeping the game going.

And go on it would...until Pete Rose's RBI single off Mike Morgan with one out in the bottom of the 15th scored Buck Leonard, giving the Heroes an epic win, overcoming five errors, and tying the series once again. New York 6, Indianapolis 5 (15 innings)

Game Five

After using Al Spalding to get Lary Sorensen for Game 5 on full rest, the Engines ended up losing their lead in the series. But it worked out here, as Sorensen allowed 1 run over 7 2/3, backed by homers from Ken McMullen and Harry Stovey as the Engines beat Dontrelle Willis to take the lead in the series. The Heroes kept working deep counts, and Sorensen had to leave after throwing 123 pitches. But Josh Beckett needed 8 pitches to get four outs to close it out, giving Indianapolis the edge as the series returns to Indy. Indianapolis 5, New York 1 (Indianapolis leads series 3-2)

Game Six

Ruppert Jones did what he could for the New York Heroes, slugging homers in the second and ninth innings off Pud Galvin. The only problem was that the homers bookended 7 Indianapolis runs, including a 2-run homer from Stan Musial and a 3-run shot from Les Nunamaker off Johnny Antonelli as the Engines went up 7-1 and held off a late charge from New York to win and head to their first PBL Championship Series. The Heroes have won 7 division titles in 11 years without a championship to show for it. Indianapolis 7, New York 4 (Indianapolis wins series 4-2).

Les Nunamaker slugged a 3-run homer for Indianapolis.

The Heroes just have no luck whatsoever when it comes to the playoffs!

They were admittedly underdogs this time around, but it's still amazing. New Orleans has four titles, Los Angeles has two and could get a third here. But nobody's been to the playoffs more than New York. Their first title will be quite a story...whenever it happens.

Of course, 10 errors in 6 games doesn't help - though they won the 5-error game!

I am another that checked that out every week. Right after breakfast I parked on the couch and read every single players stats on the list. Almost caught up on this diary BTW, great fun!

Thanks, Lee. After changing formats more times than Mike Morgan changed teams, I think I've finally got something I'm very comfortable with, moves quickly and I enjoy writing. That stat list will become part of the monthly recap. Glad so many people feel like I do about it. Just a fun quick thing to look at.

2019 Southern League Championship Series Recap

vs

Alabama Airmen (84-78) vs Los Angeles Idols (106-56)

Game One

It's always fun to think about an underdog, especially one as huge an underdog as the Airmen are in this series, upsetting the apple cart and pulling off the upset. But most of the time, that's not reality. At least for Game One, reality won. When Ray Knight doubled as the second batter of the game and scored after an error by Idols third baseman Dave Brain - in for the injured Roy Sievers - the Airmen looked at the scoreboard and saw a quick lead to start the series. When they looked at the board at the game's end, it read 16-1 in favor of Los Angeles. Four runs in the first, four in the second, six in the third and they were off to the races. Ralph Kiner hit two homers and drove in 7 runs. Dan Brouthers homered, had three hits, scored three runs and drove in 5. Ty Cobb had four hits and scored three runs. Quite simply, this was a massacre, and the Airmen will have to find resolve to not be blown out of the series after only one game. Los Angeles 16, Alabama 1 (Los Angeles leads series 1-0)

Game Two

Pounded in Game One and facing a pitcher who was 3-0, 1.96 last postseason, the mission was daunting for Alabama. But Mike Tiernan homered off Chacon in the first and Jeff Francis matched Shawn Chacon pitch for pitch to a 1-1 tie through 7. Sherm Lollar's 8th inning RBI double off Donnie Moore put Alabama up 2-1. But Oscar Charleston led off the bottom of the 8th with a double and would score on Gus Bell's single to knot the game at 2. Give major credit to Alabama, though, as UL Washington singled, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Ray Knight's SAC Fly for the lead - and eventual winning, run as the Airmen tied the series. Alabama 3, Los Angeles 2 (Series tied 1-1)

Game Three

Alabama made the debatable choice to bring ace Mike Scott back on two days rest after he was knocked out in the second inning of Game One. He fared better this time, and led 4-3 going into the sixth. But a bases clearing double from Lou Whitaker blew that out of the water, three unearned runs coming after Buddy Kerr booted what should have been an inning-ending grounder. That turned into Scott's exit, Joe Corbett's entrance, and a five-run inning for the Idols who never looked back and took the series lead once again. Los Angeles 8, Alabama 5 (Los Angeles leads series 2-1)

Game Four

There were lots of chances during the season where the Alabama Airmen could have broken. Everyone expected them to be caught by the St. Louis Tides, or even the Orlando Orcas late. But they never snapped despite bending, their resolve holding tough. So when they fell down 4-0 after 5 in Game Four with Los Angeles ace Bob Ojeda on the mound, the Airmen weren't about to quit. Harry Davis hit a solo shot in the 6th, and Jim Bottomley smacked a pinch-hit two-run single in the 7th to bring them within 1. A Ray Knight SAC Fly then brought home Bottomley to tie it and get the Alabama crowd believing. And so they did...until the top of the 9th, when Jim Beattie walked in a run to make it 5-4 and Jerry Turner hit a bases-loaded triple to bust it open to the eventual final, 8-4. Los Angeles 8, Alabama 4 (Los Angeles leads series 3-1).

Game Five

Up 3-1 in the series, Los Angeles went with No.4 starter Mike Witt to try and get the top of the rotation back on full rest. They could've have expected Witt to allow 2 runs over 9 innings in the potential clincher. Potential, of course, was the operative word. For Alabama's Eddie Plank would allow 2 runs over 9 as well, sending it to extras. Plank threw blanks in the 10th. Witt did not, as a pinch-hit single from U.L. Washington scored Buddy Kerr, who led off with a double, for the walkoff win in the bottom of the 10th, a thrilling win in what potentially was the last game in Alabama for 2019. Alabama 3, Los Angeles 2 (10 innings) (Los Angeles leads series 3-2)

Eddie Plank held the Southern League's best offense to 3 hits over 10 innings to keep the Airmen alive.

Game Six

Two games and two bad losses for Alabama ace Mike Scott. He got another chance here, and was greeted by Oscar Charleston in the first with a homer to put the Idols up 1-0. That was all Scott would allow over 8 2/3 of stellar work as the Airmen pitchers seemed to be settling in against the Idols' big bats. Shawn Chacon was his usual great postseason self, though. But in the sixth, Alabama found a chink in the armor, as Jim Bottomley smacked a solo shot to tie the game. By the time 9 innings were done, Scott and Chacon were done, the game was tied and it was up to the bullpens. Ed Summers held Alabama scoreless in the 10th. Luis DeLeon, near perfect since coming over from Orlando in the deadline deal for George Brett, couldn't do the same, surrendering an RBI single to Charleston that scored Lou Whitaker and sent Los Angeles to its third PBL Championship Series in four years. Alabama can take heart, though, giving a great fight as major underdogs and giving them something to build on...their first postseason berth. Los Angeles 2, Alabama 1 (10 innings) (Los Angeles wins series 4-2)

Oscar Charleston drove in both runs to send the Idols back to the PBL Championship Series.

Pretty good effort by the Airmen to almost take the Idols to a Game 7.

Absolutely. Considering they were without their real ace, Dan Haren - though the Idols are without postseason giant Mark Prior (11-1 in his postseason career) - the Airmen put up a great effort. Will be interesting to see if they jump into free agency this season, a must I think if they plan on repeating. St. Louis is strong and Orlando will improve very quickly, I think.

Great job on PBLCS recaps. They look great.

I was rooting for the Airmen, they have nothing to hang their heads about though, they played a great series and the Idols are beasts.

Thanks. Really enjoying doing the writeups this way.

As for Alabama, they were just overmatched. The Idols became the PBL's first 1000-run team (1,029), blowing past the prior mark of 971 set by the 2010 New Orleans Knights and matched by the 2013 Memphis Strummers (of which Oscar Charleston was also a part).

2019 PBL Championship Series Preview

vs

Indianapolis Engines (94-68)
vs Los Angeles Idols (106-56)

Whoever said pitching wins never met these two teams. The Indianapolis Engines set an absurd scoring pace early on, scoring more than 7 runs a game in their first month. The Los Angeles Idols ended up doing even better over the course of the season, scoring 1,029 runs to shatter the previous record by 58, becoming the first team in PBL history to top 1,000.

The Engines have activated Mike Boddicker (7-2, 4.62) for the series. It's a dangerous move, given that he's been out with shoulder problems since early June. But to stall the Idols' vaunted offense, it's all hands on deck.

The Idols have activated Luke Easter (.283-13-63), out since Sept. 8 with a fractured foot. Postseason legend Mark Prior, however, is out, as is third baseman Roy Sievers, who was a huge cog in this offensive machine during the regular season.

Both were tested in the League Championship series, but both survived. Now they're here, so let's get to it...

Season Series: Indianapolis won 2 of 3

2019 PBL Championship Series Review

vs

Indianapolis Engines (94-68)
vs Los Angeles Idols (106-56)

Game One

It only figures with these two teams that when their aces take the mound a slugfest breaks out. The Engines put up a 2-spot in the first on an Alan Trammell RBI double and a Les Nunamaker SAC Fly. But the Idols answer in the bottom half when Ralph Kiner - who drove in 7 runs in Game One of the SLCS - blasted a 3-run shot for Los Angeles. The Idols added another in the third for a 4-2 lead, and when Indianapolis got one back in the top of the 5th on a Willie Mays homer, they answered with 2 more runs of their own in the bottom half. Harry Stovey then homered in the top of the 6th to cut the deficit to 6-4. Donnie Moore relieved Ojeda in the top of 8th. With one out, he walked Miller Huggins before Larry Doby reached on catcher's interference. That set the stage for Hans Lobert's game-tying 2-run double. Doc White relieved Sorensen for a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th, and Moore hurled a scoreless top of the 9th. White needed 2 pitches apiece to retire Oscar Charleston and Dan Brouthers in the bottom of the ninth. But Ralph Kiner crushed the first pitch he saw 427 feet to left for a walkoff homer, his second of the game, to give the Idols the leg up in the series. Los Angeles 7, Indianapolis 6 (Los Angeles leads series 1-0)

Ralph Kiner again dominated a Game One, with 2 homers including a walkoff

Game Two

When the Idols answered Les Nunamaker's solo shot in the second inning with four runs in the bottom half it was a response. When the Idols then added 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth, it was a statement: You can't keep up. Dan Brouthers and Luke Easter each drove in five runs and every Los Angeles starter scored at least once as the Idols cruised to a 15-7 victory and the Engines found themselves desperate for three games at home they hope can turn this series around. Los Angeles 15, Indianapolis 7 (Los Angeles leads series 2-0)

Game Three

A Larry Doby homer in the first inning and RBI singles from Doby and Trammell in the second gave the Engines an early lead for the third straight game. But Shawn Chacon settled in and allowed 1 hit the rest of the way until he left in the 8th, by which time the Idols had chipped away against Pud Galvin take the lead with a game-tying 8th inning homer by Yogi Berra. Brian Fuentes and Jonathan Papelbon got the final 5 outs for Los Angeles as the Idols went up 3-0 and the Engines found themselves searching for answers. Los Angeles 4, Indianapolis 3 (Los Angeles leads series 3-0)

Game Four

On three days rest, the Engines call on Lary Sorensen to try and keep them alive, while the Idols send Mike Witt - on the heels of a great performance in the SLCS - to close it out, or at least buy time for the top 3 to get back on full rest. Witt battles, but Sorensen is on his game, allowing 2 runs over 7 2/3 while getting homers from Stan Musial, Alan Trammell and Willie Mays as the Engines live to fight another day. Indianapolis 6, Los Angeles 2 (Los Angeles leads series 3-1)

Alan Trammell hit a 2-run homer in the 8th. Willie Mays followed with a solo shot.

Game Five

Managerial decisions take on added impact in the postseason. And, while Whitey Herzog pushed all the right buttons with Indianapolis this season, he'll face questions about this one. After Leon Day matched Bob Ojeda pitch-for-pitch - each allowing two runs while pitching into the 8th - the managers turned it over to the bullpen. The Idols turned it to Brian Fuentes, while Herzog turned to Mike Boddicker, who was making his first appearance since going down with a shoulder injury June 15. Fuentes finished the 8th and threw a scoreless 9th and 10th. Boddicker was equally impressive, throwing 2 1/3 innings of no-hit ball. But Herzog tried to push Boddicker for another inning of work, only to have it blow up in his face when Boddicker allowed three hits, the last of which was a 2-run single to Hank Thompson, as the Idols went up 4-2. John Hiller finished for the Engines, but the damage had been done. Los Angeles manager Frank Selee threatened to make the same mistake with Fuentes, though. Les Nunamaker doubled and Charlie Maxwell singled him home to make it 4-3. But that was it for Fuentes, who gave way to Jonathan Papelbon, who froze Stan Musial and sawed off Kent Hrbek for a weak liner back to the mound to end the game and the series, giving the Idols their third title in four years. Los Angeles 4, Indianapolis 3 (11 innings) (Los Angeles wins series 4-1)

No surprise I guess...the Idols are REALLY good. That lineup is pretty incredible.

Nice recap.

Their offense is so strong that so long as they have at least mid-level pitching (they ranked 4th in the Southern League) they are going to be very hard to beat. Consider that Indianapolis had baseball's #2 offense with 883 runs. The Idols topped that by 140 runs...almost a run a game! And that was with Ty Cobb missing almost two months.

They, not surprisingly, have the highest payroll at $74.6 million (New Orleans is second at $61.4 million). But they've spent it well.

up to 9 votes on the Award polls...I always aim for 10. I don't vote, so I'll let the computer be #10 so we can get them awarded and move on with the offseason. A pretty exciting draft crop coming in.

The Charlotte Cougars are on the clock.

Good man! Awards announced tomorrow and then it's on to the draft (which may be a day or two as I adjust defensive ratings for this fun draft class).
