Anyone Else Just Sim the Games?

My favorite part of games like this is the management of the team - off-season stuff, trades, line-up setting, etc. I very, very rarely will actually manage a game.

1. I'm wondering if anyone else does this.
2. Any tips for an OOTP newcomer? Any settings I should pay particular attention to? Any things that you handle yourself that someone else might delegate to the AI?

I'm the same way. I want to blast through the games themselves as quickly as possible and focus on player/team development. I spend most of my time tracking my prospects in the minors. I adjust the minor league rosters and use the 'play position' check marks to ensure the top prospects get in the lineup and play the position I want. I think this is key. I do all the moving up and moving down (and cutting) myself.

I've never thought playing the games out adds to my immersion factor as so many will attest to. In fact, playing the games out seems cheating to me because I can do things the AI teams cannot/will not. I want to be hamstrung with the same managerial mistakes that plague the AI teams.

As to general game settings, they have always looked the same to me for both ways of playing the game. I've never seen a suggestion that would be only for simming and not for playing out games, for example. The GM part of the game is exactly the same for all kinds of players.

That's how I play. I'll play the games out if I make the World Series (hasn't happened yet), but my opinion is I'm the GM, and I don't have any business meddling w/ the managing of the games. That's why I hire a manger.

I sit at the 7-day roster screen and line them up, clicking through w/ the Finish Today button. I look at each box score and make adjustments for who is playing well/poorly (OK, I know that's manager's job, but still) and keep at it. Player development and league developments are really what's fascinating to me, not day-to-day simulations of the games themselves.

Back in previous versions of OOTP I would handle absolutely everything. I'd be the GM and Manager for whatever team I was controlling. However, in more recent versions, this has become too easy for me. So now I simply handle the GM duties and look for a good manager to handle everything else. I'll still set pitching rotations and lineups as well as some player strategies, but I generally let the manager handle everything else. I give up a little bit of control over the situation, but it seems more realistic to me and is much more difficult.

They are located on the individual player strategy pages. It allows you to force the AI to play a player at a certain position regardless of where the AI thinks the player should play.

I think he means the force start position setting from the players profile.. action, set game strategy, force start/use at position setting. There you can force the AI to start a player at a specific position.

I sim most of my games, only playing out certain games, like when a rookie/traded player makes his first start, games against an opponent in a tight race, playoff/world series games, etc..

I have played this game since OOTP 7 but have never managed a full game. I tried once but didn't like it. I quess I am more of the GM type.

If I am playing as a GM only, then I sim every game. If I am managing, then I never sim them.

I'll play out maybe 5 games a season, otherwise I sim them.

I set the pitching rotation and roles, make the lineups and depth charts, then let the managers and coaches do the rest.

when i play any historical league i tend to sim games unless the team i am managing (SOX) is in the playoffs.

With my EBL league i pretty much am doing the same thing.

ABF league i play ST, about the 1st 25 games then all of sept plus playoffs.

I play out my team's Opening Day game each year (can't resist- it's special), then sim the rest of the season. If my team makes it into the playoffs, I play out all of those games...

I play one pitch mode and only look after substitutions for my own team during a game, everything else is controlled by the AI so my team doesn't have an advantage.

Takes about 10-15 minutes per game.

A lot more fun this way since you get to know and bond with your players.

That's exactly how I play. I play out all the games but I only handle substitutions and let the AI do the rest. I have to admit that after winning my division 10 straight years, I'm looking for a way to make the game a little more of a challenge.

I set lineups for every game. if I have a favorite SP, I'll play out all his games. If not, I sim the first 5 innings and see what the score is. If it's close, I'll take over. if not, I'll continue to sim thru the 7th. You have to have the warmup rule off to do this or you could be screwed when you take back over.

Since both types of players are answering...

I play out every inning of every game (except for ST), and between the league I had in OOTP8 and the one in 11, I've played 40 years of baseball. One pitch mode, very fast speed, with the minimum text, and I play a game in less than 5 minutes. I timed it once and played one in 3:30 some seconds IIRC., but that one was really just clicking without reading anything.

I've played a whole month in a sitting before. Several times.

That's why I LOVE this game. I can play out ALL of my games, and yet still move at a brisk pace in the history of the league.

Awesome game, wish I would've found OOTP before I did now.

I sim 100%. playing games out is way to boring for me. I try with each new version but only last into the 2nd inning.

Like I said, I play one pitch mode and only do substitutions. The fun in watching the games is the anticipation of each play and how your players will performed. I actually feel the rush/stress of making a come back, holding the lead, dealing with an injury, which reliever to bring in next, do I use a pinch hitter/runner? and the ultimate walk off home run. All that kind of stuff that you don't experience when simming the entire games in fast mode.
