BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1886 New Season Starts on Wrong Foot The Chicago White Stockings look at a new year as they have everyother, hoping that they have the resolve and skill to win another championship. Time however has taken its toll on this particular team and many are predicting that the Chicago outfit may have its most down season in 10 years and that the side just doenst have what it takes to win anymore.
Compounding these dire predictions comes news that star second baseman Fred Dunlap will miss the entire 1886 season. Dunlap while playing in a preseason game tore his shoulder muscle while reaching for a ball and falling on his side. Dunlap is one of the leaders of this team and his leadership and influence on the team will be sorely missed. Now Frank Fennely will have a chance this season to play everyday and make the most of talent that most scouts feel he has, in three seasons however with 466 atbats the 26 year old is only batting a paltry .230. DunLap will miss entire seasonAge is also a concern for the team that is depending on such players as Cap Anson, George Derby, and Candy Cummings, all over the age of 30. Cummings was brought back for his leadership and the team also traded for reliever Fred Goldsmith from Cleveland. Chicago also offered a contract to 36 year old outfielder Count Gedney. The power rankings this season show that many believe Chicago will have a long hard season:
As can be seen the Whites rivals from Chicago, the White Sox are expected to be among the strongest teams this coming season. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- George Wright Retires George WrightFew in the league will be particularly sad to see that George Wright has decided to end his playing days at the age of 39. Wright played for six diffrent teams in his long career but was never really accepted or liked by fans and players due to his hot temper and outlandish style. Wright did have a world of talent however and no season was better then the one he had in 1875 when he won the MVP award and the triple crown while playing for the Philadelphia A's. Wright drove in 446 runs in his career and was a .289 career hitter. He also won two championships, one with the A's and the other with the Orioles. Larry Corcoran moving the Field Leaving the MoundAnother story making big news going into the new season is that of Larry Corcoran. The former star pithcher who dominated for the Reds has decided to leave the mound and continue his career as an outfielder. Corcoran has had arm trouble in the past year and at the fresh age of 26, wants to stay in the game. The right hander will continue his career in Pittsburgh and his very small frame, 5'2, will make him an interesting target at the plate. Corcoran is the alltime league leader in strike outs with 1462 and won 29 games in 1882 with the Reds, 135 for his career. Larkin and Mitchell Can Play No More Two players this offseason had their careers cut short due to major injury. Bobby Mitchell of Cincinnati who earned 123 wins in his career will not throw another pitch. Mitchell at the age of 30 tried to come back from a serious arm injury but just couldnt do it and has decided to go into business. Mitchell was a good personality for the Reds and will be missed. In Pittsburgh the services of Henry Larkin will be lost as the 26 year old retired from the game of baseball. Larkin who played in 157 games for the Alleghenys the past two seasons tore his labrum and will not be able to grip a bat or continue to play. Larkin was a career .247 hitter and patrolled a good left field. Other significant injuries included Philadelphia's Tom Healy who will miss the season with a major shouder tear. And a huge loss in Boston as ace pitcher Bob Barr will miss the season with chronic elbow tendinitis, the right hander just cant pitch without acute pain. Barr is among the best pitchers in the game and wonn the 1883 pitcher of the year award. |

BASEBALL WEEKLY April 1886 Injuries Mount For Chicago In what has to be considered their worst run of bad luck since they were formed 16 years ago, the Chicago White Stockings opened the new season in the most difficult way losing a number of key players for the entire year. Ruptured index fingerSoon after the season ending injury of second baseman Fred Dunlap before the season even began, the injuries kept rolling in. After his opening start of the season starter George Derby was lost when he ruptured a tendon in the index finger of his throwing hand. Derby who has been a mainstay in the Chicago rotation for close to 10 years, Derby will likely miss up to 3 months. Next in line was Billy Sunday who tore a his labrum in his right shoulder sidelining him for the remainder of the season. Sunday was the everyday left fielder and batted .276 last season. Sunday is also one of the fastest baserunners in the league and will be missed. Count Gerdney and Jim Mctammany will look to fill this void. Along with these two key injuries Stump Wiedman continues to have a problem staying on the mound. The starter agai went down with a strained tricept muscle and isnt due back until late May or June. Joe Borden also missed some time out of the bullpen with a sore shoulder. In the meantime the Whites had to do something to try and fill the void in the pitching core, and they called upon veteran Cy Bentley, who was waiting for a call as a free agent. Legendary Cy Bentley has joined ChicagoGood old Cy was one of the most dominant pitcher in the history of the game, havng won 311 games in his career, only behind Al Spalding. Bentley has also won the outstanding pitcher of the year award an incredible 7 times and had a storied career in Boston. Bentley did well in his initial 2 starts for the team this month, and can still pitch with guile and purpose at the age of 36. Cap Anson is off to the worst start of his career which isnt helping matters. Anson who is a lifetime .320 hitter is only batting .193 on the young season and many worry if he has lost some speed on his swing. To his defense Anson has started slow before and turned it around everytime. The team is 9-13 and only still 4.5 games back. They do play with heart and fight for their wins, a recent loss to their old teamate Al Spalding of Brooklyn earlier this month, was of interest to many. Cap Anson has also gone on record before this season that he expects his players to avoid alcohol on game days and concentrate fully on the game at hand, some rumblings of this being an unpopular move have circulated. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1886 Wiedman Out For Season ![]() Everyone knew there was a problem for some time now but most in the Chicago camp were just hoping that it wasnt so. But an injury, and a serious one at that, to starter Stump Wiedman and his arm should come to no suprise to no one. The 25 year old right hander who has won 89 games in his career finally could pitch no more and suffered a torn elbow ligament in his throwing arm. The injury is of course very damaging and Wirdman will be out for close to a full calander year; some are even questioning if the young man will pitch again, or have the velocity he once had back; doctors remain cautiously optimistic. "Right now you just feel bad for the kid" said Ned Williamson who has played with Wiedman all of his career and is a close friend, "he feels like he has let the team down but he has not, its just one of those things, one of those bad breaks." The more immediate impact is that the team is now permanatly down another arm. Cy Bentley has impressed everyone and proven that he still can win at his age as he reaches now for over 320 career wins. Bentley in the rotation now full time has gone 6-4 with a 1.73 ERA in 11 starts, where is the rust?? With all the holes the team has kept it together and remains three games over .500 and still all to play for after a 17-11 month. King Kelly is carrying the team bats very well having driven in 36 runs so far, while Cap Anson is starting to come around a bit bringing his average up to .244 having batted .286 in May.

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1886 Gritty Whites Wont Quit Dirty uniforms and close ball games are the attributes that define the 1886 Chicago White Stockings. It seems that every obstacle and disadvantage has come their way this season but they havent given in an inch and continue to push for another pennant. "Sometimes when things are darkest you step up more as a team then you ever thought possible" said manager Pop Anson, "no matter what happens we still believe we will be there in the end." Chicago had a 12-11 month and are still relying on the arms of Cy Bentley and Steve Toole, neither of which thought they would be in this position. The team remains deadlast in league ERA and pitching but has counteracted this fact by leading the league in avgerage and runs. The team ERA is at 2.46 and the offensive average is at .265. Pete Hotaling leads the team with a .318 batting clip. Many questions remain to why the team is so injury prone. The latest and maybe most costly victim was first baseman Otto Schomberg who went down with a torn groin muscle (ouch!) while rounding the bases. Schomberg of course will be lost for the season and takes away maybe the biggest bat in the lineup next to King Kelly. This is the 6th Chicago player that has lost much time to injury and four of them wont see action until next year. Fingers are being pointed at the team trainer Gabe Carpenter that he isnt taking proper preparation and precaution to his players. Others are blaming Cap Anson and his overly aggressive playing style. Otto SchombergRegardless the team is still very much alive in the race and a number of unexpected stars are bringing wins and drama to the west side of Chicago. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1886 Amatuer Draft Results The results from the June Amatuer Draft held in Chicago: 1. Gus Weyhing SP - Lousville Colonels The hometown kid grew up 2 miles from the ballpark and is sure to be afan favorite. He has all the tools to try and help this franchise finally turn things around since they made the move to the working city. 2. John Schaffer SP - Philadelphia Quakers Anothe local kid Schaffer is said to be a natural leader and had impressive movement on his pitches. Schaffer joins a team and a staff that has underachieved in recent years. 3. Mike Tiernan OF - New York Giants Straight out of New Jersey "silent Mike" goes to the big city and brings a world of speed with him. Tiernan is a five tool player and has all of New York excited about his left handed bat. 4. Bert Cunningham SP - Philadelphia Athletics Maybe a stretch at this pick Cunningham joins a team that wants to win now and may have added pressure to perfrom right away as the A's are in another pennant race. 5. Ed Beatin SP - St. Louis Browns A left handed talent Beatin throwns over 90mph and has a very deceptive move off the mound. A smart kid as well. **The White Stockings chose Ed Herr with the 15th pick in this years draft. The team wanted pitching but with the pool light by the time they picked Herr couldnt be passed on. Herr is a 21 year old short stop from St. Louis with nimble feet and a quick bat. He does not posses much power but should develop well.** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1886 Home Runs Rule Modern Game The 1886 baseball season has changed the landscape of things across the leagues and parks of all the teams. The biggest diffrence this year is the incredible increase in the home run, and not many people are happy with this development. There have been 580 home runs hit already this season league wide, already 150 more home runs then we saw all of last season. The leader in the long ball is Chief Roseman who became the first man ever to hit 20. Roseman is part of a group of players that are sacraficing a low average to swing for the fences, and some of those very fences are causing a stir in the game. With a number of new ballparks going up this year and last, the configuireations of the parks have varied from city to city. One common trend however is the short fences in left field. Cities like Pittsburgh, Cinicnnati, Brooklyn, and St. Louis are all bringing the left field wall in much closer then usual allowing players to get the automatic home run much more easier. Some parks have made the home run less then 300 feet down the lines, somthing that many feel is hurting the pureness of the game. 3 home runs in one game!On July 21st of this summer the league saw a first, all beit in an extra innings game. Second baseman Fred Pfeffer of the Cincinnati Reds hit three home runs in one game, somthing fans used to wait weeks for someone to accomplish in the past. Pfeffer has 17 home runs on the season making him second in the league, and his fence in Cincinnati was rumored to be at about 290 feet. In response to all this a commitee is scheduled to meet after the season to discuss this very issue and its fairness to the integrity of the game. many expect new rules to soon be in place with minimum requirements for the ground rules in all profesional ball yards. So many are saying under their breath "enjoy it while it lasts." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Whites Falling Fast The Chicago National League team had a hard month of July going 9-15 and pushed them 11.5 games out of the pennant race. Injuries are continueing to come in an incredible pace as the team lost both their short stops in the month. Fred Fennelly who was having a great season having driven in 58 runs went down with a sore shoulder and will be sidelined for the season. First year rookie Ed Herr then broke his elbow and will be sidelined for 5 ful months. If one can believe it the Whites have 9 players on their disabled list and six of them wont see action until 1887. The team also made a move off the field that moved a well known and liked player. Ned Williamson started his career in Chicago back in 1877 and was frustrating at times becuase of his inconsistency. Still Williamson was part of two championship teams and was a well liked player aroudn the city and the park. The short stop was traded to the New York Giants this month for starting pitcher Tom Lovett. The Whites with all the injuries really had no one to take the mound on a consistent basis and an mmediate arm was needed. Ned for his part steped and fit right in the Giants lineup, including going 5-5 in his first week. Ned WilliamsonThe team released this statement in response to the move: "The entire team wishes Ned the best and we thank him for his immense contribution to the team and his overall standing as a gentlemen to all" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1886 Americans Surge; Grays and Browns in A Fight The longest season in baseball history is drawing to a close as September begins. Once again two very diffrent stories have emerged in the pennant races, one team blows away it competition and two others head to the stretch without a single game to separate them. The Boston Americans finally raced out of the shadows of their more traditional counterparts in the city. The Americans have all of New England delighted as they won 51 of 63 games in the second half of the season to easily win their first pennant. The Cleveland Blues never knew what hit them as the Americans just refused to lose and made the margin as large as ten games before clinching things out. The Americans were especially impressive on the road with a 48-13 record, the best such mark we have seen from any baseball club. Twenty three year old short stop Geramny Smith led the charge with 90 RBI and an imrpressive .323 average. As has always been the custom, in the National League things couldnt be tighter. All season long the Browns and Greys have been flirting with the division lead and little have changed with five game remaining. The Grays of course are the defending world champions and are more of a veteran team that is a diffrent team at home (39-21) then they are on the road (31-30). The Browns have 5 pennants in their history but havent won in 5 years. Fans wondered about their fate after they traded Dave Orr out of town for power man Fred Pfeffer. Pfeffer was injured with a bad ankle sprain and will likely not be back this season, but the team has still hung in the race. Alot of close game wins have been the key for the Browns, they are 22-13 in one run games for the season. So each team has 5 games left and are tied in the standings. Both teams will finish off the year at home with the Browns hosting Boston and the rays welcoming Chicago. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- White Stockings Suffer Worst Month Injuries finally took their toll and a lack of depth could be contained no longer as the Chicago White Stockings suffered a 6-20 month and dropped to last place in the division. With a makeshift infield the Whites just didnt have the defense to get through. Players playing out of position and 9 position players on the disabled list couldnt be overcome. On some games early in the month the Whites were worried they would be forced to forfeit matches because they had a lack of players. Chicago lost 13 games in a row, their longest losing streak in history. A proud franchise looked its meekest as even the most basic of plays was often difficult. The team did win 3 of four to close the month as George Derby came back off the disabled list. Despite everything, Chicago once again find themselves helping to determine the pennant winners. Chicago travles to Brooklyn to close the season with the Grays who are tied in first place with St. Louis. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1886 Brooklyn Win Pennant as Records Fall The Brooklyn Grays played great baseball down the stretch and swept the Chicago White stockings to edge the St. Louis Browns for the National League pennant by a single game. The Browns lost their last game of the season 13-7 to the Boston Beaneaters and opened the door for the Grays as both teams were tied going into the final Sunday of the season. Brooklyn in front of a capacity crowd at Washinton Park beat the Whites 12-8 as Chicago again gave things away with a 12 error performance. "Our experiance as a team really paid off," said Brooklyn veteran Mike Dorgan, "we are proud champions and had no intention of not winning it all again" Mike DorganThe Grays will now face the Boston Americans who ended the season with a 13 game winning a streak and a runaway win in the American division. Oddly enough in the World Series past the overwhelming favories have not done as well as can be exected. So Brooklyn could very well be very competitive for the title. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Records Fall in Game Changing Season The 1886 season was the longest in league history and as expected a number of records were set in the process. Even with the longer season however some of these records were quite incredible in their own right. The most significant records were:
Denny Lyons of the Philadelphia Quakers set a rescord in runs and steals. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY October 1886 BROOKLYN REPEATS AS CHAMPIONS The Brooklyn Grays won their second consecutive championship and their third of their history as they culmulated an impressive and long season with an upset victory against the Boston Americans.
The Americans came into the series have won over 90 games and riding high on a 13 game winning streak. But in a series both teams start from scratch and the experiance of the Grays was simply much more evident although all the games were close and low scoring. The National League as a whole now has won the last 5 World Series matchups against the Amercian Association, something that has many wondering if the two leagues are indeed heading in two diffrent directions. Brooklyn took the series 4 games to 1 and celebrated like little kids as many of the teams veterans realize that this may have very well been their last time for glory. The likes of Ezra Sutton and Al Spalding left Chicago and came to Brooklyn to show that their careers were still strong enough for anyteam. Ace pitcher Tim Keefe, although only 30 years old, has started over 300 games but is the heart and soul of this city and this team. "We all win together" said Keefe upon the clincher in Brooklyn, "the people in the stores, the kids in the schools, and everyone on this train, we all win togehter and that is why this is so special." No talks about next year yet as no team has won it three years in a row, but a recap of the series shows that the Americans put up a good fight, but just faltered at the crucial points of the games: Game 1
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Lady Baldwin In one of the most stirring and impressive post season pitching performances Tim Keefe threw a one hit shutout in front of the Boston faithful to beat the Americans by a single run. The only run of the game came on a fielders choice in the 7th as Keefe built on his legend and struck out 11 men on exactly 100 pitches. Game 2
WP: Bob Black LP: Tommy Bond The Americans tie the series with a strong perforamance from Bob Black. Black fanned 11 batters and threw as fast as we have seen in the effort. The delight of the Boston crowd couldnt be contained as a Bill Phillips hit drove in two runs in the 6th and proved the diffrence as Boston tied the series. Game 3
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Lady Baldwin A repeat of game one as Tim Keefe looked almost as strong in his home park. Keefe this time struck out an amazing 14 men, a new World Series record, to out match Lady Baldwin again who has had terrible luck. Three key errors by the Americans was the diffrence as Ezra Sutton had two RBI in the win. Game 4
WP: Tommy Bond LP: Bob Black The backbreaker of this series as the Grays win it in extras and the Americans avoid tying the series. In an epic battle Tommy Bond and Bob Black match eachother pitch for pitch and headed into the eleventh without a single run allowed. Finally with a man on second Ezra Sutton again grounded a single in the whole of left field and Charlie Bastien beat the trwo to the plate that was offline, the Grays now had the commanding edge. Game 5
WP: Tim Keefe LP: John Hamill Tim Keefe wins his third game of the series and wraps it up for the Grays. Keefe again struck out 13 men making it 34 men for the series. A three run 4th inning was more then enough for Keefe as Sutton drove in his fourth run of the series. Pitching on the Brooklyin side was the diffrence in this championship as stars like Dan Brouthers batted only .158 on the series. Tim Keefe the star of the 1886 World Series |

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1887 Chicago Determined to Bounce Back in '87 The Chicago White Stockings must have felt like the new spring and baseball season would never get here. The team which has won the National League pennant 7 times suffered through its worst season and finished 20 games behind first place Brooklyn. Few fans in Chicago care to hear of excuses such as injury or youth, everyone from Madison to Lake Shore Drive expect the Whites to turn things around in 1887. The team was not inactive in the offseason and made front office moves in hopes of producing their old form. The team made a big trade to get a starting pitcher in October parting ways with Fred Goldsmith and Jim McTamany to Detroit for starter Pete Conway. This mobve became more important as Chicago did not renew the contract of starter Stump Wiedman, who has suffered from numerous injuries and was still recovering from shoulder problems as the new season dawned. Thirty eight year old Candy Cummings was also allowed to go, Cummings was traded to New York for 30 year old outfielder Dave Foutz who is a .241 career hitter. The big move however came on the free agent front as the Whites spent the money to bring in a power bat to their lineup. Left fielder George "Dandy" Wood joins Chicago after 11 seasons in the league, six of them in Detroit. Wood got a very large contract rumored to be among the top five in the league and the hope is that the 28 year old Wood can bring much needed pop and suppport to King Kelly and the Chicago offense. Wood is a .270 career hitter and has hit 13 home runs while driving in 328 runs in his career. Wood bats from the left side and will patrol left field while batting in the middle of the order. The full return of Billy Sunday and Fred Dunlap should give the offense the balance it needs. Dandy WoodFinally the team wasted no time this off season in showing team trainer Gabe Carpenter the door. Carpenter was blamed for much of the misery the team suffered on the injury front, he was said to be less then comforting to the players in their rehabilitation and lacked a conditioning program for the team in general. New head trainer Salvador Moya takes the helm and much is expected from the Texas native. The team needs to be healthy to compete.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Scouting Report Top Players of 1887 Scouts across the nation compiled a report of the top players in the game of baseball going into the new year, the top five hitters and batter were as follows: Top batters: Dan Brouthers
Top pitchers George Geggus

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1887 Dandy Leads Resurgent Whites ![]() It seemed as if the start of this new season would never come for the Chicago White Stockings as they looked to rebound from what can be considered their worst season in team history. The team came out and played the way their tradition calls them by opening the season with a 13-8 record only two games behind the leading Reds. George Dandy Wood had alot to say about the good Chicago start and surpassed all of the big expectations that followed him going into the year. From the very first game Wood came out on fire and helped Chicago score more runs then they have in anyother game in their history. Wood went 4-5 and drove in 5 runs as the Whites beat the Philadelphia Quakers 27-5 on opening day. Dandy didnt stop there however, the newly popular outfielder led the league in batting at .426 and leads the league in RBI with 26. Wood ran away with the batter of the month award in April and shows no signs of slowing down. King KellyThe team did suffer an injury concern when big bat King Kelly went down with a strained oblique and will likely be out until late May. With the loss of Kelly the team recieved a boost from their veteran Cap Anson who had a rare good start to the season. Anson started the year batting .345 and leads the league with 22 runs scored. Overall the bats are cooking even without King as the Whites lead the league in batting at .281. George Derby and Fred Dunlap have also made strong returns to form. Dunlap is batting .335 and looks to be as nimble as ever as second base. On the mound Derby has the unique leadership quality back on the mound, Derby ,likes what he sees from this season's team. "Its a diffrent team from last season," says George, "we have a belief again and it shows." With the season just started, the long summer of last season has already been forgotten. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1887 Reds and Whites Two teams have dominated things for the first two months of the baseball season as the resurgance of the Chicago White Stockings has been matched only by the resolve of the Cincinnati spirit. As the month of June came up both teams were tied atop the National league with identical 32-16 records, both teams a full seven games ahead of the rest of the pack. The two time defending champion Brooklyn Grays have some work to do to get back into the race as it seems as if the Reds and the Whites have it out for eachother this year and will be fighting down the stretch in yet another epic National League pennant race. Dave OrrThe Reds are of course led by Dave Orr who has established himself as one of the most prolific hitters in the game. Orr came to the Reds midway through last season and hasnt stopped hitting, as of this printing he was batting .393 and showed no signs of slowing down. On the mound is none other then Ed Dugan who is 13-3 and has struck out 89 men. Dugan is still 22 years old but has a way of making sure his side wins when he takes the mound. For Chicago their offense is just off the charts. They broke their record for runs in a game this month by scoring 28 in a win, they had set the record earlier on opening day. Otto Schomberg earned player of the month honors as he turned his slow start around by batting .347 in May. Chicago is far and away the best hitting team in both leagues leading in runs, hits, stolen bases, slugging percentage, and average. The teams will face off another 12 times this season before all is said and done, for Chicago it jusr feels good to be back in a pennant race. "Close and competitive, just the way we like it" said Fred Dunlap the second base man who is batting .305.

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1887 Welcome Young Billy Hamilton ![]() An offense that is ranked first in most all offensive catagories except for home runs nary needs much help. In the June amatuer draft however the Chicago White Stockings by many accounts got fortunate with the 4th pick of the draft as they chose youn New Jersey outfielder Billy Hamilton. Hamilton is considered the best hitting prospect to come out of the league in the past five years as the 21 year old has played very well in local New York amatuaer leagues. As most teams continue to stock up on pitching in these drafts Hamilton fell to Chicago, who wasted no time making him one of their own. Hamilton bats from the left side and upon signing joined the Chicago starting lineup and with all the support looked like he had been there for years. Billy had 12 hits in his first 28 atbats and already drove in nine runs. Hamilton is a quiet kid but scouts are already raving and the city has embraced the young man, somthing that is all the more easy to do with the Whites again playing at the top of their game and in first place. Chicago went 16-7 for the month and once again out did their run total in a single game by beating the lowly Pittsburgh Alleghenys 29-0 on June the 7th. The team as a whole is batting .305 and is playing in front of a fullhouse where ever they play. George Dandy Wood already has 81 RBI this season and is well on his way at topping the season record of 109 held by Dave Orr. "Their offense is like trying to stop a locomotive" said the Boston manager this month. In a headscratcher of a trade however Chicago bought the rights to a former player. The Only Nolan is back in Chicago and many wonder why the Whites keep taking a chance on this man who has bounced all around the league. Many feel like Chicago management have never recovered from their 1877 World Series loss where Nolan was brilliant, and feel that they are due some of that magic. Also Nolan and King Kelly have been long time friends for years. Chicago gave up young short stop prospect Ed Herr in the deal. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1887 Derby Lost For Season; Whites Remain Positive ![]() The storylines continue to grow for the first place Chicago White Stockings as they head into the final stage of the season still with the best record in the game. Chicago went 18-8 in the month of July and continue to set a record pace in runs with 765. George Derby was having one of his finest season's in 1887 but will be out of action for the remainder of the title chase. Derby in fact will have a long road back from a serious injury. Derby tore his labrum and is facing a 10 month recovery plan, at 30 years of age their is still hope for a full recovery. More then anything Derby's leadership ability may be missed the most by the young Chicago staff. "Even though I wont be pitching I still will be close to the guys" said Derby, "I will spend time at the ballpark and will be sharing ideas and advise, these guys can still win without me." To add to some of the drama for the month cpatain/manager and leader Cap Anson went down in pain as well. Anson has been extremely durable in his career having played in over 1200 games, most of all time. Anson did strain a hamstring and missed most of the month, being 35 years of age his iron man days may be over. Anson was having an outstanding season rebounding very well from a poor 1886. Anson is batting .369 and has scored 88 runs. His return will be much needed. Two players who are taking the league by storm are King Kelly and George Wood. Dandy Wood has already broke the single season record in RBI with 106 and still has a ton of games left, no one gets the hits more often with runners on then Wood. Mr. Kelly is truly flirting with the elusive .400 mark, King Kelly is batting exactly .400 for the year. Still he only has 125 atbats so qualifying for the batting title could be a challange. With all the storylines the bottom line is that Chicago looks to be the eventual pennant winners this season with a current 7.5 game lead. "We are right back where we belong" says pitcher Art Hagan.

Hamilton should be a boon to your offense. He's the prototypical leadoff man, who should hit for a very high average while also stealing tons of bases. Great selection!

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1887 The Best In the Business ![]() Players come and go and some are beloved by their fans for their game play and charisma while others are so highly respected by their peers for the expertise of the way they go about their play. On rare occasions however there comes a player that catches the attention of all and is widely considered the best player in the game by everyone because his feats and talent are so obvious. Dan Brouthers of the Brooklyn Grays is exactly that kind of player.
Brouthers has spent all of his ten seasons in the big market of Brooklyn and was a star from the start batting .309 in his rookie season. In 1880 in his third season Brouthers took home his first of four MVP trophies after batting .321. The most memorable year may have been 1882 when again Brouthers won the MVP with a .318 average, 89 runs, and 58 stolen bases. Even more so of course that season Brouthers led his team to their first world championship. All great players need to be winners as well. Brouthers followed things up with another monster season and MVP award in 1883. Big Dan hit .355 and stole 68 bases while setting a record in triples for a season with 24. After missing most of 1884 with an injury Brouthers came back in 1885 and won his fourth MVP award. It is this year however that Brouthers has really outdid himself as he reaches his prime at 29 years of age. Brouthers flirted with the .400 mark all season and came up just short at .396, still however making it the higest average ever in a regulation season. Brouthers is also setting all time records in slugging percentage (.632) and doubles (48), all while driving in 95 runs and scoring another 121. Few players in history have to combination of obvious hitting skill with first class speed. Brouthers who is a native of Michigan has now gained larger then life fame as the game has exploded in popularity nationwide. When asked however about his acomplishments, Brouthers wastes no time with his response: "Its all about winning the championships." Brouthers has won three of them in Brooklyn. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CHICAGO AND BOSTON WIN PENNANTS In a rare season where neither league came down to the wire with a pennant race. The Chicago White Stockings and Boston Americans won their divisions and lead their races almost from wire to wire. Now both teams will display their skills against eachother in the World Series. The Americans are the defending Amercian Association champions and are keen to use their experiance of last season where they lost to Brooklin to take it all this time around. Chicago is looking for their 3rd championship as a franchise and is bringing with them an offense that scored 974 runs. George Wood is the single season record holder with 125 RBI and Otto Scho, burg became the first player in baseball history to score over 100 runs while driving in over 100. The most anticipated part of this series is the ability of star Boston pitcher Bob Black, who is regarded by many as the best in the game, to stop the Chicago offense. Black went 31-10 this season with 419 strike outs. Two big markets are ready to face off as most of the country stalls a little bit to keep their eye on the 18th fall classic. The Amercian Association has lost the last 5 World Series in a row. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
