For those of us who like old-school racing, there is a new book about the 1979 season called "He Crashed Me, So I Crashed Him Back". There is an excerpt in this weeks SI about the fight between Bobby Allison and Cale Yarborough at the 1979 Daytona 500. Good stuff.

Have to say that I am digging the new restrictor plate package they are running at Daytona today. Lots of lead changes and horsepower for passing.

Id have to say the Daytona is always the most disappointed race of the year. ITs always something whether its rain or track problems. The most watched race of the year ends up taking 6 hours. Cant be good athough those who waited saw a great race.

As for the original question. it waned in the 90's with the two folks that I did follow retired (Bill Elliott and Richard Petty), and what I felt was the sterilization of the sport.

Unfortunately, Atlanta's quite likely to be a clone of them as well.

I realize this is an old post, but I still follow NASCAR. I think I follow it more now. I grew up watching Bill Elliott, so I try to catch the races he is in, even if he does ride around in the back.
I think the racing this year has largely been better than the few years past. |
