Comparing OOTP8 to OOTPX

Hi, everyone. Since OOTP8 was released for free, I've been playing around with it, and generally having a blast. However, I was wondering if one particular issue I've been having with OOTP8 has been fixed/addressed in OOTPX:

As far as I understand it (and please correct me if I'm wrong), you can play OOTP8 either in Commissioner mode, when you can take over any team but are not bound by some of the league rules (i.e. payroll budget, players unable to refuse minor league assignments, etc.), or you can play in GM/manager mode, where you are bound by the rules but are subject to being fired. The way I would like to play is in Commissioner mode (so I can continue to expand/contract my fictional league, etc.) but still be bound by all of the league rules if I also GM a particular team. Is this possible in OOTPX?

Also, is the full PDF manual for OOTPX available somewhere? I'd love to be able to download it so I can get a general sense of where it differs from OOTP8.

Thanks.

I play 2007 (aka 8) as both a Commish and GM, you just turn on the Commish option when you want to expand the league.

You can always download the version X demo from http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/joomla/downloads-ootp/demo-download-ootp.html
and see for yourself how it varies from 8.

What were playing before you picked up the free v8, Johnny? A previous version of the game or another game altogether?

Incidentally, in OOTP X you can also play with a "cannot be fired" option. For those who are faint of heart.

I use it because I know that one year of not making the playoffs can always lead to a firing

Managing a team in commissioner mode doesn't exclude you from league rules, it just gives you a way to use the editor to cheat/work around the rules.

Fixed that for you.

What is funny is that OOTP 8 and OOTP X aren't all that different in terms of layout and functions. But there are a lot of little things in OOTP X that make it a lot more enjoyable to play than OOTP 8. It just feels like a more effective version of the game, with lots of little things that make the game a lot more solid. Such additions as the minor league DL are small in stature but just make the game far more enjoyable. And the wholesale changes, like the pitching system, ball flight mechanics, and better play creation models, just make the game immensely more fun.

Add to the fact on my computer 10 runs roughly somewhere between a "habillion" and a "million kajillion" times faster, or so it seems. Not sure if those are actually numbers...

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! And I quite agree with Malleus Dei - the ability to not be fired in OOTPX is key to my enjoyment of the game, and probably reason enough to buy OOTPX instead of playing the free version of OOTP8.

I do have another question, comparing the two. I've noticed when simming a fictional league in OOTP8 with historical stats totals, PCMs, etc., that HR totals in the 20s are below where they should be, and there are no standout HR hitters (i.e. no-one's power is above 10-11, thus no one hits more than ca. 25 HRs a year). I'd like to see a few big HR hitters in this period - not necessarily Ruthian, but capable of 40+ a couple of times. Does the same thing occur in OOTPX? Thanks!
