New Faces Grab AL Gold Gloves

There has been a changing of the guard with the Joy in Mudville American League Gold Glove team.

Eight new members have captured the positional honors including Detroit rookie left fielder Fred Lynn.

Baltimore first baseman Steve Garvey is a first-time recipient, breaking the four-year reign of New York Yankee Pete Ward.

Catcher Bob Boone of the Orioles is the lone repeat winner. Boone now has three Gold Gloves.

Perez, Money Repeat as NL Gold Glove Winner

Cincinnati first baseman Tony Perez and Philadelphia third baseman Don Money won their second consecutive Joy in Mudville National League Gold Gloves.

Perez, a former third baseman, and Money are the lone repeat winners from last season's squad. However, Pittsburgh short stop Fred Patek is also a two-time recipient. Patek last won the award in 1972.

San Francisco's George Foster ended the reign of four-time winner Willie Davis of Los Angeles.

Lynn Becomes Second Straight Tiger to Win AL Rookie Honors

Detroit left fielder Fred Lynn became the second straight Tiger to win the Joy in Mudville American League Rookie of the Year.

Lynn, Detroit's top pick in the 1973 amateur draft, joins teammate Dave Kingman who won last year's award.

Lynn, a former star at the University of Southern California, won the batting title with a .336 average. He also hit 25 home runs and drove in 108. Lynn led the AL with 41 doubles.

Milwaukee catcher Gary Carter finished second in the balloting. California Angel pitcher Doug Bird was third.

Thornton Named NL Rookie of the Year

Pittsburgh Pirate first baseman Andre Thornton won the Joy in Mudville National League Rookie of the Year.

Thornton, the Pirates' first-round pick in the 1972 draft, hit .285 with 28 home runs. The 25-year-old drove home 105 runs and scored 103 times.

Thornton provided Pittsburgh with the right-handed bat it had been seeking and was an instrumental key to the Pirates winning the NL East crown.

Brewer Lauded with NL Comeback Accolades

Los Angeles pitcher Jim Brewer has been named the Joy in Mudville National League Comeback Player of the Year.

Brewer saved a franchise-record 39 games for the Dodgers. In addition, the left-hander posted a 6-3 record with a 0.83 ERA. Brewer allowed just six earned runs in 65 innings of work.

Brewer was 6-4 with a 2.92 ERA in 1973. He saved only eight games that season.

Kaat Honored as AL Comeback Award Recipient

Minnesota pitcher Jim Kaat has been honored as the Joy in Mudville American League Comeback Player of the Year.

Kaat helped lead the Twins to their first AL West title. The left-hander posted a 21-8 record with a 3.35 ERA in 40 starts.

Kaat was 19-23 in 45 starts for Minnesota in 1973.

Seaver Picked Unanimously as AL Cy Young Winner

Baltimore ace Tom Seaver won his second American League Cy Young Award in the past three seasons.

Seaver won a career-high 30 games and posted an incredible 1.92 ERA as the Orioles rolled to their fifth straight playoff berth.

Seaver previously won the honor in 1972; he finished runner-up to teammate Nolan Ryan last year.

This marks the fourth time a Baltimore pitcher has won the AL award.

Ellis Captures Second NL Cy Young Award

Pittsburgh Pirate ace Dock Ellis captured his second National League Cy Young Award in three years.

Ellis, the all-time winningest pitcher in Joy in Mudville League history, was 24-15 with a 3.18 ERA. The right-hander was a key to the Pirates winning their fourth NL East title.

Ellis, who also won the award in 1972, finished second to teammate Bob Moose in last year's voting.

Lynn Becomes First Rookie to Win MVP

Detroit Tiger rookie Fred Lynn completed a remarkable season by winning the American League Most Valuable Player Award.

Lynn adds the trophy to his previous honors as Rookie of the Year, Gold Glove recipient and batting champion.

Lynn hit .336 with 25 home runs and 108 RBIs. The 22-year-old led the AL with 41 doubles and finished third with 201 hits.

Stargell Selected as NL Most Valuable Player for Second Time

Pittsburgh outfielder Willie Stargell won his second National League Most Valuable Player Award.

Stargell, who won the honor after the 1972 season, led the NL in slugging (.548), OPS (.938), extra-base hits (80) and total bases (344).

In addition, the 34-year-old hit .303 with 113 RBIs. Stargell ranked second in home runs with 35 and runs scored with 127.

Pittsburgh has won the NL MVP three straight seasons. Teammate Al Oliver took home the honors last year.

The Pirates won the NL MVP, the Cy Young Award (Dock Ellis) and the Rookie of the Year (Andre Thornton) this season.
