News Story Chuckle

The White Sox win the 1917 World Series 4 games to 2 with a 7-2 win over the Pirates. The news story read:

It was two outs in the last inning of the 1917 World Series.

"When he hit it, I knew that it was my ball," the White Sox fielder said. "But I had to catch it and it seemed like the hardest catch of my life. I said to myself, 'Two Hands, just like your dad taught you.'"

He squeezed the ball like a precious diamond -- and the party began.

Poor, deluded fielder....the final out of game 6 of the World Series was a swinging strikeout.

Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, 5 to 4; I don't believe what I just saw! I don't believe what I just saw!

Good catch.

It will be fixed.

Thanks for posting it.

In the future, it would be better to post things like this in the PBP/News Errors/Typos thread. It could be missed in its own thread.

Very funny.

It's stretching my limits a bit but MAYBE . . . . he was the catcher and the hit he is referrig to was a foul tip. Kinda hard to think about good 'ol Dad in the millisecond between the tip and the catch but I suppose it's possible.

It was a foul tip and they were interviewing the catcher.

Well, then it's good that he figured out so quickly that it was his ball.

I didn't post it over there just yet because I wasn't annoyed by it or anything. Just thought it was funny and thought I'd share. I was planning on posting it there at some point, though.

This makes me very sad because if I saw a news story like this it would immediately destroy my sense of immersion in the game, I'd have exit the game, pull the hard drive from the computer and beat it to death with a sledgehammer.

Didn't I recently beat you by a second with a post in OT? Nice one.

Wink

I thought maybe the catcher had thrown to first on a dropped third strike, but it clearly reads, "When he hit it, I knew…" Possibly one of the Sox fielders was daydreaming about being the hero of the series?

You simply can't believe ANYTHING those old White Sox players said.
