Gave a stern lecture to my team after that last outing. There will be no more "great effort" in a losing cause. Either win or get blown out is my teams motto for the remainder of the season.

Although I did refuse a trade offer that would have made me worse, so I'm not completely tanking it LOL

Interesting that you should that because with the exception of the opening week there wasn't a good effort while losing, and then I finally broke through.

Is this all attributable to the fine New England air?

I must agree with Lee, and I don't believe stats are useless, because if that's the case I wasted a few years of my life working as a researcher and statistician before moving to the newsroom.

We've found our niche, as you and I are tied for the lead in cut stoppages. Would your team like to join mine for a soaking in the briny waters of our Chesapeake Bay, guaranteed to toughen the skin?

Hugh, I think you'll take the lead from me, as I close against St. Louis, Bears and Diggstown, each of whom is low on the cuts stoppages. The sad fact is that they just pound my guys into oblivion before a cut can occur!

With 17 losses by TKO via cuts, I think that the Villebillies should draft Chuck Wepner to anchor their team next season...

Keep your gloves up, and chin down, and there is always a chance for an upset.

I simply love the cut stoppage list, as this is the first time I have looked at standings of any kind in the UTBA with the exception of Jack Delaney, and not found myself at the bottom.

Yeah, good to have found something eh? LOL. The next 3 weeks are all divisional matchups and with a good run a few of the "also-rans" can make a little noise. If nothing else at least play spoiler. If we meet again..you bring the stitches and I'll bring the bandages Peace buddy..good luck with the stretch run.

Had to work the dreaded overtime all night last night and part of the day today. Two drunk women ran over a regulator station in one of the small towns I take care of. Around 1,000 customers were without gas service. Anyway........sorry for the delay in the waivers.

I'm sure everybody assumed the second round of waivers were closed and the third round will close in a couple of hours. Week 8 will begin tonight as soon as I get the top 20 rankings posted.

Second round waiver claims:

Iceteaboxing claims BW (5)Peter Culshaw 0-0-0 (0) *beginning and release BW (4)Pierre Cossemyns 4-10-0 (2) *beginner.

You've got to be tired after all the extra time you put in at work, Scot! Now I am being shamed into working on the latest edition of the Bink Gazette. For some reason, having set all those dubious records, I am having a hard time with it, but it'll be out tomorrow.

I don't think we have any Bink fans out your way that might have caused the accident! Then again, maybe they got lost chasing the Hebron bus!

Perhaps they could also draft Vito Antuofermo to anchor their Middleweights
also, as Ring Magazine once said following the second Hagler fight.

Well at least he didn't start to bleed during the national anthem, but almost.

Vito was one of Vistaman's favorite fighters. Vito's UTBA I history had a lot to do with his not being drafted by anybody.

Bink Gazette - Ugly Week 7

BINK GAZETTE July 11, 2008

The Binks have never been mighty, but oh have they fallen! After being pounded by Brooks Battlers on June 27, they hosted the mighty Hebron Haymakers for a Fourth of July gala event at the Civic Center. The atmosphere was electric, as the Inner Harbor fireworks were going to be going off just blocks away (and simulcast on the big screen inside), and it was hopeful that the Binks would provide some fireworks of their own!

The Binks knew that they faced an uphill battle. With the recently-acquired 10-2 Michael Nunn, the twin terrors at lightweight, Robin Blake and Edwin Valero (both 10-2), and super over-achiever Joe Symonds (10-1-1), the Haymakers truly had some top-notch talent. Making the prospects doubly difficult was the fact that nine Haymakers had advanced to pre-prime, whereas only four Binks had made that leap.

But Amina Sade and her friends were there, firing up the local fans, as well as the contingent of Hebron-ites that had come down along with the team. The crowds’ mouths were agape as Chocky Chockvivat, our fireball flyweight, was felled by a thunderous punch from Symonds and was counted out in the first! Chocky is a spitfire and has never been stopped this early in a bout. This didn’t bode well for the local heroes.

Uptown Jackie Brown fought nicely, and was leading (maybe, as the bout logs have been mysteriously going the way of the Binks) until a lucky punch stopped him in Round 10. After that, things got downright ugly! The Binks ended up matching last week’s beginning, losing the next 6 fights, going 0 for 8 for the second match in a row. In déjà vu all over again, Cocoa Kid ended the pain, albeit only temporarily, stopping Billy Lynch in 6 on cuts.

The Bink fans sat dazed as the first half concluded. The Haymakers had dominated, going 12-4, outpointing the Binks, 40-13. This was as bad as the prior match, when Brooks Battlers were the leaders in wins, 12-4, and in points, 39-11.5! Henry Hank fought a valiant fight against Nunn, but lost on a decision. As in last week, the light heavyweights had a rare double win, Oakland Billy Smith beating Chris Finnegan and Melio Bettina knocking out Chad Dawson in 6. Team captain Hasim “the Rock” Rahman continued his fine performances with a 10th round KO of powerful Ron Lyle. But those 3 wins, out of the last 4 bouts, only enabled the Binks to escape a near whitewash!

The Rock ranted and raved at his teammates on their poor performance, and team mascot Jubilee the Devil Boy bit Chocky in the ankle, hoping to get him going. Would the Binks make the second half respectable, as they did against the Battlers?

Jubilee’s action may have worked, as Chocky came out and opened the second half, fighting a rousing battle with Napa Kiatwanchai, one of the few guys whose name is as tough to spell. Chock was leading until Napa surprised him with an uppercut, and Chocky was counted out in the 10th!

Jackie Brown was stopped in the 10th by Symonds, who has been a monster in this league, but Jackie was right there with him, which is a bit encouraging. Then the bantams through lightweights continued their recent ineptitude, dropping 6 more, so the Binks lost the first 8 in this half as well!

Once again, the Cocoa Kid stemmed the tide, briefly, with a decisive win over Barry Brown, but the Binks again had to wait until their light heavies squared off before notching another win. Bettina bounced Finnegan all over the ring and won a decision, and Oakland Billy got a draw against Chad Dawson, but many (at least his mother) felt he deserved more!

The Rock closed out the night with a savage pummeling of Mike Weaver, but it was way too little, way too late! The Binks got three wins and a draw in the second half, an even worse performance than in the opener, and the fans spent more time watching the fireworks on the big screen.

It even seemed that the fireworks and fights were being choreographed together. “BOOM” went an exploding firework, at the same instant as a shot delivered by a Haymaker against Danny O’Sullivan’s chin! “THUD” and a counting from 1 to 10 came next. Another “BOOM” coincided with a perfect punch that ended Young Corbett II’s night in Round 2. It went on and on all night! The Haymakers were all-too-aptly named! And any fan that couldn’t count up to tem before the match certainly could after, as half the Bink bouts ended up that way, with a Bink being counted out!

The end result was the Binks going 7-24-1, losing on points by the unbelievable margin of 81-23! The “effort” on the part of the Binkies gave the Haymakers, who were just barely leading in their division, a huge lead over Iceteaboxing. The Icetea folks were left lamenting a schedule that didn’t give them an opportunity to fatten up at the expense of the Binks! The Binks set many league records, alas all of them for futility.

In terms of Fighter of the Week honors, that could have gone to Alberto Castro and Jorge Monsalvo of the Haymakers, both of whom notched 1st and 2nd round KOs. But the Bink Fighter of the Week award always goes to a Bink, and this week’s co-winners are the Cocoa Kid, who has become our main stopper with a 10-3-1 record, and the Rock, whose two wins raised his record to 10-4! Melio Bettina continued his resurgence with his KO and win, and is now 8-6, while Oakland Billy has scrapped and is a respectable 7-5-2.

Max Resch (6-8) continues to be a scrapper. He lost to Frank Wissenbach in a close match, then was giving Nunn fits until his fight was stopped in the 8th on cuts. Henry Hank lost two close decisions, and needs a little more punching to complement his durability. Hard Luck Hank’s record of 6-7-1 has to improve.

In terms of the Bum of the Week award, the winners are many, with the featherweight and bantamweights clearly the worst! Danny O’Sullivan was stopped twice in the first round, running his streak of opening round losses to at least 5! Waterford crystal has more durability than his glass jaw! Boots Monroe actually lasted until the 2nd & 4th rounds! The Major Disappointment of the Year is now 2-12, worse than Danny’s 4-9-1. These two more closely resemble the Lee brothers, Ug and Home, with their skills of late.

Not that the feather contingent of Young Corbett II and Jose Badillo are doing much better. They are each now 5-9, which isn’t bad for Jose, since he is low-rated, but Corbett has not lived up anywhere near to his potential. Bummy Davis and Buzzsaw Yamabe saw their losing streaks hit at least 4, though Buzzsaw almost upset Edwin Valero. Billy daniles was stopped twice, but he’s still new and learning, so we’ll wait before judging him.

Mack Lewis, in a post-match interview said “The Haymakers are a fine team, and their owner Chris Conn chose his squad wisely. I hope they make it out of town without any problems, as our fans are in an ugly mood, but shouldn’t take it out on the victors.

“I have to accept full responsibility and, if Mikehoudini so chooses, I’ll step down. Clearly, we need to regroup, as our losses are getting worse and worse, when we started out so competitively. Perhaps some of out boys are being distracted by Amina Sade. We may need to switch to other ring girls or none at all. I do know that curfew will be strictly enforced, and there will be no big July 4 celebration any of our guys will attend.”

With three beatings in a row, each worse than the last, crappy is the only word to describe the Binks. And their performance has now apparently affected that of the Orioles, who have taken a turn for the worse of late. Far and away cemented in the cellar, it remains to be seen if the Binks can salvage some pride as they close out against their division rivals.

They travel to Saint Louis to take on the Sluggers in Week 8. The Sluggers beat them, 16-15-1 and 51.5-48, in Week 2. Michael Dokes matches the Rock with a 10-4 record, and stopped him the first time they met. Light heavy Jimmy Adamick is 12-2, lightweight Art Aragon 9-4-1, though one of his losses came at the hands of Bummy Davis, and bantam Jorge Lujan is 11-3. The Binks need more production everywhere, but particularly from their lighter weight categories, if they are to make the match competitive.

In closing, the Binks appear to be in disarray, and need a decent performance to halt their skid, make that a gallop, down to the cellar dwellers. At least they should get some good steaks on the road trip. The Binks’ season has run the gamut from awesome (a few fights) to awful (the last three matches) and only time will tell if they are to become known as the Mets of the UTBA II.

Bink Fever, catch it! You’ll only wish you died!

The Top 20 rankings have been updated.

At the end of season one only, the top 16 ranked fighters will qualify for the year-end tournament since there is no champion yet.

Week 8 to begin later this afternoon. All matches for the remainder of the season will be divisional matches. Good luck to all the teams that are in the playoff hunt.

Looking ahead to week eight.......... up first:

Hebron Haymakers @ The Nobodies (The Nobodies are the only team this season to defeat the Haymakers back in week 3. Final score of that match, 56.5 - 45.5).

Toronto Tornados @ Iceteaboxing (Toronto is coming off their first win and Iceteaboxing appears to be down a little. Iceteaboxing hammered Toronto back in week three by a score of 69 - 27).

Brooks Battlers @ Oakland Assassins (When these two teams met in week 2, Oakland came out on top 55.5 - 43.5).

Undisputed Champions @ Nebraska Corn Jabbers (U.Champions squeaked by Nebraska on a questionable cut stoppage in week 2 by the final score of 50.5 - 49).
