Slow Play
The game runs fine on my desktop - smooth just like OOTP4. But, on my laptop (where I want to be able to play the majority of the time), it is extremely sluggish. The strange thing is, my laptop is newer and more powerful than my desktop.
Laptop runs XP, 900mhz Athlon, 16mhz video memory, 256k RAM. I downloaded direct x 9.0 (had 8.1) to see if it would make any difference - it did not. I closed extraneous processes and that did not help. I have 15.1 megs free on my hard drive. The game freezes with 3D enabled, and is extremely slow disabled. For example, sim speed on "very fast" is about equivelant to "normal" on my desktop. Games sim slowly - even the pulldown menus take a second or so to "pull down" so I can see the choices. PLEASE HELP! I waited and waited for my tax refund so I could get the new game. I love OOTP, but I'm frustrated. Thank you. |

OK - I have run msconfig and there is absolutely nothing unessential running when I boot up. I defragged my laptop. I have 12 (out of 18) megs free on the hardrive. Oh, I also updated my video driver. As I said above, I have a 900mhz Athlon laptop w/ 256k of ram and 16mhz video memory.
BUT . . . the game is still slow. Doesn't work at all in 3D mode (freezes pretty quickly). With 3D disabled, it works but the pulldown menus sort of float down and the options take a moment to appear (while it is almost instant on my pc). Even playing an exhibition game (where there are no other games simulated, etc.), the pbp on "very fast" is equivalent to "normal" or a little slower on my pc. That's my biggest problem - I play out my games and w/ the slow pbp it's going to be a chore getting through them. I did a little experimenting - if I go to 16bit color (instead of 32), it speeds up slightly. Same is true if I go to 800 resolution, but screen is small and unreadable. It actually sped up when I went to the next higher resolution (from 1024), but the game was too large for the screen. I really love everything I've seen in my experiments and am looking forward to starting a season. Please help! If I can get the pbp to speed up I can live with the slow menus. PS OOTP4 ran fine on the laptop. Thank you. |

Update: The menus are no longer an issue! I found the "disable menu animation" option in the game setup section (love that wood maple skin, too) and that fixed the slowness. Much easier to navigate now.
If I can just speed up the pbp a little. . . |

Have you adjusted the pbp in the "game options" screen?
