Boston Red Sox 2007

(I have never done an OOTP 2007 diary before. Admittedly, I've only ever used Baseball Mogul 2006-2008 for diaries. I hope this is enjoyable and please feel free to comment on my style or ask any questions you want answered.)

It was January 1st, 2007. The Red Sox had made their big moves for the off-season: Daisuke Matsuzaka, J.D. Drew, and Julio Lugo. Many baseball enthusiasts said that Epstein had made the moves he needed to to give the Red Sox the edge over the Yankees. However, many did not think so.

Critics were harsh on Epstein. They believed he overspent, they believe he reached for talent. They hearkened back to blunders like Matt Clement, the Red Sox shortstop position, and several relievers. They repeatedly questioned his General Management abilities, saying he could not handle the pressure.

Eventually, he couldn't.

It was on January 1st, 2007 when Theo Epstein ran off again. This time without the press, without the guerrilla suit, he simply left. The baseball nation was shocked, the fans were not as shocked: they had seen it before. The Red Sox brass had to act quickly, seeing as how the off-season was still taking place. That is where I came in.

I was a member of Epstein's team. I was mostly involved in scouting players coming out of college and into the big leagues. I started in 2002, where I went from college to college and evaluated players. I made a name for myself in 2005 when I tipped the big guys off on Jacoby Ellsbury. Now I was one of the guys behind the desk, making decisions, usually about prospects. Apparently, I was the man for the job.

I am still in shock, but there is no time for being idle in this position. I was now the head of baseball operations of one of the biggest baseball teams in the World. I have every person in the department tossing documents at me, recommending what I do, but it ultimately comes down to me.

First I have to go through the whole roster myself and evaluate. Once I know where we are at as a team, I will know my strategy. Once I know my strategy, then I can start putting my fingerprints on this team.
