Odd that Jack Cust is so uninspiring to most baseball scouts seeing as he was a first round pick in the '97 draft.

He molested AAA pitching last year and was raking even better before being called up.

Cust and his bad defense have reached biblical proportions.

You'd think that a guy who just hits the crap outta the ball basically everywhere would be able to hide in left field like Adam Dunn (not saying he's as good as Dunn, but you get the point).

Its good to see a guy making the most of his chance though.

And Street's on the DL, excellent! I wouldn't suspect if Duchscherer is too far behind the way he was talking about his hip.

What a season.

Man... that was a good win after Embree and Witasuck did their best to give it away.

At least Scoot won't be in the outfield. Snelling to DL

Funny stuff from today's BB Pro Hit List.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ar...articleid=6246

"Jack Cust's four-game binge (five homers, 12 RBI) helps the A's storm the Hit List's top ten. Cust is hitting .281/.439/.875 since being acquired from the Padres for the Taco Cabana's Chimichanga Combo Plate #3."

dola,

From KG's May 16th chat at BB Pro.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ch...php?chatId=297

"Alex (SF, CA): So should Cust have gotten a chance as a DH somewhere (Orioles I am looking at you) before this point? Or is this just a flash in the pan and have the scouts been right all along?

Kevin Goldstein: Yeah, before you start printing your "Jack Cust -- We Told You So" T-shirts, look beyond the small sample size averages and notice the 14 whiffs in 32 at-bats. Nobody can perform well with that little contact. So his BABIP is at .500 -- totally unsustainable. He's not this good, and he might not be as bad as he was in the past. He goes into today with a career MLB average of .233/.352/.477, which is pretty much what he is in my mind."

Seeing as Cust has a career .293 EQA with that .233 average, that ain't bad at all, if that's how his career production turns out.

That's Dave Kingman with a lot of walks. -Not to shabby of pickup for a bag of game used balls.

I'd have held out for a combo plate #3.

Now that Chad Gaudin is good or something he needs a nickname. Howabout "The Gaudanimal."

I think that's what's growing on Chad's chin.

Good god almighty! Do my eyes deceive me or is that Gaudin with a 42 BB/36 K line from last season as a reliever. Whodda thunk he'd be this good a year later in a starting role.

One and the same. The knock on him has *always* been his control. Great stuff, but too many walks.

Good to see that he's gotten that fixed.

Oh, and did I ever pick the right game to be at last night! Tailgating, BBQ, Jack Daniels, Newcastle Brown, Zito getting pummelled, and dropping 15 on the Gnats!

Perfect friday.

Odd, as he didn't have that problem as a minor leaguer, 2.5 BB/9 IP.

Gaudin's off to a fine start for a former 34th round pick. 24-20, 2.69 ERA as a farmhand.

dola,

Despite the fine minor league performances, Gaudin's not cost his new teams much in two career trades, going for cash and a PTBNL.

Transactions:
Drafted - Selected by Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 34th Round (1009th overall) of 2001 amateur entry draft (June-Reg) Aug 23,2001 - signed Dec 12,2004 - Traded by Devil Rays to Blue Jays for Kevin Cash. Dec 5,2005 - Traded by Blue Jays to Athletics for a player to be named later

It's Jack Cust's world and we're just lucky to be a part of it.

Anyone know why Cust never got a chance with the O's? He had a .870-ish OPS in 73 ABs in 2003, but was sent back down to AAA for 2004. Some comments on BTF said that he wasn't showing as much power for the O's AAA affiliate as he had been before then. I'm sort of wondering who did the O's decide to play in the corner-OF positions, 1B, and DH ahead of Cust in 2004?

Btw, Jack proceeded to have his worst AAA season in 2004, ensuring a few more years in the minors before his recent breakthrough:

Cust's major- and minor-league numbers:
