Can someone explain to me the scoring system that's used? I understand that there are 10 points per round, but it always seems to be 10-9. Why not just give a total of 3 points a round?

Thankfully, I got to watch the fight. Good stuff.

It is scored that way (as opposed to a rounds scoring system) to differentiate between a round won (10-9), a round dominated or with a knockdown (10-8), a round with multiple knockdowns (10-7) et cetera. Although, a round scored with a wider margin than 10-8 is rather rare these days - there more than likely would be a technical stoppage by the ref in those cases.

So in theory, a fighter could lose the opening two rounds then knock his opponent down in the third and be even on the cards. Under a rounds system he would still be down in that fight.

There also are other scoring systems.

some jurisdictions used to use a 5-point system. Not sure why they decided on a 10-point system. Maybe bigger numbers seem more impressive?

Some here may be able to give you a better version complete with historical context.

I heard Jim Lampley on the radio going to lunch - he puts Floyd in there with Pernell & Roy. He said all 3 think their records should speak for themselves despite the fact they take a safety 1st approach.

I wouldn't put Castillo on the same level of a Hearns or Hagler when it comes to facing a dangerous foe. I don't disrepect Floyd because he talks a lot but people loved Tyson because he knocked people out. Same in baseball with HR hitters, that's what people remember & why a guy like Floyd might not get all the credit he deserves. They love powerful guys who knock people out in big fights. Heck, Larry Holmes probably deserves more credit for his career too but doesn't get it because he came right after Ali's era.

But Ray was smart enough to be nice on camera & not swear or act thug like - hence the 7-Up commercials.

Even Floyd Sr. thought his son was swearing too much on 24/7.

That's about the only logical explanation

I have never heard of a 10-4 round (would that be dead or simply lifeless) so a 5 point system would seem to suffice.

He is very underrated because he is a boxer, not a slugger and because he is a punk .. but as I pointed out Leonard has drug and spousal abuse problems but everyone loved him because he was nice on camera.

FWIW I thought Holmes was very underrated in his day also, of course he is getting more respect the further into history we go.

True. I know it was a different era but I wonder if people liked Willie Pep back in the day - a true master boxer? Looking back now, he's viewed as an all time great but with pure boxers, are they like artists - few really appreciate them until they're long retired or dead?

I dont exactly understand most of this post. I would disagree that "we all saw this fight and are that Oscar won by UD" (I would say just the opposite is true) Whatever the rest of your post means I wish I knew. You sound like a De le Hoya mark however.

We are at Russia was in the SHOCK too. The judges are not respect Oscar, but to Mayweather jr. more more more.

While I don't think he is in the class of SRR I wouldn't have any problems picking him in a fight with Leonard. I was in the camp that thougt Leonard was always overrated. Hearns would be a tough matchup for PBF because of the jab. Oscar was effective using his jab against PBF also but couldn't sustain it.

As far as Zima goes .. he still thinks Alan Green beat Miranda so I wouldn't concern yourself too much with his opinions.
I would stop short of saying Oscar didn't have the skills, I would say that his age is eroding his skills. It was a big dissappointment to me that Oscar lost, but loose he did. I think Oscar. like all great fighters before him, is at that stage when he should consider retiring before his skills diminish further and he hangs out too long like Ali. My hats off to a great fighter. I am not sure boxing will survive Floyd.

Hard as it is to believe, Pep had his share of haters as well early in his title reign but I think he silenced the critics when he showed so much heart outpointing saddler in the rematch. Oddly enough, his successer, Saddler who was a KO puncher had even more haters because he was viewed as a dirty fighter and a bully in the ring, probably undeserved though.

btw I read an article by Steve Kim of Maxboxing today who said that he thought Shane Mosley and Pernell Whitaker looked better against Oscar than Floyd did.

Do you guys agree?

Mosley is more offensive than Floyd so I can see that. Not sure about Whitaker.

You don't give a 35 year old Shane much of a chance to beat Floyd though, do you?

Just curious because of the 2 recent Sugar's, I'd think Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime would have a much better shot against Floyd than even a prime Sugar Shane would - let alone the one past his prime.

I give Mosley a good shot .. but as to the second part of your question I'm a bit biased because I never thought Ray was that great of a fighter. Mosley might have the right combination of speed and power to beat him. Although I don't see anyone 147 and down really having much of a shot against PBF.

If Cotto put the pressure on him that Castillo did and banged the body for the first 6 rounds ... maybe. Margarito having any kind of shot against him is a joke. Paul Williams is a bit too inexperienced but could keep Floyd away with the jab. Cintron would never land a punch. Hatton would be interesting since he applies a lot of pressure but I have to think his face would be a bloody mess by the 4th or 5th round.

Yeah, I recalled you thinking that about Shane, that's why I asked.

Here's one where we'll have to agree to disagree again because I think Ray Leonard would have beaten Shane had they fought in their primes.
