3010 - Problem with "Re-Import Name and Ethnicity Database"
When I import new names/first_names files, new players created are rife with "Joe" as first name (way more than normal) and "Nobody" as a last name.
Testing: The names files I used were the same ones I have been using in OOTP2006 with no problem. But to make sure it wasn't my custom files, I started a new league with my custom files--and zero players out of thousands had "Nobody" as a last name. I removed my files and restored the files that came with the game, then hit the "Re-Import Name and Ethnicity Database" button. I created 1000 free agents, and 169 had the last name "Nobody". BTW, I have not customized the game in any other way (yet!). I can't really identify a common thread...the "Nobodys" come from different countries, non-standard characters seem to be showing up OK (á, í, -, ', etc). I know you guys are busy, thanks for listening. |

Grrr. I'm sure I tested this before, but you're right.
I've logged this as TT # 3010. Thanks, Steve |

Joe Nobody in Rookie Draft
Fifth season of play. Made some tweaks to the ethnicities.txt and names.txt files. It's time for the rookie draft now and there are 82 players with the last name Nobody, and about half of those have the first name Joe. Help?
Thanks, pw (Mac Version) |

Joe Nobody is used when the game can't determine a correct name. Therefore, it seems likely you might have messed something up in the names.txt file. What sort of things were you changing? Can you post a copy somewhere that we could look at? |

Sure: http://www.trabucoroad.com/names.txt
All I did was add a couple names (I work for a Japanese company and I thought it would be funny if the CEO came up as a farmhand at some point). Much thanks, ps |

Can you post the ethnicities too?
Also, if you can point me to the specific names you added (if there's just a few, it might help. |

So ethnicities:
http://www.trabucoroad.com/ethnicities.txt Only thing changed on this one is U.S. (Modern) line. On the names, I *think* the only one I added was Fukakushi in the Japanese section. Thanks again, ps |

A puresmoke, I figured out what it is. Assuming you used the reimport option to bring in your new names and ethnicities, it's a bug I logged earlier, TT # 3010. The re-import feature is causing the Joe Unknowns, not your files.
![]() I'm going to merge this with the thread on that bug, OK? |

Fine by me -- guess I should've looked in this folder before starting the thread in the first place, eh? Well, I'll look forward to a few seasons of changing players' names for them.
![]() Thanks again, ps |

![]() FWIW, you can do that via the in-game editor, or via the Import/Export rosters feature. Of course, the in-game editor has an automatic "new name" button, which is kinda neat. Sorry about that. |

This issue has been claimed fixed in the first patch, although it hasn't yet been verified by the beta team.
Thanks! Steve |

BUG: Attack of the Joe Nobodies
Okay, I finally started actually playing a league. I got to the amateur draft, and much to my chagrin, a good portion of the draft class is named "Joe Nobody". Roughly 80% has the first name Joe, and maybe 20% has the last name Nobody. I can see a Francis Nobody and a Scotty Nobody, and I can see a Joe Moon and a Joe Carver, for instance.
I didn't edit the name files at all, except the nicknames file. I basically took all the nicknames out of the nicknames file because I hate nicknames. Is that what did this?

I saw Battists mention in another thread that editing the name file could cause this. So, your removal of nicknames could be the cause.

Oddly, the game generated all the initial players without a hitch. I went forward to spring training and this happened.
I emptied out the nicknames file of 2006 without issue. I hope I'm not forced to keep them in this time.

Actually, I just remembered something...
I re-imported the name and Ethnicity database. I actually returned it to the original because I had edited the ethnicities. So I have all the original files except nicknames (which is there but is blank). At startup I had an altered ethnicities.txt file, but upon reimport it went back to the original. That means either there is something wrong with the ethnicities.txt that came with the game (doubtful, since I don't think others are having the problem) or, more likely, there is a bug in the ability to re-import names and ethnicities. Can someone else please try importing names and ethnicities and then simming to the amateur draft to see if a bunch of nobodies are created? I really hope this doesn't mean the league I just spend days creating is trashed.

Okay, this is really weird.
Not only am I getting the Joe Nobodies; some of them have nicknames -- even though there is nothing in my nicknames file. Something is seriously messed up with the importing ability, methinks. I'm going to test it with a scratch league.

Okay, yeah. Second attempt, all defaults and original files (including nicknames) and still the Joe Nobodies.
Apparently importing the names & ethnicities database doesn't work.
