Since Tony LaRussa is the biggest whiner in sports about other teams cheating, if there was even a .0000001% chance in his mind that it was a foreign substance he would've been all over that.

He must have switched to the "clear" after the first inning.

Agree with Dad, voted for grass stain. If he had tanked with clean hands, conviction based on circumstantial evidence. I'd like to test him for other possibilities, however. Where the heck did this guy come from?

He even has some on his face.
I've seen a lot of pitchers, myself included, that rub their pitching hand against the dirt on the pitching mound or bullpen to get a better grip on the ball. From what I know, there's no rule against that. Seeing some of it on his face has me believe that he did just that and then accidentally wiped some on his face with his hand maybe to brush away sweat or an itch. |

I wouldn't put it past Rogers to try and get some kind of edge, and it's fishy because it was also apparently there in another game.
But since he seemed to pitch just fine afterwards, not sure if there's much of a case. |

Obvious he wipes with that hand and didn't use enough toilet paper, this is a clear advert for kids to wash their hands before they leave the bathroom.

That picture shows it on his thumb as well. Most likely on fingertips by the way he's holding his hand in that picture.
It doesnt appear to be mud to me, but if it had been something major and the Cards were aware, they'd have had it checked. |

It is all very curious.
I'm not sure if it looks like dirt or not. And the fact that it is there in the same spot in different games stretching back to Rogers' run of dominance is intriguing. He says nobody said anything. The umps said something different. Why didn't the Cardinals say something in the top of the inning before he could wash it off? Why didn't the umps inspect it closely. Of course, Rogers was dominating after the first inning, so did it really matter? As far as the location of the junk. It's in a rather obvious spot if it wasn't just dirt. Seems rather blatant. At the same time, it is a perfect location if you want to rub up with your other fingers while "blowing" into the hand, then rub the thumb on those fingers. So, a) the location doesn't vindicate him and b)but if he was doing something illegal, it seems rather ballsy to put it there. I really don't care. The Cards didn't hit him after the stuff was "washed" off, and they had their shot in the ninth. It didn't "cost" them the game. Still, it is really interesting because I'm not sure I buy the 'dirt' story and wouldn't put it beyond Rogers (or any other pitcher - heck, I suspect subtle doctoring is still more rampant than we imagine) to do something tricky.

Of course doctoring the ball is more rampant than we think.
The thing is, when it's actually found out, the pitcher is "wily" and "trying to get an edge" and just swept under the rug. When hitter uses a corked bat, or too much pine tar, or PEDs, etc, they're the devil incarnate.

Good find. This sums it up for me. I predict he doesn't have this smudge in his next game and the Cardinals knock him out of the game early. Quote:
Good post. I don't buy the "dirt" theory either. Especially, with the suspicious photo from the ALCS game up there. Too weird to just be coincidence. |

Nah, can't agree with that. I can remember pitchers caught cheating just as much as hitters caught cheating. Didn't seem to me like they got a free pass.

Who's to say he hasn't had this "smudge" problem all season? Try a google search and see if it's been there before. I'd be curious myself.

It's already been tainted IMHO. If the Tigers win the World Series there will always be doubt considering that their all-of-a-sudden ace had foreign material on his hand.
