calling all tigers fans!
So, how good is Randal Simon? The 300+ career BA looks pretty good. Whats his range like at 1B? Can he dig errant throws from SS/3B out of the dirt? Can he stretch and grab them if their off line? Rameriz and J.Wilson are not alwats acurate to first with their throws. Also, PNC is 320' to RF with a 21 foot wall. Do you think we'll see his HR numbers go up? Thanks.

I have no idea how he hit 19 HR last year playing in Comerica Canyon, maybe he started PUMPING IRON!!! He won't draw a walk to save his life, only 13 last year (5 of which were intentional) in 500 PA. He hit 0.301, but had an OBP of only 0.320 and an OPS of 0.779, which is not real good for a first baseman (career 0.305/0.336/0.787). I really don't see Simon being much of an upgrade over Young, except perhaps in the salary saving department. |

Simon isnt much defensively but offensively he is just a good hitter. He doesnt walk, but was also one of the toughest guys to fan, he's gonna give you a .300 avg, 40 2b, and 90 rbi. As a TIger fan, I think it was a good move for the Pirates.

Probably no more than 25, for whatever reason he isnt a power hitter despite his build, his swing was actually perfect for Comerica. Which of course ment that the Tigers had to trade their only good pitcher to get another First Baseman.
What do you know about who the Pirates gave up? |

Burnside, 25, is a hard throwing lefty (93-94) that got a late start in professional baseball. Some arm problems set him back in 2000, also. He pitched for our AA club this past year and ended up being converted from a started to a reliever. He has a chance to make the team in the pen, depending on how good the tigers bullpen is, but he probably needs a full year at AAA. There's a good chance he'll become a solid lefty reliever in the long run.
Roberto Novoa is a big fellow that throws very hard, sitting at around 96 consistantly. He has struggled with his control, but is young in terms of experience, although he turned out to be 2 years older than expected (23 instead of 21). Should begin the year at low-A this coming year. He has a high upside, but needs to learn control pretty quickly. At 23, he's a little old for A ball. |

Thanks, I guess the trade wasnt as bad for the Tigers as I had initially thought but Simon is a great professional hitter, think a fat John Olerud, without the walks.

Walks are the difference between Olerud being a very average player and Olerud being a repeated All Star.

And walks are the difference between Olerud being a repeated All Star and Simon being a marginal major league player.

As a Bucs fan (sigh) I'm pleased with the Simon deal. However, there's no way that the Pirates can get rid of K. Young - so I see them sharing time, with Young playing the late innings.
Anyone want Kevin Young? Anyone? C'mon! Please! |

I watched Simon for a while here in Detroit. I dont think much of his defense, I dont think he will need to clear a place on the mantle for gold gloves. I think he hits a little more for average and a little less power than David Ortiz. Simon doesnt walk or K much. I wouldnt expect much better power numbers due to the stadium. Comerica isnt that deep to RF and the wind seems to help out to right. I was real dissapointed that we lost him, because I think with D Young, the Tigers could have two .300+ hitters in the lineup. At 27, Simon could still improve, and his $290,000 makes him a no risk situation. I might be a stretch, but he could be the next Luis Gonzalez.

Yup. Pretty simple. You score runs by gettin people on base an driving them home. OBP measures your ability to get on base and SLG measures your ability to drive them home. It's really simple when you think about it.
