That's amazing. Seeing Detroit w/ the worst team batting avg in the majors is a shock.

Losing Kitt to retirement hurt alot. Of course the trades of Degal and Kreit were a huge factor as one would expect.

Seeing Kress, Perly, Mitchell all hitting well below their career averages is rough. I've also had to play musical chairs with the lineup more this year that almost all my other years combined due to lack of depth and guys going down with these month long injuries.

Now Coleman is out a month, which will force another lineup change and may require me to call up a AA batter to fill the hole at 1B. Allen has already hit 46HR in AA this year. Maybe he'll respond positively to a call up like Camacho did. But this latest injury is going to make it difficult to hold on to a winning record unless my pitchers step it up another notch.

George Young went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL. George has hit surprisingly well filling in for Coleman. He's hit .350 so far in August and is on a 6 game hitting streak. That .350 is so far above his career average that I am not wanting to count on him hitting like that for another month, so I may need to call up Rye Allen's powerful bat.

STANDINGS
61-56, #3 in the AL, 13.5 games behind KC, 7-7 in the first half of August

BAD NEWS
-Yet another lineup change will be required as Coleman is out for a month. He was hitting .385 in his 4 August games before leaving with a knee injury.
-Two solid starts were followed by two stinkers for Walter Pond. I was hoping for a bit more consistency out of him when I put him into the rotation.
-Kress (.260), Castaneda (.260), Perly (.239) all underperformed although Perly did at least hit for power (4HR, 9RBI).

GOOD NEWS
-George Young (.350, 7R) & Gale Adams (.333) were our top bats early on in August.
-John Nolting (3-1, 1.91) & Hal Andrew (2-1, 2.86) looked good. On 8/15 Hal Andrew was named Player of the Week.
-Matt Perly hit RBI # 1500 on 8/13.

ROSTER MOVES
-George Young's .350 was a very pleasant surprise this month, but it's so far above his career average that I'm not sure I want to hand him 1B for another month. I may need to call up Rye Allen's powerful bat earlier than I had planned.

STANDINGS
65-67, 5th in the AL, 22 games behind KC, 4-11 in the last 2 weeks

BAD NEWS
-We were bad in so many ways. This kind of reminds me how things were at times in my early days with the Tigers when we couldn't hit to save our lives but our pitching was good or we hit well, but our pitching or defense let us down.
-Perly is injured making him day2day for the remainder of the year... this with Coleman still out.
-Pond (1-4, 4.43) & Wolfe (2-5, 5.04) had a rough month.

GOOD NEWS
-Nolting had a decent month (4-3, 2.72).
-The minor league coaches are saying Lester Finley is about ready to make the jump to AA. I hope so as he is our only legit CF prospect. He's been way up and down according to our scouts so hopefully this is a sign that he's settling in some.
-Our AAA coach is telling me SP Bill Lovely is ready to move up. Maybe I should consider him for the #4 spot for September. He's had two solid AAA years and seems to have nothing more to learn there.

BAD NEWS
-10-13 in September isn't what we were hoping for. We finished with a losing record for the first time in my time as a GM.
-John Patterson got injured in the final week and took some very unfortunately talent hits. Lester Finley had some bad talent hits earlier in the season and has nearly bounced back. Hopefully John will do the same as he is one of my favorite young pitchers in the game right now.
-Bill Lovely was called up for the final month of the season and got roughed up a bit in our rotation going 2-2, 6.28. Unfortunately his previous employer burned up all his options years so he's on our roster for better or for worse from this day forward as he would almost certainly be grabbed if he had to pass waivers. Hopefully he'll have a good spring training and begin to carry his load next year.
-Roy Wolfe also had a rough month going 1-4, 4.89 and finished with his first losing season since 1948.

GOOD NEWS
-Coleman came back from injury and hit .368, 2HR in 9 games.
-Mitchell (.342, 10RBI), Shirley (.339, 11R) & Kress (.325, 19R, 15BB) also finished the year strong.
-Nolting (3-2, 2.54) & Andrew (3-1, 3.11) were our top starters in Sept.
-At the end of the year we have the #1 rated farm system. Last year we finished with (by far) the worst farm system. Hopefully we will have a lucky draft this next year and make it stronger.

Holy crap, are you kidding me? I've lost two and a half seasons of posts?!?!?!?!

Arg. I'm not sure that I see the point of continuing this thread if this site is going to be so pathetic with their recoveries.

CAREER LEADERBOARD
HR - Perly #5
RBI - Perly #11
SVs - Patterson #12

THE BAD
-in 1960 the development gods continued to be unkind on the Tigers. Long followed his ROY year last year with a decent year stat-wise. However, multiple hits to his power ratings and also some valuable CON talent loss... it is very unlikely that he'll be able to repeat this years #1 in HR tie next year. Several other prospects also lost talent making their chances of being impact major league players very slim.
-SP Perry Wanklen lead the league in losses... although he did at least manage a Player of the week in September pitching two consecutive 3H shutouts and then allowing only 1 run in his final game of the season. He finished 5-1 in his final 6 games, so there is some hope for this guy.
-Injuries... we had some bad timing with injuries, but honestly, we should probably put this in the good category as we clearly faired better than other teams, especially the way we avoided season enders and career enders like Cleveland's devastating loss of Herman Labombard.

THE GOOD
-Larry Long was #1 in the entire league in RBI, tied for #1 overall in HR. He was also #1 in the AL in TRPL (tie) & SLG. He was an all star. He also was the Batter of the Month in August going .290, 11HR, 28RBI, 18R. Pretty good stuff the year following his ROY award.
-David Castaneda got his 2000th career hit on 4/26/1960, off Lukas Dietrich (CLE)...
-Luke Logan was only a few SB short of the Tiger record for most in a season.
-Dick Sharkey managed a 17-13 record on a team that went 64-90. I dubbed him our "ace" at the start of the season and he responded with the best effort of all our SP.
-Closer John Patterson lead the AL in saves by 5 despite our terrible record.
-Bub Turnbull tore up AAA going .329 for two seasons and then made his ML debut as a September call up this year hitting .278 for the month. He's got a legitimate shot at ROY next year.
-SS Edgar Dillon is progressing nicely going from A-ball to AA. Our coaches are now claiming he's already ready for AAA. If he were to have a good spring training then we would be forced to make a decision at SS sooner than we expected. He's clearly the better glove over Turnbull there and Turnbull really looks best defensively at 1B. But then we'd have to displace Allen. And then there's Nasty Camacho... another average glove but reliable hitter who will continue to be forced into super sub duty. We clearly have a log jam in middle IF. But then again, Long's talent drops have made us nervous enough about 3B so we are not so eager to deal Turnbull who could move to 3B instead of 1B if he had to. Too many possibilities... hurting my brain. There should be some interesting ST battles.

END OF SEASON AWARDS
BATTER OF THE YEAR - Larry Long
GOLD GLOVES - CF Lester Finley

1961 PRESEASON

RETIRED:
-Dusty Keiper
-Walter Pond
-Elton Faulkner
-Sam Cheney
-David Castaneda
-Ben Lutske

EXPANSION DRAFT LOSSES:
-SS Eddie Nickerson
-MR Bill Skow
-MR Mike Brazil
-3B Bernie Spence
-SP Lewis Betz
-2B Matt Perly
-MR Magnus George

-Watching Matt Perly retire on another teams bench is going to suck quite a lot. I wish I had been able to have the time to be more creative with my protected list to ensure he would retire as a Tiger. He's just one of those guys who doesn't know when to hang'em up.
-Dave Castaneda would have been another guy I wouldn't have wanted to see retire elsewhere, but luckily he chose to call it a career rather than allow him self to be drafted in expansion.
-I was hoping Eddie Nickerson would some how escape the attention of the expansion teams, but deep down I knew he was gone. But with Moe Todd showing signs of also being a good SS prospect, we knew we could afford to let one of them go.
-Magnus George has been our setup guy for a few years now. But he turns 38 this year and didn't look like he had much left in the tank towards the end of the season. So, future-wise, he will not be a big loss. But our BP was already weak and has been made weaker with these expansion draft losses. I'm not yet sure who I'm going to be able to count on to help Patterson close out games.

SPRING TRAINING
-We got a couple of really nice scouting reports on SS/3B Moe Todd (now a 6/6/4/7/7 talent) and SP Alex Childress (was a 4/5/5 talent, now a 6/7/6).
-SS Edgar Dillon's bat is nearly major league ready and would be a big defensive improvement at short over Camacho and Turnbull. He'll move up to AAA for sure, but I'll let Turnbull keep his starting SS spot for a while longer and hope that Bub rebounds some of that nasty talent hit he took late last year.
-2B Luke Logan's OBP should improve this year as his eye has never been sharper.

"It's very rare that you can start a team with a player as knowledgable and passionate about the game as Matt Perly," says new Washington Senators GM J.D. Rockwell, at the conclusion of the expansion draft. "In addition to his unparalleled baseball knowledge and his winning attitude, we have drafted a player who will be able to motivate the rest of his team. I've not seen a groundout that he hasn't hustled to first on, and it's that same attitude we want here in Washington."
