EuroLeague - professional baseball in Europe

First off, for anyone that was reading my historical timeline, I apologise for letting you down - but as I said at the start, it can come back as it is all completed. That I feel may have been the problem for me, making up stories over such a long period of time can become repetitive.

Anyway, we have thanks to blackrussian New Zealand baseball, so if the Kiwis can have pro baseball, why not Europe, yeah?

So in late 2004, twelve ownership groups set up a European based league, drawing on both independent players from North America, and locally qualified national team players.

Events leading to opening day
Nov. 24, 2004 – The EuroLeague of baseball is formed at a meeting in The Hague, Netherlands. The franchises will be based in seven countries (Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden), in cities to be announced at the league’s first general meeting in London on January 26th.

Jan. 20 – The planned general meeting in London on the 26th is cancelled, leading to speculation that the league may not play a single game.

Feb. 5 – German sports network DSF and pay TV platform Premiere Deutschland announce a $105 million television deal for the first three years of the new baseball EuroLeague, although as of yet, no announcement as to where the teams will be based has been made, nor where the players will come from.

Feb. 24 – The UK’s leading sports channel Sky Sports announce a $185 million package for the first four years to the EuroLeague for broadcasting rights, and in a press statement announce the postponed general meeting will now be held on March 3rd in London. The deal also includes broadcasting to Italy, where Sky also runs a satellite television platform.

Mar. 1 – A report in German newspaper Rheinische Post says that Dusseldorf along with Cologne and Berlin will be home for three teams in the new baseball EuroLeague, to be announced officially on March 3rd.

Mar. 3 – The meeting of team owners finally takes place, and at the end of it the following announcements were made:
There will be twelve franchises based in seven countries. Those cities are Amsterdam, Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, London, Madrid, Manchester, Milan, Paris, Rome, Rotterdam, and Stockholm.
The twelve teams will play in two leagues, the Atlantic League – Amsterdam, London, Madrid, Manchester, Paris, and Rotterdam, and the Continental League – Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Milan, Rome, and Stockholm.
The league will play a 92-game regular season – 68-games within their league, and 24-games across the two leagues. The season finale will be a best-of-five game playoff between the Atlantic League and Continental League champions.
And although many players will be drawn from North America, each team will be able to add to their roster ‘nationals’, players eligible to play for the national team where the team is based.

Mar. 22 – Following poor ticket sales, and failure to secure a site for the construction of a stadium, the Madrid franchise is transferred to the bigger baseball city of Barcelona. The EuroLeague announces that the city of Madrid will still be considered in any future expansion.

Apr. 9 – The first day of the inaugural draft gets underway in Manchester, with the results as follows:
Round 1
Rotterdam pick: P Hubert Maroney (dnp)
Berlin pick: P Thomas Cabot
Amsterdam pick: P Pedro Frisina (dnp)
Cologne pick: P Oliver Begaye

Apr. 10 – The second day of the draft concludes.

Apr. 11 – At the final day of the spring session, the EuroLeague announces that pan-European broadcaster Eurosport will show ‘Friday Night Baseball’. Fifteen games will be shown during the season on the channel, plus the All-Star Game and EuroLeague Championship, in a deal worth $48 million a year.
On the same day, the 2005 schedule is revealed, with opening day on May 1st, with Amsterdam at Manchester, and Rotterdam at Paris.

Apr. 14 – After the great highs of the past few days, comes a big low, with many highly drafted players deciding to stay in the USA and fight their way through the minor leagues, fearing either that the EuroLeague will not be competitive enough to get them to the majors, or that the ‘nationals’ would be picked ahead of them regardless of ability. Rotterdam is hardest hit, losing their first three draft picks.

Apr. 22 – EuroLeague announces that the 2005 All-Star Game will be held in Milan, and also announces the six cities that are being analysed for possible expansion – Birmingham, Copenhagen, Kyiv, Madrid, Moscow, and Prague.

Apr. 29 – Eurosport announce their ‘Friday Night Baseball’ schedule, with all 12 teams shown at least once:
EUROSPORT (Paris) – Europe’s leading sports channel Eurosport, are delighted to announce the 2005 EuroLeague baseball schedule of games to be shown on the channel. Like many baseball fans in Europe, Eurosport is excited in anticipation of the first professional baseball league in European history, and are pleased to be chosen as the main broadcaster of live games and highlight shows throughout Europe.

Star Player
Amsterdam has a strong side led by Dominican Republic rightfielder Adan Torres. The 28-year-old may be small, but this guy could be the MVP of the league this season – he has all the batting prowess of a hall of fame incumbent, and could win multiple Gold Gloves in the field as well, his fielding is in that elite group of players.

National Player
Catcher Maikel Benner is the player to watch. Although he does not seem to have the fundamental abilities at the plate yet, he’s only 25, and with his national team coach Robert Eenhoorn in charge, should get the nod over Jerry Truss. If, and with many of the nationals, it is a big if, Eenhoorn and his staff can improve Benner’s awareness at the plate, he could become the local hero for the team.
Nationals: Denny Beljaards, Patrick Beljaards, Maikel Benner, Forstin Coenraad, Rob Cordemans, Gregory Gustina, Danny Rombley, Tjerk Smeets, Robin van Doornspeek

Star Player
Barcelona will struggle to make a big influence with their batting, therefore the pitching staff will have to help out the Spaniards with the combination of Brian Stratton and Jason Roybal looking a very good combination to start and then relieve respectively.

National Player
Sebastian Tesouro, a 25-year-old leftfielder – good in the outfield, above average at the plate, with his major problem getting bat on ball regularly. If he can do that, he can help with the offensive production problems.
Nationals: Pedro Belmonte, Javier Civit, Juan Garcia, Miguel Mora, Nestor Perez, Sebastian Tesouro, Jorge Valles, Javier Zabalza

Shortstop Burl Poulson, he can hit the ball further and more powerfully than most, expect him to be in the top three in homeruns…

National Player
…but Drew Bignall could be the star of the league. The 20-year-old pitcher actually comes from Minneapolis and qualifies for Great Britain via one of his parents, but man, nobody will care if he can become a star in the league. Not only can he pitch better than most, he could also play as a first or third baseman for London.

Uh, no one…that’s the problem for Manchester, they are going to struggle, it’s that simple.

Star Player
Second baseman Joseph Crawford. The 23-year-old from the USA could well become a career leader in batting average, it’s almost as if he has some sort of telepathic reading on what the pitcher is going to do. He could become the star in Paris – who says the Americans can’t get along with the French?

Closer Michiel van Kampen – reliable and usually gets the job done, without being arrogant or spectacular.

Atlantic League Projection 2005

Half way home, it must be time for the first league projection - using a highly scientific formula that is so top secret it can't be revealed... yeah right, it's really just total guesswork

Anyway for what it's worth...
Atlantic League Projection
1st – Amsterdam
2nd – London
3rd – Paris
4th – Barcelona
5th – Rotterdam
6th – Manchester

I hate to think what the standard of Ukrainian baseball players is like, I struggled enough to get the German players - although I guess if you can finish fourth in the 2003 European Championships by losing 21-0 in seven innings to the Netherlands and get a team (*cough*...Sweden), then anything's possible.

Talking of German teams, the three German based franchise reports are coming next.

Pitcher Thomas Cabot – an all-star in any league, and definitely one in this one. Strikeouts – easy, pop-ups – easier, shutouts – come on, you’ve got to ask him to do something harder than that!

National Player
The German teams have been allowed players from the German Baseball League to makeup their staff, due to the poor quality of their own players. Even then, the only one to make the active roster is third baseman Ryan Crotin, so he’s obviously the pick…
But seriously, Crotin has a good awareness for getting bat on ball and should bat over .300 on the year.
Nationals: Marvin Appiah, Ryan Crotin (Canada – BL), Klaus Hopfensperger, Michael Otto, Markus Winkler, Dominik Wulf

I was only going by results in this year's European Championships going on right now in the Czech Republic. Ukraine so far have lost 9-1 to the hosts, 10-0 to France, and today 3-2 to Greece. Three games played, three losses, even the mighty Great Britain have won one game!

At the moment, Russia have won one and lost two games in Group A, and are right this second trailing 5-4 to Italy, with the Italians batting in the top of the eighth.

Oliver Begaye can be a team’s go-to-guy for many years to come. If you need the 24-year-old to pitch you to victory, the young American will do just that.
And even if you get past Begaye, closer Harold Defoor is pretty intimidating on the mound.

National Player
Like Berlin, Cologne have just one player on the active roster, and it’s another Canadian named Ryan – centerfielder Ryan Lucas Balan.
Nationals: Martin Almstetter, Ryan Lucas Balan (Canada – BL), Cody Crossman (USA – BL), Kai Gronauer, Joel Rodriguez, Jan Russel

The man from a country but is named after another – Dominican Republic’s 21-year-old shortstop Israel Baca. But unfortunately, all that shows you is how poor this team may actually be. He may be a nice, average player who will bat .285, with 15 homeruns, and 40 RBI but when you have nothing else in the way of offence, those types of numbers are not going to help your team.

National Player
Finally, someone on the active roster who’s German (not a Canuck called Ryan! – Ed.). His name is Alexander Lauterbach, he’s a third baseman from Regensburg, and his main asset is that he can hit the ball into the outfield more often than not, making him a key RBI man for the team with the lowest payroll in both leagues.
Nationals: Wes Bentley (USA – BL), Simon Guhring, Alexander Lauterbach, Jason McCarter (USA – BL), Manuel Moller, Jendrick Speer

National Player
…because of 34-year-old Peter Nyari. The wily old fox may be coming towards the end of his career, but Nyari is going to be a ‘national’ that can help his team hugely. He’s able to use the K-zone to it’s fullest, getting out of innings quickly, and keeping the pitch count low.
Nationals: Anthony Billisi, Luca Bischeri, Frank Candela, Mario Chiarini, Riccardo de Santis, Robert Fontana, Seth la Fera, Peter Nyari, Giovanni Pantaleoni

Continental League - Rome

Good evening blackrussian once again, I looked at your website (well the one you posted obviously) but I see the statistics haven't been updated since 2000... oh well, it doesn't matter - Kyiv and Moscow are high up on the expansion list, lets put it that way.

Code:

Star Player
James McElroy is a huge prospect in the league. The 24-year-old leftfielder has a great plate presence – you try and pitch round him, he’ll just draw a walk; you strike him out, the next time up he’ll smash the ball out the park. If there’s one thing he can improve on in a big way is his fielding, especially the throwing range he has (or has not), but this dude will win you more games than he loses you.

National Player
Rome manager Mauro Mazzotti only sees one member of his squad good enough to start the year on the active roster – third baseman Igor Schiavetti. He wears the number one jersey, so he must be good, right?
Nationals: Stefano Bazzarini, David Dallospedale, Gabriele Ermini, Danny Gorrin, Marcello Malagoli, Sandy Patrone, Igor Schiavetti

Look above…do you see anything that says ‘National’ next to somebody’s name…?
Although manager Bill Mathews is partially to blame, there is a very good closer off the active roster in Magnus Pilegard. The 27-year-old is a dominating force in late or tight situations; expect him to replace Richard Hufnagel soon.
Nationals: Hakan Borjes, Philip Gaijzler, Per Lindgren, Rickard Ljung, Magnus Pilegard

Continental League Projection 2005

Yes it's that time again... another league projection. The results here are once again calculated from a secret department... or deep inside the author's brain.

Anyway, this is, for what it's worth (ie. nothing), the Continental League prediction.

Continental League Projection
1st – Berlin
2nd – Rome
3rd – Cologne
4th – Stockholm
5th – Milan
6th – Dusseldorf

Next up, Opening Day in Manchester and Paris!

Opening Day 2005

May 1st – Opening Day
Adapted from The Times newspaper
Just how many people wanted to go and watch a professional baseball game in Europe? Not many said the doom mongers, ‘how many Europeans even KNOW how the game is played, I mean they like cricket, a sport that to baseball countries is equally indecipherable’ one hack from a newspaper said. I think it was the New York Post, but I can’t be sure.
Just as well then that the fans in Manchester and Paris showed up in force, on a balmy May Day, to catch the opening stanza of what looks like being a fledgling and successful European league.
32370 fans crowded in to Manchester’s Baseball Park to see their hometown team take 13 innings to defeat Amsterdam 4-3, whilst in Paris, 29238 saw their team beat the other Dutch team Rotterdam 5-2.

In Manchester, it was asking just too much for a ‘national’ to smash the winning homerun wasn’t it? So, it was left to first baseman James Johnstone to hit his second homer of the afternoon off national closer Forstin Coenraad in the bottom of the 13th inning, to send an attentive and curious crowd home happy.

Paris also started out with a win 5-2 over Rotterdam, with Frenchman Samuel Meurant picking up the league’s first ever save, ending the ninth inning by striking out George Domingo and Alex Ciprian.
