Still never seen him with the Mariners (1979) or Cubs (1982) but Topps Vault put up a couple of nice ones today during his rookie year in Milwaukee (and before that, as an Oriole farmhand).

Same for Royle Stillman, another Orioles farmhand who went on to the White Sox in 1977.

Stillman may confuse future historians. He appears as the starting shortstop in a series of seven Orioles games in September, 1975. This was Earl Weaver innovating at the expense of roster expansion (and adapting a maneuver used to keep Lou Gehrig's streak at least once). Stillman would be listed as the shortstop and lead off or second hitter. He'd get his ups, and then in the bottom of the first, light-hitting Mark Belanger would "take over" for him at short.

Ah, major league baseball 136 years ago. Frank Hankinson had been the starting third baseman of the Chicago White Stockings as a rookie in 1878, and was then moved to the starting rotation in 1879. He joined Cleveland in 1880 - as the third baseman.

Hankinson, who couldn't hit, lasted through the New York Mets' move to Kansas City in 1888 and then went home to New York. I can't find anything to confirm this, but there's a Frank Hankinson public school in Staten Island, and a school board member by the same name active at the same time as the ballplayer's later years, so it's an excellent chance the school is named for him despite his OPS+ of just 77 ;-)

Hankinson is depicted on his extraordinary "Four Base Hits" card from 1887.

I am looking for some 1980s Mariners, often in particular years and uniforms. Color is best if it's out there.

Gary Wheelock (one game in 1980, I don't think he wore a mustache that year)
Bob Gallasso (In the 1981-84 uniform with the new cap--Topps has him only in a spring shot with the 77-80 cap and uni)
Randy Stein, 1981 (wearing the 1981-84 uniform with the star around the trident, adopted that year)
Rich Bordi, 1982 (I have him in black and white, looking for color)
Edwin Nunez, 1982 or 1983 (I have him in black and white, looking for color)
John Moses, 1982-1984 (in the 1981-84 uniform--knowing the year of the shot would be nice)
Moses, 1985 or 1986 (in the 1985-86 uniform)
Ricky Nelson, 1982-1984 (in the 1981-84 uniform--knowing the year of the shot would be nice)

Talk about hiding in plain sight. The 1985 Milwaukee Brewers' yearbook is a treasure trove of color images of guys barely ever seen in Milwaukee uniforms.

We begin with the ex-Met second baseman (not the later hard-hitting outfielder) Brian Giles, who played 34 games in Milwaukee in 1985.

With the '85 Brewers he had arguably his best season of a career that didn't live up to expectations in Cincinnati, but for our purposes - pretty much the first non-card color Milwaukee image.

Two short stints in the outfield with the Brewers in '84 and '85. This is the first color image I've seen of him besides his way-too-late "rookie" card from Donruss in 1986.

It's a fairly short list of post-1990 Atlanta Braves that are hard find in color, but one on my list had always been Mark Whiten, Signed as a free agent on June 24, 1996, after his release by the Phillies. He was signed as insurance after David Justice's season on a check-swing injury. Whiten was only with the Braves for 36 games, less than two months, when he was traded on August 14 to the Mariners for a Class A pitcher to make room for Terry Pendleton's return. He had a game-winning, pinch-hit 3-rum homer in his final game as a Brave.

But Whiten's Braves' image was right there all along -- as part of the perforated team set that was given away along with a Braves team photo.
