A quick flit over to the Eastern Shore now for a look at the Chicks out of Pocomoke City MD. Wherever possible, I refrain from the use of native imagery in my logos. Not trying to be all PC and that (see what I did there...) in the revisionist sense, I just think it's wrong in this day and age. Each to their own - no Judgie McJudgeface from me, as we say here in Australia.

I nearly went with this club's original moniker the Salamanders but stumbled upon the fab image I have used here and that settled it. This franchise was established in 1922 under that name, then folded the following season. They resurfaced as the Red Sox (at the same time becoming a Dodgers affiliate, go figure) in 1937 and then changed their nickname to the Chicks for their final 1940 season. All of these were plated in the Eastern Shore League with little success and no playoff appearances.

Our final stop today takes us across the border to look at the Lyns out of Ottawa, Ontario. A slightly more straightforward story for this club than most of the others we've covered, with it being created from scratch and joining the International League in 1993, playing there until 2007 and winning exactly 1000 games while doing so, including the 1995 title. Sadly, the club's demise and exit from Ottawa was an acrimonious one as the business of business bled into the business of baseball as it so often does.

A couple sets from Vegas, baby now - not much of a spiel for the first of them with the Stars merely being the name used between 1983 and 2000 by the franchise presently known as the Aviators, the A's current AAA farm club.

The late game in this Vegas double-header features an entirely different club, namely the Wranglers that began as a charter member of the Sunset League (and a Boston Braves affiliate) in 1947 and remained in business on-and-off until 1958. The mighty Bob Veale was a member of that final season group, and the city would have to wait a quarter-century to see another baseball team settle there.

Waaaaaaaayyyyyy up yonder now to check on the Timberjacks out of Missoula, MT. This club had a few goes at it between 1892 and 1960 but - be it on account of the weather or low-density population or whatever - just couldn't make it stick. Still, they gave it their all and for that must be commended. The club's most successful season was in 1959 as a member of the Pioneer League, when - with Jack McKeon holding the reins and Jim Kaat on the roster - they finished 2nd with a 70-59 league.

On the topic of pioneers, Clark Griffith played for Missoula in their very first season; future C&W star Charlie Pride, in their final one.

We stay up in the hinterland for my take on the Speed Boys out of Muskegon MI. Minor league baseball was a near-constant and long-term presence in Muskegon from the late 19th- to mid 20th-century, with the Speed Boys / Speeders naming one of the earlier conventions. This franchise, which counts guys such as Elston Howard, Frank Fitzsimmons and Doc White among its alumni, is perhaps best known as the Reds.

Dublin GA is our next stop as I tackle the Irish, a club that had an on-and-off run between 1949 and 1962, mainly as a member of the Georgia State League. As is usually the case from this era, they change affiliations frequently and were at one point part of the Braves, Pirates, O's and Reds farm systems. Earl Weaver, on his way up to his HoF managerial career in the bigs, skippered this club in 1958.

More southern fried goodness as we take a look at the Pilgrims out of Natchez MS. The existence of a MiLB franchise in Natchez was very much a stop-start affair, with teams coming and going with great frequency between 1893 and 1953. The club was the Giants affiliate in 1942 and split time between a bunch of different leagues (including the Evangeline, EC!!), only attaining some success right at the very end with a couple Cotton States League titles.
