Auburn (NY) Falcons Specs

Our travelling takes us up to the Finger Lakes region of New York state for a look at the Falcons out of Auburn. This city has a long and storied baseball history, being the original home of what is now known as Minor League Baseball but was then known as the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. The Falcons were the final iteration of a club that was inaugurated in 1887 as the Auburnians but which is perhaps best known as the Cayugas. The club has many MLB graduates, mostly 19th- or early 20th-century types with Fred Dunlap and Tommy Leach arguably the best-known.

After the ultra-modernism of the Winchester set, you might note here that I have savagely overcorrected with a positively minimal and traditional look for these guys.

Luckyman, this is some constructive criticism.
Please don't take it as being critical of your work and talent, which is very good.

I have 64 teams in my IPA... so I have to use a lot of different combinations of colors, so that the teams are distinct, sometimes in subtle differences... there are only so many ways to use red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.

Don't know if you have this problem... I just noticed you use Orange and Yellow a lot in this thread... lots of Red, too.

Yep, I know this is your thread and that is what you like and desire and that is fine... to thine own self be true.

Having said that, I would prefer more variation in your color choices.

Please don't be offended with my suggestion... I like your work very much overall.

Hey EC, how could one be offended by another's honest opinion - especially when put so considerately and politely, with much more emphasis on the constructive than the criticism? Not I, for one. I appreciate the feedback - good, bad or indifferent - and will take it under advisement.

That said, I will push back a bit. Colour choice is one of the key elements here, for the very reason you list: variety. It is certainly something I keep in the forefront of my mind.

Here is a screenshot of all the palettes used to this point. I check it constantly to keep that variety as wide as possible.

That shows about as diverse a range of colour choices as you can get, at least how I see it. Definitely could do with more greens; maybe some more blues as well. Yellow is definitely the most-used colour, but I think it is the vividness of them and the reds that perhaps makes them seem more prevalent than this shot shows them to actually be.

Either way, I will continue keeping this in mind and hopefully things will even out a bit more to your liking. Please keep the feedback coming, it is most appreciated.

Cheers

You have a fine system to keep track of team colors.
No need to consider my suggestion.

Lafayette (LA) Bulls Specs

The Bulls were but one of a host of clubs that have come out of Lafayette LA over they years. They went by this particular nickname from 1948 thru 1953 whilst a member of the Evangeline League, capturing the title in 1950. They would win it again in the league's final 1955 season as the Oilers, an affiliate in the Cubs' farm system. Al "Zeke" Zarilla and, three decades on for one of the final iterations of the club, Jack Clark are its most famous alumni.

As a teenager living in New Orleans in the 1950s, the Evangeline League was one of the leagues I would follow in the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Loved that league.

Baton Rouge Red Sticks, Monroe Sports, New Iberia Pelicans, Crowley Millers, Abbeville Athletics, Houma Indians, Alexandria Aces and Hammond Berries were teams in that Class D league.

This was in the Golden Age of Baseball... pre-1955.
The minor league teams actually tried to win games and were not just to develop players like today... teams in contention for the the playoffs would go out and purchase players from higher leagues for the stretch drive. Team were composed of 50% career minor-league players (sometimes ex-MLB players) and perhaps 50% developmental rookies supplied by the Major League teams.

In general, TV and air conditioning killed the minors.

Yep, I really miss the old minor leagues prior to 1955.

You'll see iterations of a few more coming from that group through at some point EC.

I barely follow the modern game, and being from / growing up in Australia I obviously have no such background nor stories to share, obviously. I wish I did. I haven't even seen a live MLB game!

No idea what it is about the minors that fascinates me. But, like the Negro Leagues, fascinate me they do - as is patently clear from this little exercise and my various leagues.

I'd like to have a go doing a totally reimagined set of MLB logos at some point, but I need a bigger toolkit than I have at present.

Thanks for sharing.

Hoquiam (WA) Loggers Specs

Back across to the very north-west of the country for my take on the Loggers out of Hoquiam WA. This club was around on-and-off from just after the turn of the century until just before WW2, being known initially as the "Perfect Gentleman" (look for the inked Easter Egg) but changing their moniker with great frequency as they bounced between various leagues of that region and era.

Memphis (TN) Blues Specs

For whatever reason, I find it much easier to come up with the logos from scratch than to derive the accompanying uniforms from them. Which means I have a backlog of 20-25 logos at any given point in time. So that this number doesn't continue to grow I want to try and do a flurry of unis, which might explain why this thread is busier than usual for a few days.

Let's start with the favourite of any I have done so far, both in a creative and technical sense - all the musical notation was tricky indeed to get just right. I refer to the Blues out of Memphis TN, one of those clubs whose awesome nomenclature makes them seem more historically prominent than they actually ever were.

The Blues existed for just 9 seasons spanning 1968-76, with stints in the Texas (?) and International Leagues over that period, winning the former in '69 and making the playoffs in both numerous times. Steve Renko pitched a no-no for them in their inaugural year and they had plenty of recognisable alums including Gary Carter, while Roy Sievers managed them in their inaugural campaign.

Bowling Green (KY) Barons Specs

We finish off today's triple treat with a quick northeasterly dash of roughly 300 miles for a look at the Barons out of Bowling Green KY. Not a lot of info readily at hand for this ephemeral franchise that was only around for a few pre-WW2 years as a member of the KITTY League, winning it in 1939, the club's very first year of its existence.

Evansville (IN) Triplets Specs

Indiana our next stop to tackle the good old Triplets out of Evansville. There had been a few clubs in Evansville previously, but I'd say for most it is the expansion version that came into being in 1970 that is the version of this franchise that most readily comes to mind. The club entered the AAA comp as Minnesota's affiliate and stayed there - eventually becoming part of the Tigers' farm system from 1974-84 - until 1985, when it was sold and moved to Nashville as the Sounds. During that stretch they won the American Association title three times: in 1972, '75 and '79, with the 1975 club also winning the Junior World Series Championship. Of their many notable alumni are included Bert Blyleven, Kirk Gibson, Jack Morris and Managers Jim Leyland and Early Wynn.
