The Miners out of Madisonville KY first appeared on the baseball radar in the middle of WWI, although there was a team in the city for one season just before the turn of the century. That 1916 season saw them in the KITTY League, where they would return in 1922 when the league was reopened but once again for just the single season.

The end of the Second World War ushered in the club's most fruitful era, with them back in the KITTY from 1946 thru 1952 and winning in '49 after unsuccessful playoff runs the two seasons prior and then doing it again in 1952. Two more playoff tilts in the years following were a final flourish, with the club folding for good in 1955 and the league following soon after.

The current summer collegiate league club using the same moniker is unrelated.

In the end, it came down to the fact that I had recently learned how to use Photoshop and the old uni and cap template works with that program. I looked at the uniform maker and getting it all set up just seemed a bit beyond my skillset. As far as I can tell, these work fine in-game - although feel free to correct me if not.

Sticking in the same general vicinity, we head east to take a look at the Buccaneers out of Rocky Mount NC. One of the longer-lasting clubs we've encountered so far spanning 1909-80, the Buccos had an assortment of nicknames over that time from which to choose, including the Railroaders, Tar Heels and Leafs, the last of which covered a three-decade span on-and-off between the 1940s and '70s.

This franchise was an affiliate of numerous MLB clubs, most notably the Tigers from 1965 thru 1972, and played in a bunch of competitions, with most time spent in the Carolina League. Of its many well-known alumni are included Jim Thorpe, HoFers Heinie Manush and Tony Perez, along with Jim Leyland, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Thomson and Lee May - quite the pedigree indeed.

A quick stop in the Lone Star State to take a look at the Cats out of Ballinger, a shortlived Longhorn League franchise that existed from 1947 (winning the title) thru '50 and was a Reds affiliate in '48. There was a Ballinger Browns club affiliated with St. Louis in the 1930s but little info about it survives, or can at least be unearthed easily.

As with Madisonville, the Cats name has been recycled by an unrelated summer collegiate league club in Ballinger.

Teams have been representing the Quad Cities area of Illinois since before the turn of the 19th century, although the truly direct lineage of the Plowboys out of Moline only goes back to 1914 and runs in interrupted fashion thru 1948. By that time, they were known as the A's and an affiliate of the Philly club, and had won four championships across the various leagues in which they had participated. Long-term Reds exec Warren Giles was briefly the President of this club, which also had a bunch of alumni make it to the bigs.

A long trek across to the beautiful Cascades region of the northwest now, to tackle the Gophers out of Chehalis WA. Another fleeting visitor to the minor league landscape, this club existed for just three seasons from 1910-12 and had a different moniker each one of them - the one I have gone with, the Gophers, the Loggers, and finally the Proteges - who won the 1912 Washington State League. This proved the final season for both league and club. Fielder Jones was a member of the 1910 Gophers.

Over to Kentucky now for my very un-genteel take on the Hustlers out of Winchester, who played in the state's Bluegrass League for all five years it existed, 1908-12.

The second of those was memorable not just for the Championship it brought to Winchester, but for Fred Toney's 17-inning no-hitter against Lexington, the longest in organized baseball. Fred went on to spend a while in the bigs, one of a handful of Hustlers alumni to do so.
