Bakersfield (CA) Badgers Specs

The Badgers club out of Bakersfield CA was the progenitor in a long line that included Boosters, Bears, Outlaws, a couple sets of Dodgers and finally the Blaze, with whom I'm sure most of you are familiar, which shut up shop in 2016. That lineage includes many a well-known MLB player, including three HoFers: Pedro Martinez, Mike Piazza and Don "Black & Decker" Sutton.

This logo took a couple goes - I am a self-confessed font nerd and the first option waned on me with each subsequent look. I think it was worth the extra effort and that these came out pretty nice. Certainly an improvement on the first pass, at any rate.

Mount Vernon (IL) Kings Specs

At first glance, the Kings out of Mount Vernon IL look like a minor-league mainstay, with the club making its first appearance in the 1910 Southern Illinois League and bowing out after the 1954 KITTY League season. Sadly, on deeper delving one notes that they disappeared from 1911 to 1946. They had a few alumni reach the Show, but none of them made much of a ripple in the fabric of history.

I couldn't see any other colour than royal purple for these guys, but then I stumbled onto the highlight neon yellow and my childish brain took over. Liked that colour so much I actually made some alts with it featuring predominant as well, which are included in the zip and added separately here.

Helena (AR) Seaporters Specs

I thought the same guy who sold Greenland to the Danish might have been in charge of marketing for these guys - my limited knowledge of the geography of Arkansas may have had something to do with that, as I didn't really know of any "seaports" in that region. Anyway, Helena is smack bang on the west bank of the Mississippi River, so what the heck do I know?

More now than when I started work on these guys, that's for sure, including:
  • Helena played an integral part in the lives of both musician Conway Twitty and former Expos and Mets MLBer Ellis Valentine;
  • In the 1930s, Helena was known as the "Blues Capital of the Delta" and regularly played host to some of the genre's biggest names;
  • Helena is just 90 minutes' drive from Memphis, but I reckon the paddleboat ride would be a lot more fun.

With regard to the Seaporters, they descended from a club called the Hellions that played in the Arkansas State League in the late 1900s, themselves featuring in the Cotton States League from 1935 thru '49.

A learning day is a good day indeed. It's wet and miserable here in Sydney and my dodgy back is playing up, so you get a super special Saturday 2-for-1 deal included with your subscription.

Love the simplicity of your designs.
You really pick good color combinations.
And you do your research, too... when logos are based on georgraphy, history and culture, it don't get any better than that.

That Helena Seaporters logo is so beautiful and serene.

Also really like the Sweetwater Swatters... great nickname.

Love the vivid colors of the Vernon Tigers and the uniforms designs... the Black and Orange really stand out.

Thanks EC, that means a lot to me. As much as you can't see a lot of the detail in-game, I still think of these as little works of art or even (being a bit of a music nut as well) baseball-related album sleeves and put a few little "Easter Eggs" throughout them when I can, like the "AR" on the underwing of the seaplane in the Helena one (probably invisible at 300px). I am enjoying the creation of them so much and I'm glad to hear they resonate with you and manage to reflect the high level of thought and love that goes into each.

Enjoy your weekend!

Paris (IL) Lakers Specs

Got a bit of an aquatic theme going apparently, with our next project the Lakers out of Paris IL. The city briefly played host to the Parisians club, but went franchise free between 1908 and 1950, when the Lakers club was formed, named for the location of its home field in Twin Lakes Park. (That ballpark, Laker Stadium, still stands in the same spot today.)

The Lakers played in the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League from '50 thru '55 before switching to the newly-founded Midwest League in '56 (and winning the inaugural Championship). Sadly, while that league survives to the present day, the Lakers organisation didn't make it into the 1960s.

Lincoln (NE) Links Specs

I realised almost immediately upon starting this thread that I'd misnamed it and actually meant to call it Luckymann's Exercises in Uniformity. But then, before I could go bother my poor man kq76 to get yet another thread title changed, I realised I kinda liked this accidental misnomer because it speaks to my learning curve with this and also what I am picking up along the way about each franchise and their respective locale. I have no doubt it is in fact I who is learning the most from the little blurbs and the research done for each, little surprise I guess given the fact that I am from Sydney, Australia and have spent just 1 month out of my 55 years on Earth in your country!

Case in point - I never knew how far either north nor west Nebraska is. I always thought it a so-called border state (when, of course, it wasn't even a state during the Civil War) that was underneath Kansas in the vicinity of Oklahoma / Arkansas / Mississippi and the like.

Anyway, the Links out of Lincoln are the longest-lived iteration of a club that existed on-and-off from 1906 thru 1961 in a number of different leagues and as an affiliate of various MLB clubs. Nellie Fox played for them while they were an A's farm club, while Dick "Dr Strangeglove" Stuart whacked 66 homers for them in 1956 when they were a Pirates affiliate known as the Chiefs.

The logo itself has a few little flourishes, including the six 5-pointed stars, representing Lincoln's age (56) when he died, and the dual colourways of brown-and-white and, of course, red-white-blue. I'm particularly fond of this one - Lincoln is a hero of mine and I think I did him justice in my own little way with it.

Good job on these. If I could make a few of suggestions regarding your file naming?
  • Put underscores _ in between words
  • There is no need to put "home" on the home sets as OOTP automatically assigns these as the home uniforms.
  • (This one is personal preference) Keep filenames all lowercase. jerseys_lincoln_links for example.
  • Append color codes to the end of the primary logo. For example - lincoln_links_210a04_b40028.
  • And name the smaller logo lincoln_links_small.

I feel that these suggestions would make it easier for the end user (especially one new to incorporating uniforms) to incorporate straight into OOTP without having to rename files.

Oh - thanks for using the pre-23 format.

Appreciate the feedback and will incorporate some of the suggestions from here on in.

Lamesa (TX) Lobos Specs

It seems we've gone from an aquatic theme straight into one involving LL clubs, with the Lobos out of Lamesa TX our next contestant.

The peak Lobos seasons bookended WW2 in the West Texas-New Mexico League from that era, with a flirtation representing both Winters and Ballinger as a joint concern in the 1953 Longhorn League before disappearing for good.

The learning aspect of this endeavour isn't limited to the factual. it also includes me trying to expand and improve upon my heretofore limited skillset with the various programs I use. In this one, given the fittingly minimalism of the logo design, I wanted to try a subtle effect known as "diffuse glow" to give the overall graphic the ethereal look and feel of a misty, cloudy full moon night in keeping with the lupine thematic. I think it turned out OK.

North Platte (TN) Buffalos Specs

Another Nebraskan club (go Huskers!) up to the plate now with the Buffalos out of North Platte. The Buffalos moniker was their earliest one, applied during a brief sojourn in the Nebraska State League between 1929 and '32. After a long hiatus, they returned as a Cleveland affiliate named the Indians from 1956 until the league folded for good in 1959, winning it in 1958.

This one was a bit of a happy accident, really, as I inadvertently chose the Buffalos (hahahahahaha I tried to type the three initials of the North Platte Buffalos but of course, they are verboten on here and I just got asterisks...) whereas I actually needed a team from Kentucky or thereabouts. All's well that ends well, as I found them a home all the same and love this logo lots. Hope some of you guys do, too.
