2021 MLB Standard Game Totals / Modifiers
When you start a new 2021 game, the league totals are pre-set to give a slash line of (give or take- I am not in front of the game right now) .252/.325/.421 with specific totals modifiers for each stat. If you click the button to restore defaults, the totals are changed to give an expected slash line of .236/.318/.393 with all totals modifiers set to 1.000. For what it is worth, the latter are what are pre-set when you create a fictional league based on 2021 settings.
Which settings are actually the intended 2021MLB settings. Using the pre-set (at least with all parks neutralized, as I do) seems to consistently give unsatisfactory individual player results beyond even what the higher slash baselines would predict. For example, over a stretch of six sims, Luis Arraez had seasons where he hit .372, .380, and .393 and Jeff McNeil had two seasons over .365. On the other hand, through 15 or so sims I have never seen Gerrit Cole with an ERA under 3.60. I would also note that the gap between bullpen ERA and starter ERA is consistently larger than the current real-life delta (for the A.L. in my last sim, 4.02 vs 4.96; Cole was at 5.10). Maybe this has to do with more starters being pulled before the third time through the order in now in real-life, but the innings pitched per start in the sims donÂ’t seem to be out of step with the actual score. Another possibility is that greater usage is both exposing more relievers as hitters see them more frequently and leading to a diminution of pitch quality over the season as appearances and innings increase. Perhaps the boost given to reliever Stuff is too great, or should be accompanied by a corresponding Control decrease.
As always, my appreciation in advance for any informed feedback.
