9/11 Yankees, Mets, NYC minors

I made these Yankee unis for my PCL 2020 based on logos/wordmarks by SFG58 on the sportslogos.net forums, and as I thought about sharing them in that thread I realized, given the calendar, they might be of more general interest on their own.

When I played High Heat Baseball 2001 I used this shoulder patch on my Yankee unis and I was glad to find it again, 19 years later. I'm making NYPD/NYFD caps too, because those have been worn by various NY sports teams at ceremonies over the years.

Anyway, here comes the Yankees... I'll include the basic stuff everyone already has, just in case you like these colors better and want all the parts to match.

Meet the Mets

I don't even have the Mets in my PCL 2020 setup but I haven't updated my old Mets set in a long time. The color looks a little cartoony when you look at the graphics, but it looks good in the game (on my display anyway) and IMO closer to real-life caps and such, a cross between Dodger blue (005a9c) and the online graphics/what SFG58 uses (002d72). It's a blue from an older Mets graphic on sportslogos.

Also, the FDNY logo lost a lot of detail, so I also did one with the plain FDNY script.

Brooklyn Bagels

I love the Cyclones, their ballpark is perfect and it's the most fun I've ever had in a ballpark. But there are quite a few of their sets floating around, and I never found one for their special "Bagel Night" jerseys. So, here we go. The only ones they wore had brown short sleeves, and those looked odd so I made them vests.
[I don't know why some of these logos look so big here, they're all 150x150]

Thanks Eugene, I do look at your requests, they're always interesting ideas but I am only good at cutting/pasting/recoloring... my ideas have to match the logos and scripts I can find!

The Brooklyn art seems to have come from a young Pratt Institute graduate named Olivia Pasquarelli that worked for the Cyclones; I got the best versions of the logos from her page at the school. She's not listed on the team website any more so I wonder if she's one of the many thousands of minor league employees/players laid off this year.

Boy, you still do very nice work technically... and your creations are well-designed... your graphics are clean and have good contrast and use of colors... I would have thought you were using Photoshop.

I understand your limitations... that's me, too... I have to use the original image and its colors to do a logo... can't change colors.

I am going to try to learn a simple graphics program so I can do my own graphics... some have suggested Gimp doesn't have a long learning curve.

I need a software the is simple and easy to understand and use.

EC is not the sharpest tool in the woodshed when it comes to computer use.

What software do you use to cut/paste/recolor?

Thanks again! I use Paint Shop Pro and have since it was free in the days of High Heat Baseball 2001! I forget what the current version is but I think I upgraded last year when I got my new computer and they had a deal, maybe $60. It's listed as $80 at the moment but you might find some discount if you scrounge, and there's a 30 day trial. I've never used Photoshop, I'm sure it's excellent but I do ok with Paint Shop Pro and really am still learning features and tricks. I've never done a tutorial, so I make many mistakes and I'm sure don't use a lot of automation tools that I could use.

I've thought semi-seriously about taking some digital graphic design classes for those technical skills. Too many things I want to learn and too little time I'm happy with my cutting and pasting, so much that I am not playing much these days

Staten Island Baby Bombers

While digging around here, I saw a post where someone suggested the "Baby Bombers" as a mascot for the Yankees' Staten Island affiliate, so that's what I'll try here.

By the time v.22 comes out, unfortunately, these will be useless, as Staten Island is one of the 40+ teams (and the NYPL is one of the four leagues) that Manfred and the cartel will be eliminating. I was lucky enough to make quick baseball trips to NY for two years in a row with frequent flyer miles, and managed to time Staten Island and Brooklyn in the same long weekend. The ferry is (famously) free from Manhattan, and as of last summer they had just finished the lovely waterfront walkway to the ballpark. So, just hang a right as you exit the ferry, walk along past the lonely Staten Island 9/11 Memorial...

and use the waterfront gate to Richmond County Bank Ballpark. It's a fun jaunt even if you don't go to a game and just ride the ferry over to walk around and look back at Manhattan and watch the ferries, sailboats, and cargo ships pass by. Good job MLB, this should have been one of the best experiences in baseball.

Anyway, here are the Staten Island Baby Bombers:

Thanks for the Stalen Island story.
My wife and I completed a tour of 37 major league ballparks... it took us about 15 years... we also go to minor league parks... wish I had made it to Staten Island and Brooklyn.

Thanks for sharing your graphics and story.

And now everyone's (least) favorite... the Pizza Rats (logs and caps)!

Literally every time a kid under the age of 12 enters the SI Yankees' gift store in the ballpark, the first thing he (almost always) looks for is... Pizza Rats gear!

This was the result of one of those foolish "name the mascot" contests, and thankfully the gang up in the Bronx said "eh, maybe you should affiliate with the Pecos League instead". But the Pizza Rats stuff remains the biggest seller by far for the SI team, to the point they don't stock much of a variety of their regular Yankee persona in their shop.

Anyway, I've always thought the mascot goes well for a NY team in a fun-oriented fictional league, so I'll include Brooklyn/Bronx/New York Pizza Rats stuff too. Use them in good health and bad taste! :P

Lived in Staten Island for 30 years and went to both parks. The highlight of Richmond County Ballpark is the view of the city. Otherwise, pretty unremarkable. MCU Park has nicer views of the field - field level is lower than the playing surface so the game is right in front of you. The Parachute Drop & Coney Island Boardwalk also give the park a nice flair.

If you ever end up anywhere in the neighborhood, Brooklyn really is worth it. It's fantastic.

Don't believe the Baby Bombers logo was used for anything other than merch. Despite not being owned by the Yanks, ownership tries to stay as close to the big team's identity. Perfect example, the Pizza Rats brand you have on here won the fan vote when the team was looking to rebrand. Ownership was all aboard (hence where the logos come from) until the Yankees weighed in and nixed the idea & relegated it to promo status.

Yep, there's only one ballpark in the world with a roller coaster in CF and a beach in RF! They do an amazing job with special events too, I think the first game I ever went to was Grateful Dead Night (who knew there were deadheads in BKN), Boy Scout Night, and at least two other special group/honor things. It was a fabulous mess!

I guess SI has always had marketing/attendance problems, from what I understood they closed off a bunch of parking when they started all that construction around the terminal and the regulars stopped going. It was a little depressing, one game I remember they had two players sitting at a table to give out autographs and no one stopped for any But the location is great and it should have been a major draw for tourists interested in/curious about baseball.

The problem is Staten Island's infamously poor planning. They stopped the trains going directly to the Stadium (now fans have to walk thru the crowded ferry terminal); the Staten Island Wheel became such a money pit it got nixed; and now they are trying to build an outlet mall but cut the parking in half if not more. The neighborhood doesn't help as you have a police precinct & boro hall right there. There's really nothing to keep people in the area before & after games, like Coney Island. Also, the Cyclones stole alotta their fan base as many Staten Islanders trace their roots to that side of the bridge. I can go on for hours tbh.

Funny that you say that, I think the first game I went to at SI they had Mahoning Valley there, and the biggest group of fans was a gaggle of people in Mets and Cyclones gear behind the visitor's clubhouse, apparently rooting for some kid from Brooklyn that was drafted by Cleveland. Sounds like it was less strange than it seemed at the time!
