Vern Geishert 1969
Almost done with our parade of obscure Angels pitchers in the bottomless Brace pit.
Search for color of this 11-game '69 Halos pitcher and you won't find any, though a poor copy of the pitching pose has been out there awhile. Never saw the troubled portrait before. Topps did not shoot Geishert while he was with California, though they did get him after his trade to the Reds with Pedro Borbon and Jim McGlothlin for Alex Johnson and Chico Ruiz, and they put him on a three-player 1970 rookie card. He never pitched for Cincinnati. Ever heard of the infamous deal the Giants made with Cincinnati, giving away George Foster for shortstop Frank Duffy? It wasn't as bad as it seemed. The Giants also got Geishert, who promptly said he'd had enough and quit without even pitching a game for a Giants' farm. |

Ron Kline 1952 (in 1969)
A companion to the earlier shot of Kline with the Braves in '70 - his previous team, the '69 Red Sox. This was presented as a JD McCarthy but while I've seen his work in Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Florida and even New York once I do not think I've seen him at Fenway.
Still, very nice work. |

Ron D. Johnson 1982 (and in 1984)
Very elusive shots of this 22-game big leaguer who had five plate appearances over two weeks with the 1984 Expos and naturally one of them was with George Brace at Wrigley Field.
This bat-on-shoulder image has a history longer than the later-to-be-popular-coach's career. It is, in fact, RE-colorized. Many of Brace's more obscure subjects were literally re-photographed, in black and white, with extreme care and skill, by the Illinois collector and postcard expert Jim Rowe. Those negatives wound up in the hands of an eBay dealer. I managed to get a couple of the scarcer guys and King Photo Shop the 1st (Bob Wong) restored them to their original glory. The batting shot? That was in the Big-Pile-of-Braces, as were the two shots of Ron Johnson as a rookie, at Comiskey, with the 1982 Royals. Last edited by Merkle923; 06-14-2025 at 11:38 PM. |

Fred Johnston 1924
Johnston was a college football star but was signed by Brooklyn and made it into training camp. He later saw action in 1 major league game. He is pictured here in the 3/16/1924 edition of the Brooklyn Eagle

Mike T. Stanton 1975 (in 1985)
Same weird monochroming/re-colorizing Brace-Rowe provenance as the Ron Johnson, here is the elusive Original Mike Stanton (not the three-time World Series winner who pitched in 20 Series games) and not Giancarlo) in his 11-game swan song with the 1985 White Sox.

Fred Manrique 1981 (in 1986)
Yet another Color-Now B&W-Now Color again, gives us a peek at this amazingly well-traveled infielder during his 13-game cameo with the Cardinals in September, 1986.
Manrique broke in as a 19-year old shortstop with the Jays in '81, and had a two-and-a-half year stint as Ozzie Guillen's double play partner with the White Sox ending in 1989. Other than that, his career stops consisted of 69 games with the Twins, 54 with Texas, 24 in Toronto, and 9 each in Montreal and Oakland. That's seven teams in nine years, plus nine more in the minors |

Fred Wood 1884
Not a great photo, but for those that prefer baseball uniformed images here is Wood courtesy of the 5/7/1910 edition of The Hamilton Spectator. The paper was reminiscing about his time in the early 1880s playing for the Hamilton Hop Bitters.

Milo Candini 1943
Candini never made the Yankees, but here he is in Spring Training of 1942, before being dispatched to Washington the following winter.

Earl Naylor 1942
Philadelphia abandoned these "PHILS" road uniforms after 1942, so this is either from Naylor's rookie year or the subsequent Spring Training.
Picture originally posted on Naylor's Find-a-Grave page by Gordon Bret Echols; desaturated and brightened by me |

Walt Terrell 1982
Another Larry Fritsch Cards eBay offering, here we see "Crazy Crab" wandering around the outfield at Rangers camp in the spring of 1982, just a bit before he and Ron Darling were swapped to the Mets for Lee Mazzilli on April Fools' Day (blah-blah, I tweaked the pic, blah-blah-blah…) Last edited by Amazin69; 06-26-2025 at 09:03 PM. |

1884 Bay City, MI
I found this very nice team photo printed in the 2/28/1937 edition of The Bay City Times. Of the pictured individuals, all but 1 appeared in the major leagues at some point in their career. I was especially happy to see George Bignell in a baseball uniform as he is the holder of a long-time baseball record.
The IDs are as follows: Top Row, L-R: Jumbo Davis, E.C. Howard, Jon Morrison, Bill McGunnigle Middle Row, L-R: Jerry Turbidy, Henry Porter, Bill Watkins, Dave Foutz, Jim Cudworth Bottom Row, L-R: Joe Crotty, George Bignell, Charlie Robinson, Joe Strauss |

From 2008, it's the only shot I can find of him in a Pirates uniform
