Look closely; KF871 and KF892 are reversed.

Jim Ollom 1966
Not a lot of this brief Twins' righthander, part of one of the weirder trivia notes in baseball history.
On Opening Day of 1967, there were 17 pitchers named Jim on major league rosters. Six of them: Grant, Kaat, Merritt, Ollom, Perry, and Roland, were with the Minnesota Twins. The Twins had six pitchers named Jim, and only five that weren’t. Topps Thursday Uploads (KF) 906-907 Jim Ollom; 908-909 Lew Olsen (Royals system, RHP); 910-913 Tom O'Malley; 914-915 Tom Morgan (as Angels coach 1981-83); 916-917 Bill Monbouquette; 918-919 Paul Molitor; 920-921 Alex Monchak (as Braves coach 1987); 922-923 Ed Olwine; 924-925 Don Baylor; 926-927 Scott Oliver; 928-929 Bob Owchinko; 930-931 Larry Monroe; 932-935 Bob Montgomery; 936-937 Gregg Olsen; 938-939 Steve Staniland (Cardinals system, RHP); 940-941 John Montague; 942-943 Aurelio Monteagudo; 944-945 Gene Oliver Last edited by Merkle923; 03-10-2017 at 01:34 AM. |

Aurelio Monteagudo 1963
72 appearances over 11 years and one of the most annoying of Career White Whales because while he only appeared with five different teams, he was the property of ten (one organization twice) and might be found in all the uniforms.
Here's one of the Camp/Not Regular Season clubs: the 1972 Brewers. The full list would be A's 1963-1966 (that's only about four uniform styles there), 1966 Astros (known in B&W), 1967 Reds (Opening Day Roster; seen in B&W in new '67 style uni, and in some wide group color shots in '66 unis from spring training), 1967 White Sox (known in a nice Color Brace), 1970 Padres (none known), 1970 Royals (color known), 1972 Brewers (now seen in color), 1972 Padres (none known), 1973 Angels (known in color, McWilliams for Topps); 1974 Phillies (B&W publicity must exist; shown in several newspaper pieces that spring, see below). Monteagudo Reds
Someone sent this to me when I was still very new to this board; do not have wider original and did not show up on Google! It was turned in a nice custom for me among many at one time.

Monteagudo
Another weird trivia note from baseball history. Per Wiki:
There have been three players in major league history named Aurelio (two of whom played for the Detroit Tigers), and all three were killed in car accidents between the ages of 44 and 53. Aurelios Rodriguez, López and Monteagudo. |

Bill Hands won 20 games in 1969
Bill Hands went 111-110 for his eleven year MLB career (1965-1975). He never was an all-star but he had a three year period, 1968-1970 where he averaged about 275 innings pitched per year and his average won-lost record for those years was 18-13. He went 20-14 in 1969, pitching a career high of exactly 300 innings.
Hands would have turned 77 in early May. |

Junior Moore 1976
There's Moore in store for you in today's Vault drop. Here's Junior with his two teams. There's also Jackie (Moore), Donnie (Moore), Barry (Moore), and yet more Tommy (Moore). Also some nice Bob Shaws and Joe Torres for we Mets fans.

Gene Stone 1969
Relax. He is NOT in this photo.
I post this here just to illustrate that there will always remain some white whales. The elusive 1969 Phillies' first baseman only spent six weeks not with their Reading affiliate in the AA Eastern League. Yet it was during that span that Reading took its team picture, which I had never seen until this week. No Stone. So we don't have anything from the only option for a possible upgrade from the tiny Philly team picture in which he's sitting next to the trainer or the game action photo, presumably also from Reading. It is still tantalizing to me that there was a "Stone, Gene" file at Topps which showed only more shots of Ron Stone. As a consolation prize there are two future major league managers in this picture: the late John Vukovich (1986 Cubs, 1988 Phils) and Carl "Stump" Merrill (1990-1991 Yankees, and rather amazingly, just four Yankees' managers ago), and a few other curious names, like Tug McGraw's catcher brother Hank and Dick Allen's brother Ron. Gene Stone 1969
Don't know whether this Gene Stone photo is the game action photo to which Merkle was referring. When I purchased it some twenty years ago or so, I was informed that it was a Jim Rowe postcard and that it showed Stone in a Reading uniform.

That's the one. Without that and the '69 Philly team photo we wouldn't even have a hint what he looked like. There isn't even a Brace of Stone.

Nelson Briles - Royals
Sometimes googling the same missing players in one's list deals results. Imagine my surprise when a routine search on Nelson Briles as a Royal came back with two great Doug McWilliams pics.
Good article as well! http://baseballhall.org/discover/car...les-topps-card And another thanks for Merkle for scanning his SSPC way back when... http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...es#post4092400 |
