Good hitter, but as a rule, DHs don't amaze me.

Plus, I think Ortiz's decline, while not imminent, will be hard and fast.

I don't think they wanted to release him. There defanitely was some reasoning behind it (probably salary). But I remember thinking that when he was in Minnesota that he was going to be a very good player.

Ryan's first legit blow save of the year (he didn't allow a baserunner in the other one) - such stuff happens. Still it would have been nice to take a five game lead.

It was a salary dump -- he was arb eligible, and they didn't want to pay the arb award.

Did anyone SEE "today's" game? I only "saw" it on GAMEDAY.

I saw the very end. Ortiz wasn't all that good in Minny, nobody knew he would break out with the sox.

Including the Sox, who played Jermey Giambi over him for the first half of 2003.

But people in the "baseball world" defanitely predicted bigger things from him. Maybe not what he has accomplished with the Sox, but he was defanitely going to be a good player.

Was it a good pitch? One of those BJ Ryan sweeping, barely can be seen FBs? Or, was it a bit of a straighliner?

Tizzle has hit lefties better than in the past, but I can't remember him ever hitting a lefty as good as Ryan. I think he was 1 for something before this game, and another 1 for something against RJ.

He had an OPS+ of 122 in his last year with Minny. That's good enough to consider it not sucking, as the ever-eloquent chj put it, but not good enough to command a disgustingly large arb number.

It was a tough at-bat, Ortiz fouled off some good pitches. The pitch in question was right down the middle and about stomach high – easy pickings but Ortiz had a great at bat. Maybe it was wishful thinking, but I thought it would be off the monster at first and then I thought the CF would get it. But it got out with plenty of room to spare.

I do have to stay I was pretty surprised given that Ryan usually kills lefties and Ortiz usually doesn't hit lefties well. Not heartbroken or anything.
