This isn't specific to OOTP, only to being able to incorporate some recent and excellent additions to mods i.e. thomamon's Player Ranker and Anderson's Utilities - perhaps I should be posting in Mods, but here I am.

thomamon or Comedian2004: I haven't been able to install .net framwork without wreaking havoc on my PC. I'm using XP and trying to update it through Windows Update channels, but invariably once I have .net framework installed the anti virus program flares up, there are programs that suddenly indicate they are not launching or an odd .exe or .dll file cannot be found.

I've established a restore point where everything works fine and have returned to whenever the equilibrium has been tilted out of whack, but I'm at a loss at this point as to what specific issues/areas I should be looking at as potential causes of the incompatiblity. I really want to be able to utilize these programs, but at this juncture I need a bit of a nudge in the right direction.

Do you think you can lend any thoughts as to why I'm having this problem?

Really? Thanks for the heads-up. I was going to download it, but decided to wait for a little bit. It's a good thing I didn't go on and do it. I hope there's a solution to this, the player ranker looks really good.

i've been having issues as well, althugh more with getting XP to reconize that the version of NET that they need to work is installed on the machine. I'll wait to see what will resolve this issue

Being a computer tech, I have yet to see any machines having any problems installing the framework. Installing it or after effects.

Let's get some ground work done here first.

You have XP, home or professional?

What programs are you having trouble with after you install the framework? You mentioned anti-virus. Which one and what version? What other problems are you having?

Do you have all of the latest updates from Microsoft before installing the framework?

Have you tried to download the framework and installing it from running it instead of using the Windows Update?

And have you disabled the anti-virus when installing the framework?

Just read an article how having your Anti-virus software and/or Firewall software on when installing the framework can cause the framework not to work properly. It mentioned getting errors during the installation, and if you ignore the errors, you can have problems later on.

Once again, I suggest that you disable the anti-virus software and the firewall software during the installation and then turn it back on when done and see if that helps.

More and more programs are being written to take advantage of the .net framework, so it is something you will have to deal with further down the line anyhow.

First and foremost, these are great programs. I want them. I don't want to create any stir among the bushes that you shouldn't get the program or go through the motions of securing .net framework if you don't have it already. Just thought I'd ask the question publicly because I might get some help and there might be others who need some assistance working out their own PC issues as well. It's good good stuff. Just want to do what it takes on my end to make it happen. On that note:

The antivirus has failed in two attempts, specifically the firewall aspect and indicates LOW protection for internet use. Windows Security Center also makes mention that my Panda Titanium 2005 has shut off its automatic protection. I don't run both Panda and Windows firewalls. Read too many places that more than one firewall can create difficulties.

I'll start documenting them when I have the time to go through the process again, but at least in two cases they were simple startup issues that I have since removed, e.g. old ATI Multimedia files from a previous card that don't have any easy uninstall, dwwin: a tool aspect of a reporting tool supposedly used by Dr.Watson to collect and send info. On the last occasion, events required that I reinstall the Panda software to continue and it would not successfully reinstall until I ran two different Registry cleaners AND removed .net framework from the system.

In at least one other trial the Explorer program itself would not load so that any desktop icon I clicked or double-clicked on would result in nothing, nada. Reboot after reboot, anti-virus de-activated, nothing. Finally, removed the .net framework. Voila. Back in action. Was looking like correlation if not cause and effect, but from my knowledge base still speculation at best.

No. Thought about it, looked, but remember being unsure which file or bundle of files to grab. That's an idea.

Yes. Didn't matter. Seems they're intertwined somehow, just can't say how.

and.....thanks for taking this time to try to assist me/us. As much as I'd rather you were able to devote all your time to further enhancing your program, I want even more to be able to utilize it. Appreciate your help.

Thanks. I'll give it another go now that the AV program is back fully functional and working properly. Maybe something went wrong with it long before my early attempts with .net framework.

If you can't get the .net framework installed easily, then take a look at Mono, the open-source alternative.

I have XP Pro here and also running the cute little Panda bear software. I let it launch and then right click on it to disable the realtime protection. It was not letting me run some applications, like Soldier of Fortune II. It also would at times start taking up 95 percent of the CPU. It still gives me the mail protection and the surfin protection.

I use the microsoft firewall.
