Interesting Test (concerning Barry Bonds and the Giants)

Today Barry basically said he doesn't want to play this year. I saw the interview and to me it looked like he was frustrated and overwhelmed with all that is happening. Believe me, I am not saying he hasn't brought most of it on himself and this is certainly not another bash/defend Barry post.

So a friend and I were talking (he is a cubs fan) and said wouldn't it be funny if he does miss the whole year and they win it all. Sure it would be funny, but as a Giants fan I would be ecstatic regardless of whether Barry played or not.

Simply this is nothing more then a "how do they do with out him" question using OOTP and the latest toadfreak rosters (nice work BTW)

So I simmed 5 seasons with him out the whole year and another 5 with him missing just the first month. (certainly not scientific - but interesting none the less)

That's nothing compared to Season 5.

so Barry didn't make a difference - he had monster numbers, but still no titles for the Giants

I wish he'd made that decision back when he first started using steroids. And kept making it.

Damn, I hope Barry comes back soon so the Jays can win it two years from now.

Umm . . . why would he start using steroids and then decide to stop playing? Bulking up for his retirement?

Dola, if someone had DMB, I'd be interested in a sim for the Giants sans bonds- I predict a 74 win team at best.

I have DMB9 with the projection disk for 2005. I will play out the season scenarios tomorrow 5 with and 5 without to see what DMB thinks will happen

I don't forgive Barry. I had to do a bailout trade with him today before anyone really found out the news on my Fantasy Baseball League.

Didn't get really good value, but it will be better than what Barry does this year.

Given that he's out at least till the all-star break, do you think he'll come back at all? I think he wants to hit #756. After that, he's done.

Thanks - though if you have the time - a longer test would be great.

How about 20 seasons without him and with him and maybe another 20 with him from the Allstar break. That may take me some time but I have already started (at work). I'll let you know the results as soon as they are compiled

Just finsihed the first season (without him) and the Giants were 77-85 in 4th place 9 games out (LA won the division with a 86-76 record).

Barry was a good ballplayer when he first came up, and would have been for his entire career had he choose the proper path. There is no way anyone can tell me he didnt know he was using performance enhancing drugs, hes not that stupid. So now he is labeled a "cheater" and I think obviously he is a "liar", and I would like to see everyone stop talking about him as he does not deserve all the attention.

"I wish that all the folks who keep waxing about baseball that used to be understood that baseball has never been better."

Baseball has never been sadder except perhaps during the whitesox scandal in 1919. If these guys would just come out and say, "Yes, I did it, it was a poor choice and it wont happen again.", we could all move on. I am personally tired of hearing about steroids and want to hear about baseball.

What is your criteria for "better"? Attendance? Entertainment? Other?

I wish those who have no historical perspective could understand that baseball has never been this bad since 1919.
