What to do if Injured for the Season...

My young 3B prospect tore a back muscle running the bases in May of my first season and is out for the season. What do I do with him? I placed him on the 60 Day DL, but the days have run out and now he's just over there taking up space. Do I just leave him there? Should I drop him from the 40 man roster, or does placing him on the DL free up a spot anyway?

Once he goes on the 60 day DL, he's off the 40 man roster. When he is fully healed, you will have to put him back on the 40 man. It's possible that he can still be injured when you start Spring Training next year. That's OK, you can still train him and he'll be ready for the start of the next year.

You don't have to limit a guy to the number of days of the DL. You can leave a guy on the DL all season if you want, whether it's 15-day or 60-day.

Why do I get the feeling this question is caused by that F***ing MVP Baseball game which makes the DLs a MAXIMUM? Anyway, as was said here, you can leave guys on the DL as long as you want. Watch out though, I have noticed some players (usually early to mid 30s) retire if they're left on the DL much longer than they should have been.

I've also noticed some anecdotal evidence that long stays on the DL can cause hits to the player's talent levels.

The difference between the 15 day and 60 day is the former only removes a guy from the active roster, while the latter removes him from both the active and 40 man. Otherwise you can leave a guy on or take a guy off when the time passes. I have a superstition about the 60 man - someone once posted that their 60 day DL guy got drafted in the Rule 5. As much as I laughed at his misfortune I usually don't use the 60 to avoid any programming glitches.

FREE THE BUNDY FIVE!!! BRING BACK THE DL FOR MINOR LEAGUERS!!! FREE THE BUNDY FIVE!!!!

At least you can take a guy off and put him right back on the 15-day DL if he's still hurt.

I rarely use the 60-day DL. I don't use the Rule 5 draft or anything. I only put someone on it if I really need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster or something.

I do wish you could move guys from the 15-day to the 60-day, though.

I will use the 60-day DL if it's a season-ending injury on a player who would be eligible for abritration or free agency otherwise. That's about it, though.

Well, technically, it is right that they'd be rule 5 eligible if you don't move them back off the 60 day DL. At the end of the year in MLB before the Rule 5 draft, you have to re-instate your players off the 60 day DL and back onto your 40 man roster if you want to keep them on your 40. That's one thing that hindered the Orioles while keeping Albert Belle around for all those years until his contract ended. Every winter he'd take up a spot on the 40 man roster that could have been used instead to protect a prospect from the Rule 5 draft but since he had to be re-instated from the 40 man roster from the 60 Day DL just to be re-assigned there after the draft during spring training it prevented 1 prospect a year from being protected.
