White Sox announcers

I love listening to them
Not really the classic voices you are used to, but they are very excited about the game each and every play.
Only thing I can think of that comes close is South American soccer announcers.

I am talking about the radio guys. The guys on WGN are pretty good too. Light years ahead of the Cubs crew which I would rank among the worst I have ever heard.
I expect around early June I will start my thread about how WGN runs the worse baseball telecast I have ever seen.

But anyways, if you are going to get paid to act stupid. Then do it with style

John Rooney and Ed Farmer, the ESPN 1000 guys who do ChiSox radio are pretty solid, I enjoy listening to them quite a bit. I'm not a Cubs fan, mind you, but I don't think Pat Hughes is all that bad -- in fact, I'm inclined to say Hughes is pretty good on WGN Radio. Ron Santo isn't good (in fact, he borders on being awful), but I like him. I can't say why, but there is something pleasant about catching the Cubs on radio. Weird, I know. It certainly beats the Cubs TV guys. Dreadful.

Now, I caught the White Sox game on WGN today -- watched it in its entirety, first time I've done that since I was much younger -- and I realized that there is something endearing about Hawk Harrelson. Yes, the patented home-run call is [really, really, REALLY] annoying, few people will dispute that. But, c'mon, "Hawkspeak" is pretty unique, you know it is, and he has a pleasant voice. Dixie-defined. In today's broadcast he drawled out "ducks on the pond", "in the catbird seat", and a few other old-time broadcasting trademarks that died a few decades ago. Coming from anyone else they'd be dreadful, but Harrelson has the personality (a total homer, over-the-top) and the voice to make them sound appropriate in today's game. I appreciated it. I won't ever care for the automatic "put it on the board, Yessssss!" dreck or "He gone!", but I discovered today that I otherwise enjoy listening to Hawk Harrelson. In my constant search to find baseball broadcasters who are different, Harrelson is anything but vanilla. I've gone over to the dark side.

As a Cub fan I'd've loved to have had a Hughes/Stone team, but didn't happen. Santo in the picture with SL's Mike Shannon for some of the worst I've ever heard (Santo doesn't pay attention, and Shannon just is so arrogant and gets basic facts wrong). I think I'd like Hawk better if they took away DJ and let Hawk do his thing solo. DJ is just too sedate and bland-adds nothing.

I like Hughes, Santo is funny in old person with alzheimer's kind of way. He sometimes gets on a tangant about what pudding was served during the lunch he had, and sometimes that's funny. As a color guy, he sucks. Farmer and Rooney sounds like they have fun in booth together and it helps make the broadcast zoom by. I don't have an opinion on Kasper/Brenly yet in the TV booth for the Cubs, but anything is better that Chip "Rangers lead the league in blown slaves" Carey. As for Hawk And DJ, I'll use a phrase that Hawk likes to use a lot, "No".

So basically, he's a poor man's Harry Caray.

Personally, I love listening to White Sox radio. Ed Farmer cracks me up.

On opening day, Ed Farmer spent a large poriton of airtime calling out ESPN's Steve Phillips (who had picked the Sox to finish "third or fourth" in the AL Central, despite not having watched an inning of a Sox ST game).

As far as TV goes, I enjoy Hawk - he's become synonymous with White Sox baseball, for better or worse. Darrin Jackson is alright, but I wish Tom Paciorek was still in the booth.

Hawk Harrelson is far and away the most annoying announcer in the world if your team is playing the Sox. Most obnoxious homer of all time.

And I liked Jimmy Piersall when he was there.

I think John Rooney is the best radio announcer in baseball. I wish ESPN would let him do more than just a first-round series for the playoffs each year.

I was listening to the Cubs radio broadcast during that big comeback the Cardinals had in Chicago. Santo got so pissed that he didn't even speak for almost 3 innings, it was basically a one-man booth for the last hour of the game. As far as Shannon goes, he doesn't bother me. Probably more because I have become used to him than anything else.

I like Harrelson solely because he doesn't say "Russ Gload".

Annoying baseball announcers are par for the course. I actually liked listening to the White Sox opening day game against Cleveland. I was looking forward to some stupid nickname for Pierzynski.

I like Mike, but that is, like you, probably because I'm used to him (and, more importantly, I am a Cardinals fan in a family of way-back Cardinals fans from Missouri...the kind of people that Shannon would appeal to most*)

Is that one of the White Sox radio people?
I never did catch their names. I just loved listening to them when they came back against Cleveland yesterday.

Yeah, Rooney is the PBP man, Farmer's the comedian, although they both have a pretty dry sense of humor.

The scary thing about Harrelson is that he's really toned it down over the last few years...I've heard that Reinsdorf has him on a fairly short leash, especially when it comes to criticizing the Sox. I think that explains all the times when Harrelson is silent..."If you can't say something nice..."

I like Harrelson to a point, but I'm absolutely tired of his once-a-game tirade against Billy Beane. I wonder if he'll shut up when the A's have a better record than the White Sox for the 5th straight season.

The Whitesox WGN swines are so bad most people simply put the Tele on Mute. They are legendary in their reputations as the worst crap ever to be broadcasted. The Good Guys crap is so annoying that I even enjoy it when Cleveland beats them. Even Swines have their appeal.

I guess I don't hear the WGN guys enough for it to be annoying. As a novelty, it's entertaining.

Sigh...

Let's not let bias get in the way mmmkay?

Even though I am a White Sox fan, I still think at least "Hawk" is one of the best play by play guys out there. He is pretty original, and he has a pretty good sense of humor. I don't think DJ is a good partner for him. I miss "Wimpy"
