Help with editing LahmanDB
I am trying to create a 2005 roster set by adding 2005 entries into the LahmanDB, but using projected statistics. I was able to do this easily for the pitchers by just adding the entries into the CSV file. However, the batting file is giving me problems because it is already too large to open in Excel and I do not own Access. So, basically, I am asking if there is another way to open/edit the CSV file that I am not aware of. Any help/suggestions on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated.

You can edit it in notepad or any other text base editor. Not as user friendly, of course, but it will work as long as you are careful.

Notepad is what I'm using, but like BravesSince66 says, you have to be careful, since you won't find your errors until you run the DB.

OK, what I will probably do is create the entries in a seperate excel file and then copy + paste everything over to notepad once I am done. That should minimize most error risk, I would think. Thanks guys!

I believe the DB is sorted by year (ascending). In the past, I've opened the file in notepad, deleted a lot of the "top" rows, saved it, and then opened it in Excel.

Nope, the file I have is sorted by the lahmanID. It would be nice if it was the way you mentioned. |

Maybe it was Ankit's or another custom DB. I don't remember now. |

Yea, I'm pretty sure at least one of the edited databases are like that. |

What I do when I work on Lahman is divide it up into two or three files in notepad, then sort each file how I want in Excel. I then use Excel to recombine the files in the way I want, still divided up, and save as separate files again.
For instance, let's say the batting stats are sorted by year, and you want them sorted by name. In notepad, divide the batting file into three separate files by cutting in pasting. Then open each one in Excel and sort it by name. Then copy, say, A thru J from each into a new Excel spreadsheet, then K thru P, then Q thru Z (just randomly picking letters here). Then sort each of those new spreadsheets by name and close them. Then, if that's all you wanted to do, open them in Notepad and recombine them. Hopefully that makes some sense. I've done a lot of this stuff, so I might be leaving out things I do automatically.
