Pedro and Piazza both a little low on that list. It's amazing to see some of those top 10's haven't amounted to much.

no it's not. Very rarely will you see a top 10 full of stars. The fact that Chipper, Delgado, Floyd, and Salmon are in it is impressive, actually.

I agree with Crack, to score that many stars and semi-stars on a list of this nature is pretty good. Not world-beating, but good.
Easy for us to look back now and say "what were they thinking?" but there wasn't a scout in America who would not have given his left testicle to sign Todd Van Poppel or Brien Taylor.

Amazingly, all four Dodgers listed went on to have very productive careers...Piazza, Pedro, Mondesi and Cedeno

Remember the time in the early 90s every year a Dodger won the ROY. Karros, Piazza, Mondesi, Nomo, Hollandsworth.. Valdes and Park might have won one, im not sure though.

You could almost flip the list upside down and start with #100 as your #1 and it would make the same amount of sense.

In hindsight of course. . .

Wow.....that is some list, talent wise. I'dbe interested to see other lists from the same era and if they have the same level of star power.

This story is well known but a few may not have heard of the future millions that Taylor wasted in a bar fight.

When the New York Yankees gave the North Carolina prep star a record $1.55 million signing bonus in 1991, it was such news that CBS' "60 Minutes" did a segment on it.
The 17-year-old Beaufort, N.C., native was dubbed the next Dwight Gooden after he posted a 29-6 record and struck out 476 batters in 239 innings in his prep career. The No. 1 pick of the amateur draft, the Yankees picked him ahead of Manny Ramírez (No. 13), Cliff Floyd (No. 14) and Shawn Green (No. 16).

Taylor received a rude awakening in Class-A ball, telling reporters after his first pro start: "In high school, nobody ever got on base. So I've got some adjusting to do."

But it didn't really matter. On Dec. 18, 1993, Taylor got into a barroom fight back home with a childhood friend and landed on his throwing shoulder.

He missed the 1994 season after undergoing surgery and was never the same.

Taylor's fastball, clocked in the high 90s before, fell to the low 80s. The Yankees' plans of having Taylor and Andy Pettitte as their one-two punch went out in a flash.

The Yankees finally gave up on Taylor in 1998. Seattle gave him a look in '99, but he couldn't even get the kids out at extended spring training.

He pitched five games for Cleveland's Class-A team in 2000, giving up eight runs in 2 2/3 innings. He pitched in just 41 minor-league games, never reaching Triple-A.

How about the Chipper Jones/Todd Van Poppel incident. The Braves wanted to select Van Poppel, however he told the Braves that he wasnt going to play profesional baseball and go to college fist. So when he got drafted by the World Championship A's in the latter of the first round, he changed his mind . I think it worked out for the braves just fine.

I had no idea exactly what happened to Brien Taylor. I had like 2 or 3 prospect baseball cards of him and wondered why he never made it. I thought he just didn't live up to the hype like Van Poppel.

Oh well, I guess it turns out for the best. The Steinbrenner and the Yankees would have started their big spending spree a lot sooner had they showed they were a winning team earlier in the 90s. Left a little room for the Braves to sneak in.

Thanks for the story dh.

I realize this is a great prospect list. I was just noting that guys like Brien Taylor, Watson and VanPopple had so much promise, but never amounted to much.

I remember Tavo Alvarez. He HIT 3 home runs for me in a 33-0 win in Baseball '94 (that game was slightly too easy...)

What's funny is that on the 1995 list, the two best young players in the game today are ranked #1 and #85...
