Historical 1871-1900 Schedules

Without findings schedules for 1871-1900 available I went ahead and did them myself. Included with this zip file are all the "as played" schedules for 1871-1900. Also included are the 1883, 1884, 1885, 1898, 1899, and 1900 "as scheduled" schedules. These files include all the leagues that played in that year. Within each CSV is the Year start day, Season start date, and a list of the teams for that year. Doubleheaders are included with these files. Games start at 2 pm Local time, except Double headers which start at 1 pm with the 2nd game at 5 pm. I hope you enjoy using these schedules in OOTP. I do need to thank Retrosheet for their hard work.

Nice work, though you might find it painful to hear that you didn't need to do it. I've already got all the original MLB schedules from 1878-1900 in OOTP-ready schedule files (there were no set schedules published for 1876-77, though it may be possible to reconstruct a decent one for 1877. The 1871-75 NA had no set schedule at all, and were entirely arranged by the contesting clubs during the season).

The only reason the pre-1901 schedule files aren't out is because there is no clear way on how to handle the league setup in that era. MLB starts off as 1 league, expands to 2 with the AA, then drops back down to one. It could be handled in OOTP by splitting the NL across two leagues in the file, then transferring all the NL teams back into the NL when the AA starts up. Or, one could keep all the NL teams in the NL and use what would effectively be a dummy league up until the AA starts, then when the AA finally folds go back to using a dummy league again until the AL starts up. Not included in this is what to do about the UA and PL; most folks would likely ignore them but they could be included via a few alignment variations. There is also the question of the 13 clubs in the 1884 AA and the 9 clubs in the 1890-91 AA. Most would likely ignore the extra club, but in fact they could be included without much trouble.

I've been meaning to post a thread about this, to gauge what method most folks would prefer to use and adjust the schedule files accordingly, but I just haven't had the chance yet.

As for Retrosheet, they do indeed do some very fine work. I often think the site just doesn't get enough credit around here; many folks sing the praises of Baseball-Reference but Retrosheet tends to get overlooked. Not sure why that is.

Anyway, as to the original schedules for the (relatively few) season available there for pre-1901, you can thank me, as the Retrosheet files are reformatted versions of the schedule files I had typed up and donated to the organization. The only reason the rest of the MLB seasons aren't there yet is because they're still in the process of being proofed and corrected to ensure the highest level of accuracy. Sadly, I've fallen far, far behind in this which is why there are still seasons waiting to be posted.

On the one hand, having to spend money to replace your system must be a downer, but on the other hand, hopefully you've now got a spanking new screamer of a system to replace it.

Absolutely. The new computer should have flames painted on the side of it! A new house, new car and new computer in the span of a month. I'm keeping the global economy going.

I'll get those scheds to you in a few days. I have to wait for a new part. Apparently, my old 80gb HD is incompatible with the new motherboard technology. And I need that old HD hooked up to the new system to work my magic. Go figure.

Get a external case (either firewire or usb - depending on what external ports you have) for the drive (unless it's a scsi).

Granted, I have been out of the technology loop since buying my system three years ago, but I still can't see how a hard drive would be incompatible with a motherboard.

The last I remember it was mainly a matter of connecting it to the IDE port and getting the BIOS to recognize it.

I'm no techie, either. But HD's now connect to the motherboard with Serial ATA connections instead of IDE cables. I had to buy an adapter on-line that connects IDE HD's to new SATA motherboards. It's only $20, so no big deal. I just felt like a monkey trying to hump a football when I opened the case to install my old HD. I scratched my head and said WTF...

I figured it was something like that. It must be a really new motherboard, as I would've thought they'd carry both kinds of connections for a little while; plus don't the CD and DVD drives still connect to IDE ports?

I'm dreading when it's time to finally replace my system, as I'm going to have to hit the computer tech web sites again and begin learning all the latest developments.

Yeah, that kills me. No transition period. My "old" HD is less than 2 years old and isn't compatible with the latest technology. You would have thought they would have had room for at least one old IDE slot. But lately the computer gods have not been smiling upon ol' Splitter24. Maybe the part will be on my door step tonight.
