Indianapolis Nicknames considered by the Selection Committee

Here are all of the names considered by the City Nickname Selection Committee...I thought you might like to know a little about the selection process.

"ROUNDERS" was chosen because of its ties to an English forerunner and ancestor of baseball...the game of "rounders"...circling the "posts" (or "bases" in baseball) is called a "rounder" and is award one point in the game...similar to a baseball "run".

Also chosen because Indianapolis is the home of the Indianapolis 500 racing event....where the Cars go "round and round and round"...hence "Rounders". This connection may be a little bit of a stretch, but I will include it here for your edification about the selection process.

Each committee member submits as many suggestions as they would like.
This usually gives us 20 to 30 suggestions.
We then rank all the suggestions in order from best to last...#1 is given 1 point...#10 is given 10 points....#20 is given 20 points.
We then pare this list down to about 15 names...nicknames with the 15 lowest scores.

We then pare this list down to about 15 names.
We rank this list in order from #1 to #15...#1 is given 1 point...#2 is given 2 points...#3 is given 3 points....#15 is given 15 points.
The nickname that gets the lowest number of points is selected as the favorite.

Well, I think Rounders, while at first glance an odd choice, does make for a clever tie-in with the Indianapolis 500 race. As you said in the other thread, the cars race 'round and 'round the oval.

I think it works.

Little history about the Arrows. The Indianapolis organization that was thinking about bidding for a expansion team was going to use the Arrows as their nickname, borrowing from the Indian heritage that the state has a large history of.

So if anyone does use it, I would love to see it with the North American Indian motif.

Of course Chicago and Cincinnati kiboshed the Arrows ever becoming a reality, and the dream died back in the 1990's I believe... Was a nice thought tho.

Yeah, coming up with choices is a lot easier...it is not easy to narrow it down to just one name.

This was the hardest city for me so far. I'm not sure why, perhaps because so many racing ones have been used.
