Player development question

I've been playing the game for about a week now, and enjoy it tremendously. My interest lies mainly in replaying historical seasons, which I am trying to do from 1901.

My major concern is with my rookies. From scouring the forums here I've concluded that nearly all players need some development time in the minors. Most rookies probably need a year or two. My problem is that the databases(both lahman's and ankit's) import players for the year that they make their actual major league debut. At this point they should have most of their minor league experience behind them. I sincerely doubt if any of these players would ever be demoted as far down as A or AA ball. It seems to me that players should be imported at age 19, then after 3-5 years in the minor leagues they'd be ready for their major league debut. (As in real life some players will take a lot longer and a handful will be ready sooner.)

I was hoping that some of the more experienced OOTP gamers could explain the rationale for historical players being handled this way.

Is there any way I can alter the database so players are imported 2 or 3 years earlier, (or however much earlier they would need)?

Due to the makeup of the database importing players for debut year is how the game has always done it, not that the other would be better but currently it just is not possible.

I hate to bump a post so old, but it brought about an additional question to this.

Seeing as how the players in a historical league will be in AA or AAA ball when they should be at least on a major league bench, will adjusting the Player Development Modifier increase the speed with which the players develop? I guess it will but I'm wondering if it will give me unrealistic results.

Also I am assuming the Player Creation modifier works only with fictional players? Or will it give their ratings a % adjustment based on what they are imported in at?

Players who were solid major leaguers in their first year will end up being on the major league team to begin with. You don't need to alter anything (theoretically). The only issue with the database, which is usually fixed by alternate versions like Ankit's, is that players who only had a few at bats in their first year end up not developing properly. If a guy goes 1-for-10 in his first year and is a career .300 hitter, it's unlikely that he'll ever actually get as good as he was.

As for player development, it works the same across the board as far as I know. Once a player is in the game, he's treated like any other player.

Talent and Actual Ratings Changes

Just starting my third year managing, but only last year did I start to watch the changes in development a bit more closely. I noticed a good deal of changes in the talent ratings, but very few changes (increase or decrease) in the actual ratings themselves.

Is there a typical gap or expected range of talent deviation before this becomes reflected in the ratings proper? Or is there anything typical about development?

bump

Sorry, just didn't want this to get lost. I'm really curious about this process. If it's not working the way it should I'd like to know if I've inadvertantly set up something that needs changed. I mean, I don't see it as a problem unless it's way out of what normally transpires. Thanks again.

endgame,

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I will give it a try here anyway. Well, I did a study on player development last year. In the study, I tracked and mapped the rating/talent changes for a 30-year test league. This was done in hope to obtain the information on distribution of player development (rating/talent progression) for different age. The study was done under default setting using v6.03, so it's possible the result might not be entirely applicable for other versions. Anyway, if you are interested, here is the link:

Player rating level progression study for v6.03 (i.e. player development)

That's an impressive project Jayzone! I don't know how that one slipped by me. I will soon be examining your info in more detail. Thanks for the pointer.
