College Basketball

If you like Men's College Basketball, turn on ESPN right now. You will see the best team in the nation putting on a show.

*Edit - Actually it is halftime right now, so wait about 10 minutes and turn there.

See how the playoff ruined the basketball regular season.

People always talk up the March Madness. What they don't realize is how that actually killl the regular season. So what if these two teams are great? Winning means nothing at this stage. And if they are really that great, people can wait till they meet in the playoffs.

I guess that is true, but if you are really a college basketball fan, then you were watching this game tonight (assuming they you didn't have something important to do). There are a lot of people who become college basketball fans in March.

I see everybody using this idea that it kills the regular season, the NFL has playoffs and their regular season hasnt been hurt at all. Whats so great about a college regular season where a team may play 3 times a year in which they could actually lose. Thats not exciting

While a typical regular season game may not be very exciting to a casual fan, I would still think a matchup of the #1 and #3 team in the nation would bring some excitement. There were certainly a lot of excited people dressed in orange in Champaign, IL last night.

The crazy thing is, I'm not sure that the problem was Wake showing up or not. I think Illinois may just be that good.

Florida may be the most underated team in the nation, but I would take Illinois over anyone right now.

I think they play Miami next, time to see if they can play defense against a team that can score.

Yea, the win over Providence looked a lot better before they lost to Winthrop.

The Illini played a helluva game last night. I can't see any reason why they would not be #1 on Monday.

Back to the idea that the regular season doesn't matter...

This comment is sort of illogical, mainly because you aren't suggesting anything to solve what you consider the problem. Are you saying the 64-team tournament format should be altered, or what? I don't understand.

The way things are now, it's pretty simple. The regular season is just as important as in any other sport, really. It gives small schools the opportunity to build their resumes with upsets and makes it possible for small conferences to compete on a similar scale to the larger ones.

The regular season may not matter to Duke and Kansas, but try saying the regular season doesn't matter to Tennessee-Chattanooga or Western Kentucky. That's why the regular season is so vital. It allows these small universities to battle for conference titles, and scratch and claw for conference tournament seeding.

To say that an entire season doesn't matter, I just don't get it.

Wake Forrest versus Illinois doesn't matter? North Carolina and Kentucky this weekend doesn't matter?

Just doesn't add up one bit.

I can, they are called voters, and I would bet that over half of them did not watch this game. Combine that with the fact that the Illini would have to leap Kansas (in the Coaches, many more in the AP where they are currently #5) and I have my doubts about a #1 ranking.
