Minor League Player of the Year

Anyone ever award a minor league player of the year award?
I was thinking of doing it for my solo league but i really dont want to look through every single minor leaguer. Top prospects doesnt seem to be rated in any order.

You can sort minor league stats in the League Leaders area, I believe.

That can be hard to do when players move around from A-AA-AAA throughout the season

Interesting idea. Going on what Jonzard & andymac said, maybe you could have an award for each level of the minors. That way you could just sort through each level, as long as players still show up for levels (if applicable) when they are no longer at that level, which I cannot recall offhand now. Plus maybe one for each level dilutes the award.

Anyway, again I say still an interesting idea.

Well since they go from one level to another i was thinking minor league player of the year would cover the whole minor league system.
I was thinking of awarding a hitter and pitcher from each league.
Dont know abgout anyone else but i like seeing who wins an award each year. Its part of the fun before preapring for next season.
These are awards i keep track of. Some of them are determined by the season leader.

1. Ted Williams Award ( Best Hitter)
2. Cy Young Award (Best Pitcher)
3. Jackie Robinson Award (Rookie of the Year)
4. Ozzie Smith Award ( Best Fielders)
5. Babe Ruth Award (MVP)
6. Casey Stengel Award ( Best Manager) I chose Casey over John McGraw
because he had the yankees in the series 10 out of 12 years.
7. Joe Dimaggio Award (World Series MVP)
8. Rollie Fingers Award ( best Relief pitcher. Not just saves leader)
9. Connie Mack Award ( Best Orginazation) I take each major league team and add all the wins of its minor league teams to its win total and the major league team with the highest total wins the award
10. Ty Cobb Award ( batting avg leader0
11. Hank Aaron Award (hr leader)
12. Hack Wilson Award (rbi leader)
13. Lou Brock Award (SB leader)
14. Walter Johnson Award ( Wins leader)
15. Sandy Koufax Award (era leader)
16. Nolan Ryan Award (Strikeout leader)
17. Lee Smith Award ( Saves Leader)
I was thinking of a come back player of the year or most improved but i am not sure how to go about that one.

Yeah i thought about that and it may be the best solution. Maybe to take the top five from certain stat categories and award 1-5 points for each category and the player with the most wins. I had hoped that prospects would rate the highest player because it would be less work but then again i enjoy the work of figuring out who wins each award.

My inclination is twofold. One, to implement your idea. I like it. Two, that the easiest and straightforward method for me would be to simply look at minor league standing at year end and select based on the following criteria:

Player is selected from the first place team finishing the most games ahead regardless of system, AAA,AA, A.

From that point I'd select either the pitcher or batter who's performance was most a factor in delivering that first place finish, ala MVP criteria perhaps. In short, a .383 13 HR .484 OBP doesn't mean squat if the player only appeared in AA, for instance, for 25% of his minor league year.

I was just going to use obp & slg but most of the players were at the place in the top ten order. I would probably have too many ties.So i deceided that i would have to have more categories.
So for hitters i chose avg, hits, r, 2b, 3b, hr, rbi, sb and for pitchers ip, w, sv, cg, k's.
I wish i could use win shares or something like it.
As far as whether the player played most of his games in AAA or AA, i figured he would have to have played most games at that level if he is a league leader at that minor league level.
So i will probably have a hitter and pitcher of the year for each minor league level.
I would like to name the awards after the best players in minor league history at that level. But i am looking more at career minor leaguers to name the awards after instead of players who went to the majors.

Just wondering...

Do you hand a Mendoza Line Award for worst regular season batting avg?

Or a Jason Giambi award for worst performance with a bloated contract award?

Perhaps the Stand Pat Award for worst GM?

Just tossing out ideas...

Do you track and record these manually?

yes and its a little time consuming but i dont like just rushing through seasons.
I have just been using excel cause i guess i am use to reading the lahman database. Should i use Access? I wish i knew how to program and i could make it program that would do it automatically.

Excel's the program I'm most familiar with, and I'm no expert there by any means. I just asked a question about Access in another forum. Sounds like, if a guy has some patience the end result will deliver.

I'm with you though, I don't like rushing through the season/end of season. I end up sort of pushing my way through, but I would seriously like to take the time to develop some routine / checklist that I can methodically go through and make sure I'm not leaving some aspect of the game (that would further deepen my own experience with it) untapped - for pre-season, during, post, and off-season. Just have to figure out what I really want out of it all I guess.

That's the beauty of this forum though, finding out how other people do things and borrowing what works, asking more about what fits your personal interests, and throwing off the rest.

thanks for the feedback BMan.

Oh yeah i agree. Makes you appreciate how some members like TigerFan have the time to type up those excellent dynasty reports. To me thats the fun of watching your league's history.
I too take what i have learned from others here and implement to the way i prefer.

yeah most improved or comeback player of the year might be
a little too difficult to track when i get to 16-30 teams.
So thats probably one award i wont track.
