Super Bowl and Roman Numerals

Did you know that next year's Super Bowl, being the 40th in history, will be known as Super Bowl XL?

In ten years, should they continue the madness that is Roman numerals, the 50th Super Bowl will be known as Super Bowl L.

And, heaven forbid, should we arrive at the 59th Super Bowl, it would be known as Super Bowl LIX.

Does anyone else think it's lost it's panache? If, that is, it ever had any to begin with?

I should think this would add a little marketing value to the event. Super Bowl XL could be hyped as the Jumbo-mega Super Bowl. Chuckle if you get the joke.

I was thinking about this the other day. Superbowl L definitely sounds kind of week. I bet you they go with Superbowl 50 when it comes up.

I think they should switch to the year it's played in.

Super Bowl 2006. That makes sense.

Ex-Lax should already be filming their commercial.

As the most conservative league of the North American sports, it is the duty of the NFL to continue using Roman numerals.

What the hell? It's much less conservative than MLB, and more than the NHL.

You know what the NFL stands for?

The No Fun League.

It's only a matter of time before celebrations in the endzone will be penalized with the play being called back entirely. Which I would support. You celebrate, no touchdown.

Actually, it stands for the National Football League. Please do not lie on the message board. It is very hurtful.

Wasn't NFL the first post-Ice Cube NWA record? Or was that N4L?

Why does the Super Bowl even have to have a number? No other major sporting championship does does it?

Great point! When you think of World Series, you think of the year - ie Detroit won the 84 World Series. Same for college football - Nebraska won the 71 national championship.

That's probably one of the reasons they do it like they do. To be different.

Maybe they are riding on the coattails of the Olympics. They also use the roman numerals to designate the ??? Olympiad.

Maybe they feared a lockout, strike, or world war would cause the cancellation of a superbowl and rather than having a missing year entry, they could continue on with the numerals as if nothing ever happened.

They consider the Superbowl to be the supreme sporting event that the world has ever known, so maybe it's an eliteist thing. Kinda like how the wealthy and powerful (including popes and kings) like to tack roman numerals on to the end of their children/successors to further add to the elitism factor. I'm kinda surprised we don't number our presidents that way.

Also, why do they use roman numerals to designate the year a movie was made in the final credits?

Pro football is the only major sport that plays its regular season in one year (or nearly all in one year), and its playoffs and Super Bowl in another. I'm guessing that's why it's not called the 2005 Super Bowl - was that for the 2005 season or the 2004 season? As for Roman numerals instead of the standard numbering, the creators probably wanted it to sound more regal since they were trying to drum up its popularity, and numbering it in that way likely spurred more conversation about it. Super Bowl I just looks better than Super Bowl 1, anyway.

Regarding the movies, it seems to be a tradition of which the origins are not known.
