Troubles With Double Plays
Is anyone seeing a trouble with Double Plays? It almost seams like it's random if it's a double play or not. I have been watching this (just a little, I haven't done a survey on it) but it just does not feel right. Last night I had this play and I thought it should have been a double play if you read the play-by-play. It said, "It's a hard grounder to first. No problem for (1B name here). Let's see if they can turn two here." (The runner WAS being held on by the way.) He fields it cleanly. The throw to second for out number one. Over to first... SAFE!! Just beat it out." The Speed rating was 3 and the infielder's arm rating was a 4. A hard grounder which is fielded cleanly and NO double play. How can this be? Everything was perfect for a DP here. If it was a slow roller, I understand, but a hard grounder fielded cleanly. I think the double plays are a random thing in the computer and it is NOT based on ratings. The ratings were on the side of a double play here and it didn't happen. And I am starting to notice this happening more and more. Any answers to this? I am stumped unless it's a random outcome for the computer.

I remember a review of a video baseball game (not OOTP) which said--and I'm paraphrasing--the game had overall statistical accuracy, but at time unreal in-game occurances. A great description of OOTP, I think.
The limitations on pbp text forces the game to choose description that, if it was real life, seem unreal to the player reading--but perserves the overall accuracy of the game. Frustrating yes, but acceptable given that one can't program an infinate amount of pbp. As an aside, I remember playing Miller Associates/APBA game, and always being excited that they added 100 to 200 lines of pbp each upgrade, only to find out over the course of a 162 game season and post-season, how few that was.

I forgot to take into account, it's just a game, as my wife would say. At the end of the season stats, the amount of double plays for the entire league should be real close to what you have as your default settings. I still think a hard grounder fielded cleanly should be a double play with a man on.

Last season, my starting SS was a 14 in range with a .938%. We never turned DPs. This year my SS is a 65/.965% and the amount of DPs has shot up.
What are the fielding %'s and ranges of your players? |
