Does anyone think that he was forced out of the team?

Why he was brought back this year.... I don't know. They need to rebuild immediately... and rebuild with a disciplinarian coach... a Tom Coughlin.

Spurrier would be a bad choice. Coaching an NFL team really hurts his golf game.

Wayne Fontes or Rich Kotite would be great choices.

If they hire Steve Spurrier, I will regret ever playing that game. |

Being one of the 7 people who actually sat and watched the Dolphins/Cardinals game, I can safely say that something needed to be done. Everyone seems to preach how good of a person Wanny is, how much the players respect him, etc. None of that was evident in that game. This was a team that was frustrated, that played 100 times better than Arizona did but still made repeated critical errors. Granted, there were some very questionable calls that went against them, but instead of playing through them, they gave up.
Something needed to be done. Whether "forced out" or quitting on his own, there was no positive Wanny could have made out of this season. The blame of Ricky Williams leaving has been far eclipsed by how badly the team has played this season. If Ricky Williams stays, this team wins maybe two more games, if that. As much as I hate the train wreck of this season, it was necessary to see the glaring problems with the team. With all the talent in the world, this team could never get past 10-6, but at 10-6, no one seems to realize that there's a problem. Wanny himself stated that people seemed to forget the team that won ten games a season (regarding the people who wanted him fired, I guess). But the point is that Wanny's never been a coach that has greatly improved a team that he's been brought in to coach (the Bears were one season removed from a 11-5 season, never won more than 9 games, and had losing seasons four out of six seasons under Wanny) and is busy resting on the laurels of the teams that have been given to him. A nice guy doesn't necessarily make a good coach. And, if we're cleaning house, clean the whole damn house. Coach, GM, everything. It's what should have been done this offseason, and with how horribly this offseason was handled, I'm not surprised.

...And there was much rejoicing!
I was afraid Dave and Wayne were too close for him to ever be fired, so I'm glad this, um, resignation is happening. I've said it before and I'll say it again; there are two problems with the Dolphins this year: (1) They lost too many offensive linemen in the off-season, and (2) they are poorly coached. This move could correct half of that.

Wannstedt lost me in the final game of the 2002 season, when we had a lead on the Pats in the 4th quarter with arguably the best running back in the league in our backfield... and he had Fiedler passing. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!? Whether or not the blame should have been placed on Turner for calling the plays, I don't know... but either way... the head coach should have stepped up and questioned why they weren't trying to whittle the clock down. I've said this 100 times, but this whole organization needs to be cleaned out... I definitely agree with you. I don't have to look further than the Patriots to see the stark differences between a well-run organization from the top-down and the Miami Dolphins. |

This is also a team that hasn't really had a GM in a while. Shula ran the GM side when he was coach, Johnson was GM when he was coach, and when Wanny took over for him, he went GM as well. Maybe that has something to do with it - seperation of power isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I mean, the Dolphins didn't draft a quarterback above the 4th round while Marino was a Dolphin. I understand that Marino is the franchise and all, but when the guy starts to get to his mid-30s, maybe you draft a player you can develop. The Dolphins never bothered, perhaps because the drafting of players by a coach sends a negative message towards the current players that they need to be replaced. At least a coach can play dumb and say that the GM picks the players, it's just his job to work with what's dealt to him. One of the amusing things about the Dolphins situation is that they played well, but no one could really explain why, outside of their defense. Whenever they talk about Fiedler, they point to his winning percentage. "His numbers may not be great, but he's a winner!" Shut up. He's not a friggin' good luck charm. You want a good luck charm? Larry Izzo. Those are the type of players you need on a team. New England understood that. Note the directions of the respective teams when Izzo left Miami for New England.

Will Wannstead ever get a job again in the NFL? I think so. In his 41/2 seasons in Miami, he averages about 10 wins per(43 total if i remember right). I think Wannstead will get a job for next season. Maybe in Buffalo, San Fransico or Kansas City. All of those head coaches are on the hot seat according to some emails i've read.

Spurrier would be a bad choice.
He was a great college coach but like great college players he couldnt adapt to the NFL. He tried to coach like he did in college and that doesnt work at the pro level. Would Charley Weis ( i think thats his name) be a bad choice? |

I would be pumped if we got Weis. I would be absolutely ECSTATIC if Scott Pioli came with him and became our GM... like some of the rumors say. |

I wanted the 'Skins to hire Weis after Schottenhemier. At the time, I suppose I would admit Spurrier was a better choice.
