Notre Dame Player Out To Injure?

I read this line from Notre Dame's Brandon Hoyte when asked about a tackle he made on Tennesee's quarterback on Saturday that separated his shoulder and knocked him out of the game:

That doesn't sound respectful to me...it sounds pretty darn childish and makes it appear he wanted to cause an injury with his tackle. Now, we can give him the benefit of the doubt he didn't and he's just waving his bravado after a big ND win but it still leaves some doubt there about his intent.

Even if you think that and try to injure guys you shouldn't say something like that in the press.

So why is that when Dick Butkus did it, it was "hard-nosed football," but when modern players do it, it is "poor sportsmanship" ??

I live in TN, and I'm a UT fan all the way, but I saw the hit that Hoyte put on Ainge. There was nothing really illegal about it at all, just a solid hard knock. I agree I wouldn't spout that to the press in today's game, but the hit itself was nothing to start throwing out suspensions for. If it was an illegal hit and Ainge was SERIOUSLY injured, and Hoyte went to the press and said he didn't really care what happened, then we have some media fodder.

It was poor sportsmanship back then as well.

I think you can intepret the words in lots of different ways. Still it is true with every hit the defense player is trying to put a little bit of fear into the offence player's mind.

That's probably what he meant by "hoping them not to get up in a respectable way".

Exactly. All the big hits you see from the defense in football could be turned into form tackles which accomplish the same basic thing, stopping the ball carrier. But a form tackle doesn't put the fear of god into an offensive player whereas a big hit will make that player think twice about running/catching the ball.
Happy feet for QB's, alligator arms for WR's, these are all results of big hits, not form tackles. An intimidated offense is much easier to contain than one that's flying high with confidence or isn't intimidated.

Yeah, and don't we all expect players to hit HARD legally? Playing it any other way is disrespectful to the game. So what he said is not only correct, but should also be the motto of every player. What would football be like if every player started considering how hard a hit would be too hard?

Ever see DE's chasing down QB's who can throw at any second? Football would be like that, but with every pursuit and every tackle. Football would suck.

I can't believe this is even a topic. He made a tackle, and I'd want him to hit the next guy even harder. When you hit players, you hit them as hard as you can, the result isn't always within your hands.

peace

GO Notre Dame
Take the rest of the players out.

Of course players are not trying to injure anyone but you hit them as hard as you can to knock that ball out.
