Post Having A Blast With OOTP

Is there some way we can retire that "OOTP is a Joke" thread or continue the discussion under another thread? Every time somebody posts to defend the game, it just bumps up the thread and perpetuates that slanderous subject line. I'm getting tired of looking at it.

BTW, my thoughts on the topic, FWIW:

I've put in a lot more time simming baseball games than any person should, going back to the 1950s. For a long, long time, I thought the gold standard of a baseball game was reproducing statistics exactly. Ted Williams hit .388 in 1957, I wanted him to hit .388 in 1957 in my game.

In a sense, that's realism. But it's not the real experience a baseball manager or GM goes through. For those of us who like to play historical seasons, particularly, a dead-on "accurate" sim would be nothing like real life. It's Nostradamus-ball. Trade for a 20-year-old Henry Aaron? Sure. We know what HE'S going to do. Take a flyer on Bob Speake? Forget it.

I'm having SO much fun replaying the seasons of my youth now because I know what players CAN do, but I don't know what they WILL do. As a GM and manager, you have to use judgment, take risks, weigh options in a way you would never have to if you could be SURE of the players in your universe. And to me, THAT's more like real life.

And, that having been said, the players still perform in character. A player might have a great year or an offyear when you can't anticipate it, an injury might end his career, anything could happen, but Mickey Mantle is not going to start playing like Pee Wee Herman.

So, I'm having a blast. And I'm not buying roster disks and stadium disks and prospect disks (whatever that is).

Could this be better?

Well said...plus add in on-line leagues and the challenges of interacting with other people trying to do the same thing as you...win.

Amen to that. I play baseball sims to feel like a GM/field manager of a ball club. To do that, you can't know how productive a guy is going to be from the outset.
