A's Sign Loaiza

It's being reported Oakland has inked Loaiza to a three year, twenty one million dollar deal. A bit much for Loaiza, especially considering it's Oakland. Thoughts?

In today's market that's almost cheap for a pitcher, but day-am has Loaiza ever been erratic over his career.

EDIT: Actually, maybe not, he has switched around parks a lot.

WTF???? I thought this had to be a joke but it's on the official site. If this doesn't scream "We're trading Barry Zito" I don't know what does.

His ERA outside his home stadium was up there too. And obviously it's true, I don't make up rumors . Zito to Rangers for Blalock!

More proof the market has changed, and most deals last year and this year are wrongfully labeled as overpriced?

Well this was the last thing we needed, more pitching. I don't see why they would trade Barry. You would think they would have been able to sign Zito for maybe a little bit more that Loiza and Zito is a much better pitcher. It will be interesting to see what Billy has up his sleeve now.

I don't think it's possible to have too much pitching. Look what the White Sox did this year. I actually kinda suspect that this 3 year deal is really a 1-year-and-trade deal. It wouldn't surprise me if Billy is counting on a solid year from Stevie so he can unload him next offseason.

I'm not sure if I like this signing. It seems very strange, but I just feel like there's something more here. This isn't an isolated move.

I think it's interesting how quickly us statheadz dismiss other GM's signings as just stupid, but when Beane makes a move like this we fall over ourselves trying to figure out how it is a good move. Not saying it's wrong, there's reason enough to doubt Beane would do something stupid, it's just interesting.

I think it's because Beane has made moves like this before and everyone scratches their heads for 2 weeks and then he does something else that makes us all go "Ahh, so that's what he was thinking." This move could be horrible, because it doesn't look like a typical Beane signing. That's why I suspect he knows something we don't. Plus, he's earned a few oddball moves in my opinion.

I admit for a second I debated about how it's a good move since Beane did it, but that's because he deserves that respect for his track record. But still I came to the right conclusion... paying 7M per season to a league average pitcher is just dumb.

I think the most likely thing is Beane severely backloaded the deal so he can get one year out of him at about 4M and then trade him to some dumbass around the league...

Except that Loaiza has been better(2005), and a fookload better(2003), than league average in two of the last three years.

Yeah, but what happened to him between 2003 and 2004? Strikeouts dropped from a league-best 207 (8.2/9) down to 117 (5.75/9). He bounced back a bit this year but he's on the wrong side of thirty to be showing improvement. I'd bet you'll get more '04 Loazia than '03 Loaiza next season.

That's the interesting thing about Loaiza. K rates for 2003 and 2005 are #1 and #2 for his career. Only has 1,880 innings on that arm.

If the A's get three years of 2005 Loaiza they'll be satisfied.
