Need some advice - to host or not to host

Cross-posted this in the Online forum as well. (hope that's okay) Looking for a little nudge in the right direction:

I'm just now entertaining the idea of looking for space on a host for my league. Right now it's a solo fictional league and it probably will remain that. My level of knowledge in this whole arena is relatively nil. So....

1) It seems the only real function of having my league on a host would be to more easily link data, including the bells and whistles of game-created pages, colors etc... in the event of my own reference in a post (or in a dynasty thread should I ever decide to create one). Beyond that, is there any real motivation for me to consider this notion at all?

2) If it is something that you consider of benefit to me, (here's where I say please take it slowly

) What's the process of actually getting started? What do I look for in a host - I'd think it would be real minimum - and once one is decided on, are there tutorials or assistance here, .... etc .. that will help get the site off and running so as not to be a total embarassment to myself?

Just looking for a bit of a primer, I suppose, on necessity, benefit, and protocol where all of you have some veteran expertise. If you're inclined to start lending a hand, I appreciate greatly - in advance - those efforts.

Point me in the right direction. I'm an old dog, but with patience I'm willing to learn some new tricks.

I recomend either www.vizaweb.com or www.powweb.com for a host. Lots of people here use these two, and I haven't heard any complaints. I use vizaweb, so if you go with them, their cheapest plan should be plenty for you. In order to setup the league, you need to get an ftp client (I suggest SmartFTP) enter in the provided url, username and password and just copy your html and image files files from you HD to the host by dragging them (the ftp client features a very intuitive windows explorer like interface). That's really all there is to it.

I use vizaweb for my wife's site, and have had no problems so far. And it's very affordable - they even throw domain name registration in if you sign up for a full year.

how much webspace do you need? If it's only for your dynasty's sake, I have room on my account that I am more than willing to share.

Thanks for your prompt and informative responses. And Cuss, thanks so much for the gesture of generosity - appreciate greatly being able to consider that as an option. I'll examine the choices in a bit more detail now that I know the process doesn't seem as overwhelming as I'd imagined.
