Report says Johnson wants out of Arizona, eyeing Yankees

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1837220

In other news, George Steinbrenner creamed his khakis, then called in an order for a uniform to fit a 6'10" pitcher.

That's odd; all of the unsubstantiated rumors I've heard today had Johnson going to the Red Sox. I honestly don't think the Yankees could get Johnson -- they have no young prospects left to give away. Who would Arizona want from the Yanks? Brad Holsey? Bret Prinze? Bubba Crosby? Not exactly A-list material.

Cash and the taking away of Johnson's huge contract.

The Red Sox, Mets, Phillies, Cubs, Cardinals, Astros, and Angels can all offer the same things -- plus decent prospects.

I'd bet on basically any three of Halsey, Cano, Navarro, El Duque, and Prinz, plus cash. The D'Backs might even try to throw in Alomar, see if the Yanks'll take him off their hands, too.

Plus, Johnson would have to waive his no-trade clause for a deal to happen. So if he just wants the Yankees, that's the only way Arizona can drop his contract. Otherwise, they have to keep him.

If he would go to the Red Sox think of how scary Pedro/Schilling/Johnson is Game 1,2,3 of a playoff series would be.

I think the problem here is about why would the Arizona need to drop his contract? Team winning or not, Johnson got fans into seats. There is nothing wrong in keeping him.

I don't see Arizona giving Johnson up just for his contract.

Plus Johnson and the Dbacks want him to go into the Hall as a Dback and him retiring in the teal and purple makes it more likely to happen.

I read in the Tribune this morning that the Dodgers and Cubs are in the running, as well. Since the Cubs are 7 games out of first, but with the Wild Card still a possibility, it would be nice to see them land The Big Unit. But I don't see it happening.

A six-man rotation? Not likely. Send Maddux to the bullpen? Make him the next great closer? Anyone else got any decent jokes?

Or turn Johnson into a closer...LOL!

1971 - On July 9th, the Oakland Athletics' Vida Blue tossed the longest shutout in American League history during a twenty inning, 1-0 triumph over the Anaheim Angels. The A's ace fanned seventeen batters in eleven innings while the Angels' Billy Cowan tied a Major League record by striking out six times. Both teams also combined to set a Major League record with forty-three K's.

The American League netted their only All-Star victory between 1962 and 1983 with a 6-4 victory over the Nationals. The outing appeared more like a home run derby though as Johnny Bench, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Reggie Jackson, Frank Robinson, and Harmon Killebrew all hit round-trippers.

The Detroit Tigers proved the old adage that "less is more" after they tied a Major League record by using six different pinch hitters during the seventh inning while still losing 6-5 to the New York Yankees on September 5th.

On August 24th, Ernie Banks hit his 512th and final home run off of the Cincinnati Reds' Jim McGlothin during a 5-4 win at Wrigley Field. The monumental blast moved Banks ahead of Mel Ott for an eighth place tie with Eddie Mathews on the all-time list.

The Pittsburgh Pirates started what is believed to be the first all-minority line-up on September 1st as Rennie Stennett, Gene Clines, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Manny Sanguillen, Dave Cash, Al Oliver, Jackie Hernandez, Dock Ellis and Bob Veale all take the field for the "Buccos".

At the World Series, Roberto Clemente and Steve Blass combined on both sides of the plate for a 2-1, Game 7 victory that granted the Pirates their first World Championship title since 1960. After the game, some 40,000 ecstatic fans rioted in downtown Pittsburgh resulting in over one-hundred injuries and thousands of dollars in property damage.

Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn determined that players from the Negro Leagues would be given a full membership into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and not honored in a separate wing as originally announced.

Nah, since this is a trade, just give the Diamondbacks Maddux.

If Johnson would waive his no-trade clause anywhere it would be the Yankees. End of story.

If your the GM of the Diamondbacks, I'm sure your going to ask for one member of the Starting rotation in return for him. Someone who's contract isn't huge, someone who's contract ends this year, and someone who you might be able to move later. If I'm the Diamondbacks, I'm asking for Felix Pie, Angel Guzman and Matt Clement. It might be a lot to some, to me, that might just be a starting point. And if I'm Jim Hendry, I'm helping theh 3 of them pack.
