Sound Bug with 6.2a?

I'm having problems trying to get the game sound to work ever since installing 6.2a patch. I try to turn it on by clicking the sound button in the top right when starting a game. A window pops up that says:

"Sound set on!
Please wait for initialization."
[OK]

I've left this window open for several minutes and it does nothing.. I click OK.. still nothing. After 2-3 minutes I get an error in "ootp6.exe" has caused an error and must close.. send error report?

I have had the same problem with 2 computers. Actually, now that I think about it, the first computer only had version 6 demo installed, this computer has 6.2a installed.

Both PC's are using XP pro.

I found out that I could fix this by going to options and turning game sounds on.. so it's not too big of a deal, but the sound button doesn't work.
