Grrrr, I wish the game had this option

Okay, so yesterday I'm playing out a game, my Philadelphia Zephyrs versus the San Francisco Titans. On the mound for the Titans is Steven "Whizz" Wisner, a hard-throwing righthander who gets wild sometimes. First, he plunks my first-baseman Dorian Sawicki, knocking him out of the game with a broken nose. Then a couple of innings later, he fires in a fastball that conks Joseph Jackson in the head, giving him a concussion that will sideline him for two weeks.

Now, at this point, in my fictional leage back in 1914, it seems as a matter of roleplaying, it wouldn't be surprising at all if my pitcher, or my pitcher at the behest of his manager, would decide to throw some knockdown pitches at the other team's batters, or that Mr Destruction known as Steve Wisner.

I know there are some people already going, "Oh God! That would be horrible to have in the game," but I still think in terms of a fictional universe and the fact that in real baseball pitchers have intentionally brushed back or thrown at players on the opposing team, it would be an option that could be included in the game.

Of course, it's not just a simple matter of sticking it in the game. It needs to be put in with possible consequences like player suspensions and such, probably even as an option that players could turn off in the league setup if they don't want that dirty element in the game.

I am not sure, I dont manage much in game but does the game have occasional fights, or clearing the dugout?

Anybody who would say it's horrible to have in OOTP doesn't know and doesn't play real life baseball at any serious level.

It's a part of the game and it always has been, though head-hunting is frowned upon. The majority of hitters understand: If your pitcher hits a batter (specifically a star batter) on the other team, you might get plunked. Shut up, take your base, move on.

That happens sometimes after a hit batsman, but as it is now, completely at the whim of the random number generator. So what's being asked for is a measure of influence, and have a way to retaliate for the likes of a headhunter like Wisner.

It's actually not completely random. It's very likely to happen if a player hits a homerun and the pitcher hits the next batter up. Retaliation for being shown up?

There is no reason for not having the manager order a beanball. It is an unspoken rule most of the time, but for those of us who play out games it would help out a lot.

I dont think having a beanball option is any worse than letting the manager argue a call and make such a scene that he gets kicked out of game.

Contrary to what one may think from reading some posters...there aren't too many impressionable eight year olds playing this game. Any 13 year old playin OOTP has dozens of shoot em up's, fighting games, or hockey games on his computer...

Give em the high heat....NEXT PATCH...please!

Good idea. It would certainly add an element of realism.

Maybe that would be a nice option to have, but I personally would never use it. I could never see myself giving a guy a free base just because his pitcher hit one of my guys. After all, that hit batter may represent the other team's winning run.

Somewhere down the line, I could see OOTP giving you the option of ordering your pitcher to pitch inside or on the outside corner...a pitcher with less control would have a higher probability of hitting a batter.

But I'm not sure I want TOO much control over calling pitches. It would bog the games down, IMHO.

I think it'd be a great addition as well. It happens in the game, so why not give us the option. Hell, it'd be a good stress reliever too.

Also, MVP Baseball 2004 features an intentional beanball, and I think more 13 year olds play that game than this one.

It would be an especially nice addition to those who like to play historical leagues. Baseball prior to the PC revolution was full of 'statement' pitches and pitchers. I grew up with Don Drysdale and Bob Gibson; two pitchers that would bean you as soon as look at ya. It was an integral part of a pitchers repertoire in the first 70 years of the century. Shoot in the deadball days a pitcher would throw at a batter if he dug in on him....

It would be a nice little addition to the game, but unless it somehow was programmed to have the desired affect for the rest of the game/series/season, it wouldn't be anything more than eye candy and a free base for the batter. I believe that a retaliation pitch does have a real influence on the game, but how in the world would you code that?

I'd love to have options like that. Also the option to start a bench clearing brawl.

This is a nice idea as one more option on your pitch selection.
Speaking of the brushback, it is not clear to me whether the game creates pitchers who are just really assertive with the inside half of the plate, as Bob Gibson was. Those pitchers would presumably have a higher HBP ratio and perhaps more strikeouts as well.
What do you think?

call it the intentional walk, back in the era where pitchers didn't want to waste four pitches on a batter so they plunked him on the first one.

As much as I like the idea overall, I think the above point is excellent and should be stressed. There needs to be consequences to throwing at a guy, even if it's being warned/tossed/whatever.
